MRI and CT imaging for horses is now available in Manitoba!!

We recently completed the install of our Hallmarq Veterinary Imaging Vison CT and standing MRI.

These two amazing technologies will allow us to provide advanced imaging and hence advanced/better treatments for horses with lameness - both bony/arthritis related as well as all manner of soft tissue injury of the lower limbs.

So far we have started scanning horses with soft tissue injuries of the foot as well as fractures in the foot that would otherwise have been difficult to have diagnosed in the past.

Our service is open to all horses either via direct client/patient of Elders Equine or via one of the referring veterinary practices around the province as well as horses from NW Ont, SK, AB and the northern US states. Have your veterinarian connect with us for an advanced imaging referral appointment for your horse.

The schedule is now open for both CT and MRI for your horse. Book through our office at 204-864-2888 or [email protected] for information on making an appointment

We will provide more opportunities to see what this technology can do in the days and weeks ahead but for now, a couple images and videos

Lameness diagnostics with AI

Continuing our tradition of advancing the level of medicine for our clients, patients and the Province and following our core values of Innovation and Education, we have partnered with Sleip, an artificial intelligence based lameness detection company that allows our vets to have the added benefit of an objective analysis of a horse's gait in our lameness exams.

This is some super cool stuff. We are using the system currently as part of a project looking at stifle lameness and response to IRAP and hyaluronic acid joint therapies Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Canada. We get the benefit of also using it for other cases as well and it has been very neat to be able to put quantitative analysis to our subjective lameness eye assessments during exams.

Dr. Bell has been able to use this tech at both Elders Equine and Sherwood Animal Clinic to diagnose lameness cases and confirm responses to nerve block etc

Cheers to our amazing DVM summer students!

Hayley Jenkins and Rachel Haner are heading back to vet school for their final year WCVM Today and we couldn’t be prouder of them both!

Rachel and Hayley did a great job with us this summer and even though we didn’t get to have Hayley with us as long as we’d like, both were able to develop their equine vet med skills and gain confidence with procedures and cases!

Rachel became a sharp shooter with her joint injections and she seems to have an affinity for ducks like the rest of us here at Elders Equine.

Both participated in the Manitoba Government and MVMA - Manitoba Veterinary Professionals VetSTEP program which allows DVM students opportunities to work in large animal practices during their summer opportunities.

Amazing work both of you and we look forward to hearing the great things ahead in your futures!

Our DVM summer student positions are open for application now for the 2025 summer positions so if you are a DVM student between 1-4th year and looking for an equine summer job, send you CV and letter of intent to us soon.

Have a great final year ladies! We’ll miss you

From all of us at Elders Equine!

Surgeon rewards

Always neat to get to see the outcomes of some previous surgical cases.

This horse had a surgical joint fusion of the pastern joint (called a pastern arthrodesis procedure) due to arthritis of the pastern joint (high ring bone).

The joint has fused perfectly and the P1 and P2 bones are now fused as one with a sound horse that is back in regular work and doing great.

Dr. Bell provides surgical care and procedures through our hospital in Winnipeg and can perform many procedures from complex orthopedic repairs like this to colic surgery, airway surgery, neurological/spine surgery, soft tissue and emergent surgery to name a few. Surrounded by a team of vets and registered veterinary technicians (RVTs) as well as an amazing support team, Elders Equine is able to provide great outcomes for our great patients!

Have a question about your horse? Have a horse that needs a sports medicine/lameness/soundness exam or needs to be considered for any type of surgery, consult with the equine trained vets at Elders Equine to get the right care.

The wait is nearly over!

Our standing MRI and CT scanner for horses are nearly ready for install at Elders Equine hospital.

There will be much more detail to come when we will be able to accommodate our first scans - stay tuned

This combination of Hallmarq Veterinary Imaging standing MRI and standing limb CT are a first for Canada and one of only a few sites in the world with this pair of technological marvels available at the same practice outside of a university.

What does MRI do?

MRI is magnetic resonance imaging - basically it is a device that reads the radio frequency of the body's tissue molecules when they are subjected to an intense magnetic field. The device then reads those frequencies and creates a high definition image of the hard and soft tissues. MRI is best for looking at tendons, ligaments and cartilage. We use it for feet - think navicular disease etc or to look at suspensory injuries or similar soft tissue injuries of the leg.

The MRI will be able to take images from the carpus and hock down to the foot in the standing sedated horse.

What does CT/CAT scanner do?

CT/CAT is computed axial tomography - basically it provides a 3D xray which can be reconstructed to allow for high definition imaging of the bones of the body. CT imaging is used when looking at fractures, joint chips/fragments, arthritis, small bones and looking for stress fractures/stress injuries to the bone such as those sometimes seen in racehorses and high performance horses (barrels, jumpers, dressage, reiners etc).

The CT will be able to take images of the carpus and hock down to the foot in the standing sedated horse.

With these two imaging techniques available here in Manitoba, we will be able to take away the need for long distance travel to have high definition imaging performed and we will be able to increase the types of cases we can treat here at home saving the horses the physical issues of travel and saving the hassle/expense/lost days of travel.

Welcome to Dr. Taylor Ross

Dr. Ross is joining our practice starting this week and she will be our new junior associate working alongside our other vets and gaining further experience as an equine veterinarian. This is a unique experience and highly competitive position to attain. Dr. Ross will be seeing appointments, assisting in surgery and ICU care as well as learning from mentors in surgery, medicine, reproduction, sports medicine, emergency medicine, farm service and many more areas of equine practice.

A little bit about Dr. Ross

Taylor grew up on a cattle farm in Southwestern Manitoba where she developed her love for animals. Competing in equine events since the age of 5, horses have always been a huge part of her life.
After spending some time at Elder’s Equine Hospital during her final year in veterinary school she was excited at the prospect of joining the team as a junior associate in 2024.
Taylor enjoys all aspects of veterinary medicine with a special interest in reproduction and internal medicine. Meeting new people and providing high quality care to her patients is what drives her passion for veterinary medicine.
On her days off Taylor enjoys getting outside for a hike, riding horses and hanging out with her friends.
Taylor’s hopes for the future are to further grow and refine her skills as an equine practitioner so she can continue to provide the best care to her patients.

Welcome Dr. Ross and we are looking forward to adding about equine vet to Manitoba's roster ;)

We know you have been waiting for it - Bandit's review of ....

Re-Zorb PLUS

After a good workout, or during stressful times, Bandit appreciates all that Re-Zorb Plus has to offer! Re-Zorb Plus is an advanced blend of ingredients to help maintain electrolyte balance and support muscle recovery, after physical activity, transport, or during times of extreme heat. It has added BCAA’s (Branch Chain Amino Acids) that are important for muscle recovery and growth. It’s high palatability, powder form, and high solubility makes it the perfect choice for making a solution for use in a syringe or it can be mixed in with feed. It’s low sugar levels make it still highly beneficial and useful for IR horses.

Bandit's product review #5

Equitop Myoplast

Does your horse struggle with muscle growth or has difficulty coping with the demands of training? The active ingredient in Equitop Myoplast is algae powder (spirulina). It is a tasty pearl granule that horses love! Often referred to as a “superfood”, Spirulina is a natural algae, considered one of the best plant-based protein sources due to not just its high protein content, but also the high quality - containing all of the essential amino acids that horses need from their diet. It also provides a natural source of antioxidants to help neutralize the free radicals produced during exercise, and essential fatty acids to support the body's natural anti-inflammatory processes.

Bandit's product review #3:

Bandit unfortunately knows what it's like to be affected by stomach acid and ulcers. Does your horse suffer from the same?

AFX is a palatable liquid supplement that helps promote normal stomach pH and healthy gastric function. It can be used to buffer stomach acid and is a low-cost product that can help heal the stomach ulcers your equine friend suffers from. AFX can be given prior to riding or trailering. You will see a much more comfortable and calmer horse after use!

There are a few products that we recommend on a regular basis but we haven't had feedback directly from the horses mouth so we enlisted resident equine Bandit to provide some testimonials

4CYTE Equine Epiitalis Forte Gel

Bandit thinks every horse should be on 4CYTE!

What is 4cyte you ask? It’s a premium daily feed additive designed to support and maintain joint health. It utilizes the Epiitalis plant seed oil known for cartilage repair and pain relief properties! It addresses stiffness and lack of willingness to engage in activities such as jumping, cantering, or galloping. 4cyte can be used alongside prescription joint pain treatments to provide additional support. It can be used after joint injuries or surgeries, as it supports the healing process. The gel has undergone in-vitro and in-vivo clinical studies, providing a scientifically developed and backed product. Many of our clients swear by this product for their equine friends – both young and senior aged horses can benefit!

What makes us stand out? There are many good veterinarians around that can help you with your horse for all their routine day to day health care needs. Elders Equine is different! We are staffed by highly trained equine veterinarians that can provide high quality day to day health care needs and specialists to provide the care that goes beyond.

What makes us stand out? Our veterinary technicians are fully accredited registered veterinary technologists (RVT). This means that they have gone to college to specifically study to be a veterinary technologist. This allows our staff to perform many more tasks for your horse with skill, knowledge and precision which otherwise is not allowed from non-veterinary technologist assistants. If you want to spot the difference, ask if they are an RVT and discuss their training. Our staff are constantly updating their horse specific veterinary knowledge and assist in teaching RVT’s in our clinical setting.

What makes us stand out? Our facility and equipment which are second to none in the Province. As a primary care and referral hospital, we have the stalls, monitoring and precision, high-tech medical equipment needed to tackle whatever comes through the door. For your horse, this means that we can arrive at a diagnosis efficiently and accurately - ultimately saving you time, money and worry.

What makes us stand out? Our surgical capabilities - we are the only equine surgical and medical facility in the Province and service as far east as Thunder Bay and as far west as Regina and all points between. We have a board certified equine surgeon - a specialist in surgery. Our hospital and surgery suite are equipped to handle fractures, colics, arthroscopy, neurosurgery (head, neck and back), tendon/ligament surgery, airway surgery to name a few. We perform both standing procedures and traditional general anesthesia cases. Dr. Bell has performed the most standing tie back procedures and interspinous ligament desmotomy (kissing spine) procedures in Western Canada to date.
