I had a special guest in the arena today. “Iker” is a 3 year old mustang/wildie from the Sundre, Alberta area. Currently in the loving care of a sweet and kind trainer, Sarah Sitko, he will be up for adoption in the near future. Sarah has a show coming up with him soon, and wanted to see how he’d do with some obstacles. I must say, he was a rock star!! This guy is amazing - calm and quiet, and figured out all of the obstacles so quickly 😊 Good job Sarah, what a nice horse!!

It was 'train the trainer'... ummm rather: train the FACILITATOR at Cartier Farms 2024 EAL Symposium last weekend 😃 Great information, awesome learning, wonderful friendships and a LOT of fun! Thanks 22 St. gals for your camaraderie. I still can't believe 6 women shared a house with ONE bathroom and everything went smoothly 😆 Says a lot about who we are as a group! 😉 It was lovely meeting and working with everyone!!

With this incredible heat wave, I’ve been worried about my old guy. Last night he got a nice cool bath and some treats and got to stay indoors overnight. It’s only 18° in the barn. 

The horseflies have been driving him crazy, and he’s got a sunburn on his little nose. We are so fortunate now that I have options to keep him comfortable in his old age.

This morning he got his breakfast on the lawn. He looks pretty happy, as am I to still have him in my life!!

From now until the end of September, we are offering reduced rates for haul-in riders! Arena is closed to haul-ins Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings (5-9 pm) for private rental. So true.

In terms of bad horsemanship, there are few things worse than doing things that make a horse nervous and anxious, and then punishing the horse for the “bad” behavior that the rider caused.

And every day, any place that humans deal with horses, this is exactly what we see so much of.

It is easier and more satisfying to blame the horse than to blame our inability to train and ride well.

Learning how to ride and train well enough to create calm, willing partners is hard. Not too many riders can do it, but most think they can.

And that’s why the vicious circle keeps playing out, the rider does something to make the horse worry. The worried horse reacts. The rider punishes the reaction. The horse gets more worried and ramps up the reaction, which makes the already annoyed or angry rider react with MORE pressure, and yet another World War Three is under way. We watch this all the time.

Go for a walk instead, Learn to ride, maybe?

Confidence can be created in so many ways. THIS is one!

This is my story and it's why I'm so passionate about horses and helping others.

“I was about 6 years old when I discovered horses at my Grandfather’s hobby farm. My best friend in grade school had a horse and I tagged along to her events whenever I could. I thought she was the luckiest kid in the world.
As a teenager, I BEGGED my parents to let me have a horse. Nope. I was raised to be ‘invisible’ and always felt like I didn’t matter. As an adult, I was afraid to be seen. Call it imposter syndrome, lack of self worth, lack of self confidence... etc. etc.
That was me.
Fast forward to 1999 when I bought my first horse. I still have him, plus a few more. I’ve spent a huge part of my life learning, riding, experiencing and dreaming about anything ‘equine’ These magical beings have a way of making me feel worthy.
When a horse approaches, offers affection or acknowledgement or simply allows me to be in their presence, my whole sense of self worth changes. It is VERY powerful.
I, like many other women, have spent my life helping others - raising good kids, building my husband’s business and hobbies, and taking care of a home and everything that goes with that.
Now, it’s my turn... I am taking my love for horses and the magic they create and sharing it with others in an amazing, insightful program called Equine Assisted Learning.
I like the new me and I owe it all to horses, and to a very special friend who gave me a little push”

Did you know that the Equine Assisted Learning program that Anne Lamers / 3 Painted Ponies teaches has 15 different exercises…all with different objectives!!

For our Women’s Equine Empowerment Workshop, we facilitate a different one each time…meaning you could totally come back for another round 😉

Our last event exercise was Blindman’s Adventure.

I was merely present and taking pictures, and I felt empowered…so I can only imagine how empowering it must be for those taking part.

On Feb 10, we will be hosting the Maze and/or Get ‘R Done…both are exercises in Team Work and Problem Solving.

We’re looking for women who want to connect with horses, other like-minded women…and themselves.
