Hi everyone, I am thinking of running a Basic Obedience Class . Would there be enough interest? I am thinking retirement is not keeping my brain going and I miss working with dogs.

Just a spring puppy fix for me. Missing seeing them.

We are beyond excited to have Sandi Strause author of “Train Your Dog the Positive Way” with us to do Puppy Training Classes starting March 1st at the Spruce Grove location.

Class will take place each Wednesday in March from 7pm to 8pm.

Sandi will cover topics that involve Basic Manners, as well as covering some strategies to overcome some of the common challenges experienced with a puppy.

Please bring your pet in on a leash! We will have some light refreshments, and coupons for each participant to use at the Spruce Grove location.

Cost to participate is $200 and that covers all 5 weeks. Cash is preferred but we can accept payment at Pet Foods Etc Spruce Grove if another form of payment is better. Please phone 780-962-6212 (leave a voicemail if necessary) or DM us to register as class size is limited.

Please be advised that classes are not suited for reactive or potentially reactive dogs, but we do have some workshops planned for April pertaining specially to reactive dogs!!

Please restrain your desire to fuss my anxious dog.

My Cocker Spaniel Bella attracted a fair amount of attention when she was a puppy when we were out and about. People's faces used to light up when they saw her and they were eager to run their hands through her soft fur. It was like sprinkling magic doggy dust wherever we went. Contrary to what we’d all like to believe, dogs don’t always want to say “Hello” to you, or be stroked. It may seem normal, but can be extremely problematic. They don’t know you and they could be scared of you. The problem is to satisfy your desires and not to respect my dog's needs.

Always ask if you can approach a dog.

As with human-human touching, consent is important.

Please restrain your desire to fuss my dog and pay attention to my dog’s body language. Dog’s make it very clear when they’re unhappy, so understand the signs, teach your children, and treat the dog owner with respect. A responsible owner of an anxious and reactive dog will always have management tools in place. Bella is always out in public in her yellow space awareness harness and lead.

If a dog is in yellow then that means they need space.

I promise I’m saying “no” from a place of love, but a place of love for my dog. It gives me no pleasure saying “no”. So please, stop looking at me like I’m a control freak. When she's on the lead, it’s my responsibility to read her body language and not subject her to something she doesn’t like.

Why do adults think it is ok to come straight up and touch my dog without asking? That’s not only rude, but it’s also dangerous. Give me a chance to warn you, she is scared of being touched because once it hurt her. She thinks that when you touch her it will cause her pain and discomfort. So she will communicate to you obviously in doggie language which is often not recognised by people. What would you say if she growled at you? This is my dog’s way of saying go away, I am scared of you.

So don’t go thinking I’m depriving her of love, she’s just not looking for any from strangers.

Not every dog loves attention. They don’t want it all the time, and they might not want any from you.

Hi there everyone. After much thought and discussion with my family, I have come to the decision to retire from dog training. I have been professionally training for 18 years. It is time for me to slow down and spend time with family and my animals.
I will still be around though. I plan to visit the local pet food stores and my book is always available.
I would like to thank all of my clients who entrusted me with their precious pups through training and my dog daycare. You are all very special to me and I have appreciated our time together.
Barkstreet Market and Pet Foods Etc. staff, you are the BEST! Thank you for your support and expertise in nutrition, which in turn helps with behaviours. You have always been there championing positive training methods. You have not seen the last of me though!

Join us for a special panel discussion on Facebook next week, where we’ll be discussing raw feeding, a movement which has become widely popular over the last few years.

According to Dr Nick Thompson, “Raw food is not a dirty word. It’s a logical, safe, simple and economic way to treat many of the otherwise daunting chronic pathologies that bog down daily practice.

“Raw food feeding for dogs and cats was unheard of 20 years ago. Today, in a number of mainstream practices, it is their preferred method of nutrition. Many vets up and down the country familiar with and encouraging the use of raw food.”

Curious about raw? Do join us with any questions you have - link in our bio to the event.

It’s pumpkin season! 🎃 If you're off to a pumpkin patch or picking up one or two from the supermarket, don't forget to get the dog one too! 🐕 This bowl (and bowel!) boosting superfood is highly beneficial for;
🧡 Boosting immune health
🧡 Improving skin & coat
🧡 Regulating bowel movement
🧡 Improve muscle health
🧡 Boost hydration
🧡 Reduce issues with diarrhea

Simply removing the seeds, steam or bake your pumpkin until the flesh is soft, scoop out the flesh and wait to cool before feeding. Freeze the rest into ice cube trays to use all winter!

I'm re sharing this as not only has it been ripped off and someone decided to make a bit of cash out of it , (thanks for thank) BUT it's important- I'm reposing as I am above and beyond people that are ignorant to the local laws. I am now after 11 weeks able to gently walk my dogs and make sure to do it where dogs are on lead after 11am.. l almost ended back in hospital today as so many don't think the law applies to them- in general PLEASE keep your dog under effective control and NO it's never good to sat they are friendly as the dog they are approaching may not be and their owner may not be either! Get a grip people- not everyone wants your fluffy Fido in their face or their dogs face- IF you have no vocal control please hire a trainer or keep them on least till you sort the situation.
