🇨🇦Happy Canada Day from our team at Garibaldi Veterinary Hospital!! 🇨🇦

We will be closed on Tuesday, July 1st to celebrate Canada Day!
We’ll be back bright and early on Wednesday, July 2nd.

Here are a few reminders to help your pets enjoy the celebrations as much as you do!
-Keep pets indoors during loud celebrations such as fireworks.
-Create a cozy hiding spot with their favorite blanket or toy
-Double-check ID tags in case they get spooked and run
-Ask us ahead of time about anxiety support if needed!

A little prep goes a long way in keeping your pets calm, comfy, and safe during the celebration.

As a reminder, as the weather warms up, we want to stress the importance of making sure your pet has access to shade and plenty of water. As always, NEVER leave your pet unattended in a vehicle, even for a moment.

If you have any concerns about your pet while we are closed, don’t forget about PetNurse! If your pet is ill or injured outside of our working hours, you can call our clinic at 604-898-9089 and choose to be transferred to a Registered Veterinary Nurse who can help evaluate the needs of your pet and give clear next steps including whether or not you should go to Mountainside Animal Emergency – Our nearest 24 hour emergency hospital.

Just a note to say we’ll be closing early today at 4pm, so that our team can join Dr. Honey and Janice at the celebration of their marriage! This is the fun way they have included their blended family of pets - by having them declare their support on their cocktail napkins! 🐶🐶🐶🐈‍⬛🦜
We will be back to regular hours tomorrow and we also offer PetNurse, a triage service aimed to give you 24/7 peace of mind and reduce your stress and inconvenience, by eliminating unnecessary trips to an emergency animal hospital. If your pet is injured or ill outside of our working hours, you can call our clinic at 604-898-9089 and choose to be transferred to a Registered Veterinary Nurse, who can help evaluate the severity of your pet’s health situation, determine urgency, and specify clear next steps.

Alternatively if you need to order food or prescriptions, or to book an appointment to see us, go to gvh.ca to access our online portal to request an appointment.

Poor Air Quality & Your Pets
With the wildfire currently burning close to home in Squamish we wanted to remind everyone that when air quality advisories are issued, many of the same warnings for humans tend to apply for cats, dogs and other animals. This would include avoiding any vigorous exercise and continuing to stay cool and hydrated. As most animals tend to spend their time closer to ground, they can sometimes be spared – since smoke is likely to hover higher in the air.

🌫️ Why Smoke Is Dangerous for Pets:
Smoke contains harmful pollutants like carbon monoxide, fine particulate matter (PM2.5), and toxic gases. These irritants can affect your pet's respiratory system, especially in animals with pre-existing conditions like asthma, bronchitis, or heart disease.

Some of the key risks include:
-Respiratory Irritation
-Lung Damage
-Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
-Hypoxia (Oxygen Deprivation)
-Worsening of Pre-existing conditions: Pets with heart disease, asthma, or chronic respiratory issues are at much higher risk of severe complications from even low levels of smoke.

Signs of Smoke Inhalation in Pets:
-Coughing or wheezing
-Difficulty breathing or rapid breathing
-Red, watery eyes
-Fatigue or weakness
-Disorientation or confusion
-Reduced appetite

What to do if you suspect smoke inhalation:
-Move your pet to fresh air immediately
Keep them calm and quiet
-Seek emergency veterinary attention
-If you pet collapses or struggles to breath, call ahead and transport them safely

How to Protect Your Pets:
-Keep pets indoors with windows and doors shut
-Avoid driving with open windows – Car air can be just as bad.
-Only take short potty breaks outside when necessary
-Avoid vigorous play or walks outdoors
-Wipe your pet’s fur and paws after going outside to remove ash and toxins
-Prepare a “go bag” with pet essentials in case of evacuation and know where you’ll go if evacuation becomes necessary and bring your pets with you.

💡 Remember: If the air isn’t safe for you to breathe, it’s not safe for your pet either. ❤️🐾

In light of this weekend’s soaring temperatures we’re reposting this important reminder:
🚨 Never Leave Your Dog in a Hot Car, Even for a Minute 🚨

Every year, dogs suffer and die from heatstroke after being left in parked cars. Even on a mild day, the temperature inside a vehicle can skyrocket within minutes.

🔥 On a 75°F (24°C) day, the inside of a car can hit 94°F (34°C) in 10 minutes
🔥 Cracking the windows does nothing to keep it safe
🔥 Dogs can suffer organ failure, brain damage, or death in under 15 minutes

Dogs don’t sweat like we do. They rely on panting to cool down, and in a hot car, it’s not enough.

💔 Don’t risk their life — not even for a quick stop.

🚨 If you see a dog inside a hot car:
- Call the RCMP non emergency line at 604.892.6100, or Squamish animal control at 604.815.5067. While you are waiting for their response you can note the license plate, vehicle colour, make and model and ask managers of nearby businesses to page the owner to return to their vehicle immediately.
- If you feel the animal is in distress, call 911 to dispatch the fire department, who can extract the animal from the car.
-While most people mean well when they say they’d be willing to break a glass window to get an animal out of a roasting vehicle, unfortunately, only RCMP and the local fire department have the authority to enter a vehicle lawfully to help a pet in distress.
-Stay with the animal until help arrives.

No errand is worth a life!

🐾 Bear Safety Tips for Pet Owners in Squamish 🐾

Living in beautiful Squamish means sharing our trails and backyards with wildlife - this hungry guy/girl was recently spotted passing through Janice and Dr Honey’s backyard! Spring and summer mean more bear sightings around town and on the trails! Our team at Garibaldi Veterinary Hospital wants to help you keep your pets safe during bear season. 🐻

Here are a few important tips to keep in mind:
✅ Keep dogs on leash during walks and hikes — even the friendliest pup can get into trouble if they surprise a bear.
✅ Avoid early morning or late evening walks, when bears are most active.
✅ Never leave pet food outside — it can attract bears right to your doorstep.
✅ Carry bear spray and know how to use it — just in case.
✅ If you see a bear, stay calm, back away slowly, and never run.

Prevention is key — Let’s keep our wild neighbors wild — and our furry companions safe!

If you have questions about wildlife safety or what to do in an emergency, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here for you and your furry family members. 💚

🌧️🐶 Wet Dog = Risk of Ear Infection🦻💦

Did you know that moisture in your dog’s ears—especially after swimming, baths, or rainy day adventures—can lead to ear infections?

Watch for these signs:
🔁 Head shaking
👂 Scratching or rubbing ears
😖 Redness, swelling, or a funky smell

Although it may seem counterintuitive to use a liquid ear cleaner on wet ears, the proper ear cleaners actually dry the ears by displacing water out of the ear canals, getting rid of moisture.

How to prevent ear infections?
✔️ Gently dry their ears after water fun (even after a walk in the rain)
✔️ Use a vet-approved ear cleaner — it helps by breaking down wax, drying excess moisture, and keeping the ear canal balanced and fresh
✔️ Never use cotton swabs (they can push debris deeper!)

If your dog’s ears seem uncomfortable, give us a call. We’re here to help keep those floppy (or pointy!) ears healthy and happy. 🐾💚

What an amazing day at the Youth Triathlon!
There’s nothing more inspiring than watching these young athletes give it their all—from the first splash to the final sprint. 🏊‍♂️🚴‍♀️🏃‍♂️

We here at Garibaldi Veterinary Hospital were very proud to sponsor and support our AMAZING Squamish youth at the 2025 Youth Triathlon. Some of our staff spent the morning directing racers and handing out medals as the kids hit that final home stretch, and we were cheering them on along the way. Our team realizes the importance of being out in the community and showing our support! We even had one of our own (one of our veterinarians and her son) in the race and were ecstatic to cheer him on! It was a beautiful day and we hope all the racers had as much fun as we did!

To all the kids who showed courage and determination—you are incredible. And to the volunteers and organizers: thank you for making it all happen! We will see you next year!
