May is Speech and Hearing Month ๐Ÿ‘„๐Ÿ‘‚

The Association of Allied Health Professionals is proud to recognize and celebrate Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPโ€™s), Audiologists, and Auditory-Verbal Therapists (AVTโ€™s) for their invaluable roles and dedication towards helping people communicate, here in our province and throughout the country.

The theme of Speech and Hearing month is โ€œCommunication isโ€ฆโ€ to help raise awareness of how vital communication is in our everyday lives and the importance of issues related to speech, language, swallowing, hearing, and balance.

Speech-Language Pathologists, Audiologists, and Auditory-Verbal Therapists are incredibly skilled, talented, and highly educated health professionals who work with children, adults, seniors, and families. They are experts in their fields, providing evidence-based care to individuals across the lifespan by identifying, assessing, and treating a range of speech, language, communication, hearing, balance, and swallowing disorders.

The profound impacts these health professionals have for the people they serve cannot be understated and extends beyond rehabilitation and recovery. Communication is the essence of human connection โ€“ thank you to our Speech-Language Pathologists, Audiologists and Auditory-Verbal Therapists for all you do.

PEIPA President, Sheila MacMurdo, had an in depth discussion with CBC News: Compass last evening surrounding Physiotherapists ordering diagnostic imaging on PEI! The PEIPA has been advocating for this initiative for years. Advocacy is moving in the right direction and we are hopeful to follow in the footsteps of Nova Scotia and allow P.E.I. Physiotherapists to work to their full of scope of practice.

Starting in early Spring, all qualified physiotherapists in Nova Scotia (including those working in private practice), will be able to refer patients for x-rays.

โ€œThis announcement will optimize the scope of practice for Nova Scotia physiotherapists who work in private practice and as a result, improve timely access for patients needing general radiography,โ€ says Monica MacDonald, President of the Nova Scotia Physiotherapy Association. โ€œIt will save patients from unnecessary additional appointments to get a requisition if an x-ray is deemed necessary. We are excited to better support our patients and help them efficiently navigate the healthcare system.โ€

It is encouraging to see reductions in system barriers that will expedite diagnosis and treatment, in turn leading to improved outcomes for patients.

Physiotherapists working to their full scope of practice are able to help alleviate the strain on our healthcare system.

Thanka Ryan for the shovelling segment! Great education.

Itโ€™s tempting to dig into whatโ€™s at the end of the driveway without warming up, but shovelling without stretching can be a bad combination. Registered physiotherapist Ryan Sparkes runs through his routine and offers up some tips to prevent injury while hoisting that shovel.
