! Thank you to everyone who donated, shared, or just showed up to support what we’re doing. You’re the reason we can keep making a difference. Making a difference for animals like Billy. Billy spent the last 13 years living free-range on a farm with his mom. They were inseparable. But when his mom passed away, Billy wandered off the property searching for her. I got a call asking if we could give Billy a home. My heart broke for this old guy who had just lost his mom and his home all at once, so I went and picked him up. The transition was tough on Billy. Within days, he was struggling—not only with grief but also with the stress of moving and his age catching up to him. We took him to the Ontario Vet College, where a CT scan revealed severe arthritis in several areas, including his neck. Thankfully, with pain relief, Billy has improved a lot. We’ll continue working closely with our vet to ensure he stays comfortable in his golden years. Billy deserves all the love and care we can give him, and we’re honoured to be his new family.

Twenty-five years ago today, these two entered the world!
Life at the sanctuary kept us busy, so Patrick and Cicada, with help from their dad, built a half-pipe in the barn loft—a spot that became a favorite hangout for many kids over the years. Now, they’re sharing a place together in BC, living a vegan life! 😊

Our hearts are heavy as we say goodbye to our friend Shorty. While we’ve faced many losses, some are harder to bear, and losing Shorty is one of them. She came into our lives 3.5 years ago after enduring eight long years in a breeding operation, where she gave birth to litter after litter. She gave birth to over 300 babies, which were taken away from her over and over again. Pigs are very maternal and love their babies.

We’re grateful that in her final years, Shorty experienced the warmth of sunshine, the feel of green grass beneath her feet, the joy of mud wallows, the taste of amazing fresh food, and the friendship of her new family, Oink and Cromwell. Rest In Peace, Shorty ❤️

Kenny didn’t have the best day and ended up in the vet clinic for X-rays to see how serious the break was. Thankfully, it was a clean break, so after a couple of months of stall rest, he should be back to normal. Thanks to our team of vets that gave him the best care!

Shorty has been dealing with mobility issues, which are being managed with pain medication, though she’s noticeably slowed down. She spent eight long years in an industrial pig barn, producing litter after litter, which ultimately saved her from slaughter because she did a “good job.”

Shorty still gets up to enjoy her nutritious meals, though very finicky about what she’ll eat, and the company of her friends Oink & Cromwell.

Happy World Vegan Day

Veganism is often seen as a dietary choice, the meals we eat at the dinner table. For many, the food we eat was a gateway into the world of veganism as a social justice issue. Many of us learned about animal agriculture and didn't want to support that violence and exploitation. For some, we learned about the ways in which nonhuman animals are used in testing and research and that began a process of unveiling the realities that plague nonhuman animals around the world. For others, it was the feathers inside their winter coat or the fur trim, the wool on their toque or perhaps the animals behind bars at their local zoo. Many rode horses and started to recognize the inherent inequity in doing that or perhaps went to the aquarium or on a dog sled ride.

For many of us, we grew up with these injustices woven into our very existence because it was all so normalized and we didn't think twice. It takes a lot to be awoken to the truth about exploitation and oppression when it comes to nonhuman animals. Some industries seemingly innocent and not so-called "cruel" slip through the cracks. It takes some deep reflection on the big picture which extends far beyond the treatment of the victims trapped within these industries and that is the use of their bodies for human gain - be it for entertainment, clothing, to make products we use daily like shampoo or cosmetics or to consume.

Once we recognize that nonhuman animals do not exist for us to do what we want with, to serve us and our greed - we experience a complete mindset shift and way in which we see the world and those we share it with. Nonhuman animals of all species have every right to be here, to exist free from harm and exploitation and deserve our respect and decency.

When we know better, we do better. It can be difficult to wrap our heads around the myriad of ways in which humanity has come to oppress other beings, but we have the power to make different choices each and every day to not only not support the industries that commodify them, but take action to change this violent reality and create a world filled with peace for all nonhuman animals.

Be fair. Be just. Be vegan.

Every Sunday, Pete visits his mom and recently started bringing Pinto along. His mom, who just turned 91 last month, doesn’t get out much, so Pinto’s weekly visits have become a special highlight for her.
Pinto was a tiny kitten when she came early last month. She was suffering from an infection, worms, and fleas. She has been treated and is loving life. Her name couldn’t be more fitting—she’s full of beans! ☺️

Celebrate Life! Freida is a few months shy of her 6th birthday! Freida would have been hatched around this time and sent to slaughter 4 months later. Thankfully, she fell from the truck and has lived with us for almost 6 years!
