I shall
Gather up
All the lost souls
That wander this earth
All the ones that are alone
All the ones that are broken
All the ones that never really fitted in
I shall gather them all up
And together we shall find our home

A little poem written by Athey Thompson

This picture is of Camberley Kate, who was well known in Camberley as the lady who would wander the streets with her “stray dogs” cart and gather up all the waifs and strays. It is said that during her life she rescued and gave a loving home to over 600 homeless dogs.
Today, I’m honouring this inspirational lady who devoted her life to saving dogs. And what a legacy she did leave behind, and to all the animals, we must be kind.

Spay and neuter!

08/08/2024

Yet another seizure of 137 dogs. This time from a home north of Winnipeg. The animals were found in distress and need to be vetted. The Winnipeg Humane Society has taken on their care while seeking out of province rescues for assistance. The WHS is beyond full. This is a crisis and has been for some time.

Manitoba NEEDS stronger legislation (and enforcement) for neglect and abuse, along with increased ongoing funding for spay and neuter clinics.

Please contact the following and respectfully ask them to step up and start solving the dog and cat overpopulation problem in our province. Rescues are drowning, animals are suffering, and our elected officials need to start listening and acting.

Please also support your local rescues, sanctuaries, and humane societies/SPCA's.

Saw this on another rescuers page and wanted to share here for everyone to read ❤

😥Animal Rescue Reality Check😥

With all the compassion fatigue warnings, we would like to remind all rescuers (including ourselves) that it is okay to say no, it’s okay to shut your phone off, it’s okay to make a bad decision, it’s okay to fall asleep, it’s okay to leave the litter box until morning.

For people needing a rescuer, please make it as easy as possible. Do not ask for a miracle, do not blame if something goes wrong, do not expect your rescuer to do everything for you. Make an effort to help! Offer to help transport, offer to donate money or goods.

Rescuers have a hard time saying no, it eats them alive. They have a heart and mind that won’t stop thinking about a dying animal. An animal they could help if only they had the energy, If only they had the time, if only they had the money, if only someone would help.

Trust us, if you are asking a rescuer for help, that rescuer has at least 10 other people asking along with you in a given day. Along with running to pick up, drop off, go to vet appointments, save lives, bottle feed, deal with feeding, cleaning and medicating and answering messages- we all have families and full time jobs as we are unpaid volunteers.

We may sometimes choose what we do, but rescuers are who we are.

PLEASE BE KIND TO YOUR RESCUER!!

SAD STATE OF AFFAIRS

I was having a conversation with someone I know who works in addictions treatment and discovered something very unsettling.

We often assume people abandon their pets outside because they don't care about them and don't want them anymore. That may well be the case for some individuals, but there are other reasons for this and it was a surprise to me.

People who go in for addictions treatment, or become incarcerated, often have pets. Some of those people do not have anywhere to put their pets, or anyone to look after them while they are in treatment. Surrendering a pet takes a long time and often, the wait list exceeds the time they have before they must go into treatment. Some treatment is voluntary but some is mandated by corrections or another department and they aren't given a timeline based on their living situation.

What do these people do with their pets? Some may have friends or family who can look after them until they get back. Some may be lucky enough to find a foster, rescue or they may surrender to WHS. But those who can't?

They sometimes put their pets outside with the hope of finding them when they get back. How sad is that?

Here's the kicker, though. Sometimes, there is no coming back. People who have gone through treatment are often encouraged to seek a living situation away from the area where they were living when they were using. Some go into longer-term recovery situations and cannot have pets with them.

While I don't have the answers about how to help in these situations, it shows that not everyone who puts an animal outside is doing so out of a lack of empathy. It's the lack of options. Considering animals are often used to help in recovery and mental health situations, it's a problem worth solving.

PAWsitive Recovery in the US has helped many people by using a network of dedicated foster homes as well as volunteers who bring pets to visit with their humans while in they are in recovery.

Why not Winnipeg?

When things get a little overwhelming, it’s time to take a mental break.
We’ve been working very hard this past couple years without a break and it’s affecting our overall health. We’re taking a much needed and deserved timeout for as long as it takes. We thank all our followers and friends for your support and hope to be getting back to business asap.
Please no rescue calls for now.
Thank you!

This showed up in my memories today.
Hello Whiskers first official adoption one year ago. Woody is living his best life with his loving family and we couldn’t be happier!🥰❤️
Side note.
We rescued Woodys mother several months earlier. Lacey is still in need of a forever home.

Please, be like Caroline.❤️

Please, be like Caroline.❤️

This is Caroline. She moved overseas with all her animals.
She never wrote on Facebook "I'm giving up my cats and dogs because I'm moving"or I'm having a baby or I've had the animal a year, two years or more and now I suddenly don't have time for it or can't afford to feed it.
So, when you get an animal, remember that it’s a fragile creature, part of the family and must follow you everywhere you go, otherwise don’t get one!!
Be like Caroline.
