🎄12 DANGERS OF CHRISTMAS🎄

DAY 4: TOXIC CHRISTMAS PLANTS 🪴

There are several Christmas plants that can be toxic to pets. Here are some common ones to be aware of:

1. Poinsettias: While not as toxic as once believed, they can still cause mild irritation to the mouth and stomach, leading to vomiting.

2. Holly: The berries can be toxic and may cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea if ingested.

3. Mistletoe: Both the leaves and berries are toxic and can lead to gastrointestinal upset and even more severe symptoms.

4. Christmas Cactus: While generally considered non-toxic, it can still cause mild digestive upset if eaten.

5. Amaryllis: This plant can cause significant gastrointestinal upset and other symptoms if ingested.

To keep your pets safe, it’s best to avoid having these plants in your home or ensure they are placed out of reach. Always consult with a veterinarian if you suspect your pet has ingested any toxic plants.

🎄12 DANGERS OF CHRISTMAS🎄

DAY 2: ANTI-FREEZE TOXICITY❄️

Antifreeze is highly toxic to cats, primarily because it contains ethylene glycol, which has a sweet taste that can attract them. Even a small amount can lead to severe health issues, including kidney failure.

Symptoms of antifreeze poisoning in cats can include vomiting, lethargy, increased thirst, and seizures. If you suspect your cat has ingested antifreeze, it's crucial to seek veterinary help immediately, as prompt treatment can be lifesaving. Always ensure that antifreeze is stored securely and cleaned up spills to prevent accidental ingestion.

Okay, I’m a little late to the show but I’m going to share these anyways!

DAY 1: CHOCOLATE TOXICITY🍫

Chocolate can be very toxic to dogs, especially around Christmas when there might be more chocolate treats around. It's important to keep any chocolate products well out of your dog's reach.

If a dog ingests chocolate, it can lead to symptoms like vomiting, diarrhoea, rapid breathing, and even seizures, depending on the amount consumed and the type of chocolate.

If you suspect your dog has eaten chocolate, it’s best to contact us immediately for advice. Make sure to keep an eye on your pup during the festive season!🐶

📢 Meet Kipper and Sonny – Urgent Foster Homes Needed! 🏡

These two sweet souls are in desperate need of foster homes after the sudden passing of their owner. They’re currently in a boarding facility, but they deserve the comfort and love of a home. Can you help?

💙 Sonny is just 8 months old and would adapt well to any loving home.
💗Kipper is 5 years old and prefers a quiet, country home with no small kids or other pets.

Both are used to country living and would thrive in rural settings. They are absolutely lovely and ready to bring so much joy to the right foster homes.

If you can open your heart and home to Sonny, Kipper, or both, please reach out! Let’s help them transition from this difficult time into a brighter future.

🐾 Please share to spread the word!

If you would like to foster please submit a foster application- https://www.gratefulfriendsanimalrescue.com/foster/info

Management!

Management!

ARE YOU MANAGING?
Are you managing your dog’s environment to prevent or improve unwanted behaviour?

As people, we tend to prefer and look for the more complicated solutions to problems. This tendency is termed “complexity bias” - the tendency to prefer complicated explanations and solutions instead of looking for the simpler ones.

Surely a complicated, time consuming, detailed solution has to be more effective, superior, impressive, or correct?

Complexity bias is so relevant when it comes to changing a dog’s unwanted behaviour. We often get so stuck on trying to modify behaviour through counter conditioning, desensitization or detailed training plans when sometimes the simplest solution to the problem lies in simply managing the environment.

Dogs will do what dogs do – when an opportunity arises to help themselves to food left on a table, to bark at the gate at anyone passing by, to have a drink from that big water bowl at the perfect height, that we call a toilet, to running off with irresistibly smelly dirty underwear, to rummaging through bins in search of anything that may or may not be edible, to running out an opened door in search of adventure - the list is long - dogs will be dogs.

Parents of little children use management all the time without giving it much thought. Baby locks on cupboards, covers on electrical sockets, valuable or dangerous items put far out of reach, fences and locks around pools, etc.

We wouldn’t just train a toddler not to stick their fingers in an electrical socket, not to open cupboards, not to touch a hot plate – it’s far safer, simpler and logical to first manage the environment, to prevent potential incidents.

The same principle should apply to managing a dog’s environment to prevent unwanted behaviour.

The more a behaviour is practiced the more difficult it is to prevent. The more a behaviour is rehearsed the better dogs become at it.

Preventing the behaviour from happening in the first place by using management is the logical, simple and effective way to address it.

Be a good manager – it’s far less stressful, for both us and our dogs.

👋🏻 Hello Handlers!

I have taken a short break from classes at the moment just to catch up on winter prep work and some spoiling time for my own pups to enjoy the yard in this gorgeous fall weather we have been having! It was a busy summer of classes and this not so small yard comes with a lot of work this time of year prepping for winter!

Thank you all for your patience and understanding while I plan for winter classes to fire up shortly!

My hounds have been enjoying this time to spend playing in the leaves and ofcourse posing for fall pictures!

I hope everyone has a fantastic Halloween 🎃 and I will be making a post for all of you to share with us your great doggy costumes!

Stay tuned for upcoming class dates in the next couple weeks!

Thanks from myself, Lachlan, Moose, Luka and Jade!
