MOTHER AND SON
I turned around to look at them for the last time before leaving and this is the scene I saw, FireFly nursing her firstborn. It was a quick snack for Morningstar, that's all he asks for nowadays between his naps and playtime with his brother. These moments, as infrequent as they are continue strengthen the special mother-son bond they share. It's so beautiful.

This morning Mikado wasn't going to miss out on getting some scratches for himself. He had to wait in the line, however, for his "mothers", one birth, one adoptive one to finish their own session. A DIFFERENT HORSE
Some time in July we started noticing a subtle change in FireFly's appearance. As time went on the colour of her coat deepened more and more, from the sun kissed fawn that set her well apart from Kabriole's fire red, to this dark, cool chestnut, almost a liver chestnut. The contrast between her mane and body became even more stark now, it's incredible. We're looking at a completely different horse. Her winter coat always comes in darker, however there is more to it this time, she is DARK. To compare, I included a photo from exactly a year ago, hopefully you can appreciate the difference. FireFly is full of surprises! What's not a surprise at all is that I couldn't get her head up for one single photo 😁

LET'S PLAY, PLEEEESE?
Alberta is currently experiencing a heat wave that shows no signs of easing in the next two weeks. It's hot... The relief comes in the evening, when the sun finally sinks below the horizon, and that's when the playtime starts! Mikado plays a tough cookie, but it's all a part of the game as well and soon the chasing and the sparring begins!

THE WONDERFUL ABUNDANCE
From one little red cup to another, the trail of mushrooms took me along the path the horses frequent every day. It quickly became obvious I needed more than just my hands to hold all I was finding, how fortunate there is no shortage of horse feed buckets around! Some for immediate use, some for drying, we'll be enjoying this wonderful gift from Mother Nature long after Summer is over!

JUST A LITTLE BREAK
Sometimes a girl needs a break from it all, time alone, a little bit of pampering and attention. There isn't much we can do about her mane Morningstar "ate" this spring when his mother was still the center of his world, but FireFly enjoyed the one on one time I could give her. Beethoven enjoys having a full view of the pasture where the mares and the foals reside and the privilege of visiting with them over the fence. He watches his grandkids' antics with interest, although he would probably prefer to chat with their moms! ;)))
