A MEMORY
This is FireFly a year ago 💗
She was in great shape. So much happened since then, it was a busy year for her! Her silhouette has changed quite a bit...and continues to change a little bit every day. I think her rounded belly is the most beautiful thing ever.

CANADIAN INSPIRED
Just a pretty Canadian mare on a crisp February morning. Winter and its colour palette is completely dominated by blue... Everything in sight assumes a degree of it, even the yellow and rust of the old growth poking through the snow. At least that's what I see;)) I thought that Gwen accented this lovely Winter scene perfectly with her red coat. Bay Canadians in Winter, what a perfect colour palette inspiration :)

TWO BELLIES
280 days ago the first out of the two miracles happened:)) The second one took place about eight days later and ever since my days have become a scramble of happiness and anticipation mixed with a good dose of paranoia. These two bellies are responsible for it! I'm thinking of all the breeders out there watching their mares and counting days, you got this! 💗

LOOKING GREAT, FEELING FANTASTIC
The mares are looking fantastic. The snacking they're doing between the feedings forces them to work their bodies all day. They're keeping fit in preparation for the day we're all waiting for, the BIG DAY! Gwen is usually the first one to finish her meal and head out, and the rest soon follows.

SNOWY DAYS
The crew is finishing their supper. It's snowing today and it might continue over the weekend. I often bring my coffee with me and from the inside of their shelter I watch them savouring each bite of hay they find. Crunch, crunch, crunch...the sound of horses eating feels therapeutic. Does anyone else do that? You should try it, it's awesome :))

ROLLY POLLY;)
After breakfast #1 and a good drink FireFly followed Gwen out for... breakfast #2.
First things first, when a mood comes on, you must act on it - I was amazed watching her being able to roll her growing tummy over to the other side, and on the incline, too! I remember seeing Morgan in that exact area, it must be a popular spot.

SMART COOKIE, KABRIOLE!
This beautiful filly makes me so happy. I love her independent and curious nature and her friendly demeanour. She's incredibly smart and is able to "connect the dots" very quickly! Kabriole, being the youngest and the slowest eater gets to have her meals separately from the others. She understands the routine perfectly and is first in line at the gate. It took her only about three times to figure out that the gate won't open till she wears her halter. Now she's looking for it herself, smart filly!

ONE MONTH TO GO
It's good to leave the farm from time to time and Beethoven makes the most perfect walking companion. I'm almost able to ignore the ice covering the road and the pinch of cold on my face - my mind is already in "the Spring mode". Seasons change quickly and suddenly in Alberta. Today I noticed a few stray hairs on both, Kabriole and FireFly! Seems early, but you know what that means;))

BRUNCH TIME
After a momentary pause, Gwen decided she wasn't going to be hanging around the paddock by herself and hurried to join the rest for the "brunch" by the pond.
So thankful for the most gorgeous day, full of sunshine:)

SOMETHING IN THE TREES
This morning we found FireFly standing alone and completely fixated on something in the distance. She was standing there motionless, snorting like a dragon and visibly alarmed. A moose, perhaps? We couldn't see anything, but she obviously did. Whatever it was investigating it took priority over the fact that the rest of her herd was already in the paddock and waiting for breakfast. Eventually, she made her way back, joining everyone for a meal. I was able to snap a few photos of her striding through the snow, our lovely FireFly girl 💗

A balmy -27°C morning here, brrrr! We have another cold night in the forecast before we can expect a warmer trend beginning later this week... A typical January rollercoaster, only in Alberta;)

AFTER THE STORM
And what a night it was... We were happy to find all the horses in good spirits, impatiently waiting for breakfast. I was expecting to see much more snow on the ground, but I guess the 90km/h winds blew it all away;)) Besides a few fallen trees Beethoven and I found along the road all evidence of last night's chaos is gone. Even the thick, crusty layer on everyone's backs melted away. Who else is counting days till Spring???

FIRST ANNIVERSARY
Exactly a year ago on Jan 14 we brought Kabriole home. It was a -40°C night, the world was petrified with the arctic cold and the air was deathly still. I had well founded concerns for the well being of our trailer's precious cargo. I have a picture of her seconds before she stepped off the trailer, and it makes me giggle every time I look at it! Ooooohh, so spicy and a fighter, frosted up like a snowman and ready to make her opinion known! She was adorable ( still is)!
It feels like it's been much longer than a year since her arrival, like she was meant to be here and we can't imagine our herd without her. While her beauty is undeniable, we enjoy her sweet, lively personality and we love her to pieces! Sarrabelle Papillon Kabriole 💗

NEWS FROM LANCASTER
A few still frames from the recent video of Lancaster at his current home in Vermont. He's fluffy, full of life and growing like a w**d! His weaning has already begun and it's going fantastic in the company of the other two foals, Luna and Lutin. We're one step closer to meeting this guy, the preparations for his trek West are under way!
Thank you Three Fold Farm for all the early education he's getting under in care.

THE MOON ABOVE 🌓
Tonight we had no trouble finding our way around, it was as bright as day. The Moon was hanging so high up I couldn't quite capture it in the frame together with FireFly. Clear sky, finally! The supper was served under a billion of stars...

LESSON OF PATIENCE
Between the two, FireFly is still #1. That number might still change one day, who knows;)) Right now, though it's Kabriole who must wait for her turn by the waterer! She tried, and tried, but had to be patient. It was interesting to watch their conversation. The message was loud and clear, "Kid, you wait!"

IT'S A NAP TIME Every morning around 9:30-10 all horses stop what they're doing ( yes, even eating;), gather in the paddock or pick a spot in the shelter and have a nap. Like one man, everyone will spend a couple of hours resting while soaking up the sunshine. "COVER ME IN SUNSHINE" What a change of mood today, we got our wish - what a beautiful day! I took a closer look at the pasture, so much snow. The herd is working hard for every bite, that's for sure. -13 felt amazing this morning and it was great to hang out with the girls ( and boys), soaking up the sunshine. CRUSHING IT;)) I put together a video to celebrate Gwen's first solo ride she did this past weekend. The trails were all ours that day, just a few last visitors, no other horses and Gwen did fabulous! As my son would say, "She crushed it!" 😎 #maresofIronRose #Gwen #CanadianHorses

LESSON OF BUSHWALKING! We took it into the trees yesterday. I couldn't video the best moments as I was trying to protect my knees and face from the tree trunks and brush;)) Gwen will develop spatial awareness one day ( a great benefit to the rider, haha!) and softness and responsiveness to the seat and reins that will keep us both safe and communication flowing clearly. We started working towards that! I made sure we broke as many dry branches above her head and around us as possible. We pushed through the thickness of young trees, made lots of noise, challenged her by losing sight of others in the shadows of wooded areas she was concerned about. Searching for Kabriole who walked away from everyone and hid in the bush was a fantastic opportunity for the first lesson! #bushwackingwithCanadians #GwentheCanadianHorse #CanadiansinAlberta
