AFTER THE STORM
And what a night it was... We were happy to find all the horses in good spirits, impatiently waiting for breakfast. I was expecting to see much more snow on the ground, but I guess the 90km/h winds blew it all away;)) Besides a few fallen trees Beethoven and I found along the road all evidence of last night's chaos is gone. Even the thick, crusty layer on everyone's backs melted away. Who else is counting days till Spring???

FIRST ANNIVERSARY
Exactly a year ago on Jan 14 we brought Kabriole home. It was a -40°C night, the world was petrified with the arctic cold and the air was deathly still. I had well founded concerns for the well being of our trailer's precious cargo. I have a picture of her seconds before she stepped off the trailer, and it makes me giggle every time I look at it! Ooooohh, so spicy and a fighter, frosted up like a snowman and ready to make her opinion known! She was adorable ( still is)!
It feels like it's been much longer than a year since her arrival, like she was meant to be here and we can't imagine our herd without her. While her beauty is undeniable, we enjoy her sweet, lively personality and we love her to pieces! Sarrabelle Papillon Kabriole 💗

NEWS FROM LANCASTER
A few still frames from the recent video of Lancaster at his current home in Vermont. He's fluffy, full of life and growing like a w**d! His weaning has already begun and it's going fantastic in the company of the other two foals, Luna and Lutin. We're one step closer to meeting this guy, the preparations for his trek West are under way!
Thank you Three Fold Farm for all the early education he's getting under in care.

THE MOON ABOVE 🌓
Tonight we had no trouble finding our way around, it was as bright as day. The Moon was hanging so high up I couldn't quite capture it in the frame together with FireFly. Clear sky, finally! The supper was served under a billion of stars...

LESSON OF PATIENCE
Between the two, FireFly is still #1. That number might still change one day, who knows;)) Right now, though it's Kabriole who must wait for her turn by the waterer! She tried, and tried, but had to be patient. It was interesting to watch their conversation. The message was loud and clear, "Kid, you wait!"

WHAT OUR HORSES TAUGHT US
So we made it, hello New Year! What do you have in store for us? Does anyone ever wish for a crystal ball? Not me! ;))) Our lives with horses taught me to remain flexible, never count on any of my plans to go as expected and to enjoy every moment like it's the last. My human nature still struggles with that idea, but my instincts tell me it's the right way to go. Acceptance and Humility.
We have a general outline for this year and for our program, but will be stopping at that. The Universe will put its own spin on it as usual! We might as well enjoy what we have, because what we have already is a gift 💗

BEST WALKING PARTNER
Another day full of sunshine, just as we ordered;)) It was so nice to take a walk with Beethoven, the best walking partner a person could ask for. The fields are difficult to access nowadays, but that's ok, because we always have "our" road available as an option. What a beautiful day!

A CHRISTMAS GIFT
So grateful... I couldn't imagine a more perfect day to have another practice with Gwen. She's in the very beginning of work in harness right now, just learning to understand basic commands and what they mean. She's doing very well!
Spending this Christmas Day afternoon with our horses was a gift I'm not taking for granted. I was reminded once again of how fortunate I am. I hope that you also had an opportunity to do the same, wherever you are. Family, our animals, good times, memories made - these things just can't fit under the tree yet they mean the most. Merry Christmas!

THOSE BRILLIANT REDHEADS
A bright, sunny morning after a foggy night. The herd was back from the pasture and resting in their usual spot. The red of the girls' coats seemed even brighter today.

"COVER ME IN SUNSHINE"
What a change of mood today, we got our wish - what a beautiful day! I took a closer look at the pasture, so much snow. The herd is working hard for every bite, that's for sure.
-13 felt amazing this morning and it was great to hang out with the girls ( and boys), soaking up the sunshine.
Wobble, wobble, wobble, I watched Gwen and FireFly go get a drink, their tummies swinging from side to side 💗

SNOW DAY
I realized that every post lately shows our horses in the classical this time of year pose... heads down and eating. It's incredibly hard to surprise these guys because as soon as they see us or hear us they come thundering from wherever they might be. Today they were waiting, covered thickly with brand new snow blankets. I felt so sorry seeing their hopeful faces and I cracked - each got a little, "feel better" pile of hay;) I think it worked!

A GLIMPSE INTO THE FUTURE
It's Winter in Vermont and it matches ours. I was so happy to find another message from Margo this morning, another update on Lancaster 💗 Always a treat!
He's growing beautifully, big and handsome. All of a sudden I can see a glimpse of him as an adult when I'm looking at this picture...
His weaning time is approaching, after that it's up to Mother Nature to bring Spring early, clear the roads and keep everyone safe during his journey to Alberta. Lancaster might be arriving in the midst of foaling period at Iron Rise. Oh, it'll be busy and chaotic, and exciting all at once! A big year for all of us.

ALBERTA WINTER 101
It's snowing again and the white blankets on everyone's backs are getting thicker and thicker. Recent rain and above zero temperatures turned snow into slush that froze now. It's not without its benefits - the pasture is in "cold storage"... till Spring!

WINTER DINING
I had to eat my own words, I'm grateful for the snow we received. It covered up and limited access to our winter pasture enough that the horses can now be allowed back there for a bit. Their pasture time had to be restricted quite drastically up until now - "round" isn't always a good thing! Happy ponies, they don't mind working for their meals at all. Especially on a day like today - it looked like winter, but it felt like Spring.
Glorious.

IT'S A NAP TIME Every morning around 9:30-10 all horses stop what they're doing ( yes, even eating;), gather in the paddock or pick a spot in the shelter and have a nap. Like one man, everyone will spend a couple of hours resting while soaking up the sunshine. CRUSHING IT;)) I put together a video to celebrate Gwen's first solo ride she did this past weekend. The trails were all ours that day, just a few last visitors, no other horses and Gwen did fabulous! As my son would say, "She crushed it!" 😎 #maresofIronRose #Gwen #CanadianHorses

LESSON OF BUSHWALKING! We took it into the trees yesterday. I couldn't video the best moments as I was trying to protect my knees and face from the tree trunks and brush;)) Gwen will develop spatial awareness one day ( a great benefit to the rider, haha!) and softness and responsiveness to the seat and reins that will keep us both safe and communication flowing clearly. We started working towards that! I made sure we broke as many dry branches above her head and around us as possible. We pushed through the thickness of young trees, made lots of noise, challenged her by losing sight of others in the shadows of wooded areas she was concerned about. Searching for Kabriole who walked away from everyone and hid in the bush was a fantastic opportunity for the first lesson! #bushwackingwithCanadians #GwentheCanadianHorse #CanadiansinAlberta

CHICKACOO IN FALL The trails of the Chickacoo Lake were slowly emptying by the time we arrived there on Saturday. We met a few other hikers and their dogs and there was another horse trailer at the staging area, but the park was quiet towards the evening. The place is pure magic at this time of year. We were here with Klassique and his momma Gwen almost exactly a year ago. Kabriole handled herself exceptionally well on her first solo trip away from the farm!
