As a member of the Equestrian Canada Equine Health and Welfare Committee, Tracy was asked to put forward an equine competition matter to focus on in the upcoming year. Her topic was the issue of horse overuse in competition. She was honored to be part of the working group that addressed this important topic, resulting in a definition for overuse as of June 2025 and enforceable rules as of January 1, 2026, for Equestrian Canada competitions. Even better, the United States Equestrian Federation announced today that the same definition for horse overuse will now be used for USEF competitions.

The article we wrote two years ago is worth revisiting in light of the current wildfires in Alberta. We are pleased to report that, following our article and subsequent media coverage, Equestrian Canada's rules have been modified and no longer permit horse shows to run if the air quality index is 10 or higher.

Alberta had the worst air quality in the world last week … so why were horse shows still running in the province?
