🐾 “MY THROAT HURTS!” 🐾

Summertime with our pets is always one of the best times for experiences and memories! 🏕️

Playing outside, swimming in lakes, hiking in mountains - so many things to do and places to see! ☀️

“Chloe” was no exception - out and about, enjoying all summer has to offer! But when she came for her spay surgery this week, her owner mentioned that she had been drooling and coughing/gagging over the last little while. While sedated, Dr. Kendra performed an oral exam and found the culprit!!

An extremely red and sore throat, inflamed tonsils, and purulent discharge - all from ingesting FOXTAILS (grass awns). 🌾🌾

Foxtails are a type of grass where the tip has spikey clusters with backward facing barbs. They flourish in the summer months and when ingested, can burrow into the flesh and get lodged - leading to pain and infection. They can be found in the mouth, eyes, nose, ears or spaces between the paws.

Foxtails can be found along hiking trails, parks, meadows and open grassy fields. They are less common in urban areas, but can still be found in areas where the grass is allowed to grow uncontrolled. When the weather is warm, the foxtail dries out and “hitches a ride” on anything passing by, including our pets! 🐶

Signs to watch for in your pet include: head shaking, limping, pawing at the face, snorting, sneezing, bloody nose. In more severe cases you may see lumps, draining tracts, areas of redness, swelling, depression, decreased appetite.

In Chloe’s case, successful removal of the foxtails from her mouth was required and she was then sent home on some antibiotics and pain control.

❤️ She should be back to her regular self in no time! ❤️

There are a few ways you can avoid foxtails and keep your dog safe! Consider a hair trim for the summer to reduce the chance of attachment, avoid foxtail-prone areas, use shorter leashes when out for a walk, check for foxtails frequently after periods of outdoor play, especially after hiking.

And don’t hesitate to call the clinic if you have any questions or concerns!

🌟Updates 🌟 to CDC’s August 1st dog importation rule:

If you are bringing a dog into the US from a dog rabies-free or low-risk country, you now only need to fill out the simple CDC Dog Import Form. Other forms are no longer needed.

The requirements for dogs arriving from high-risk countries have not changed, and these dogs are still required to have additional documents.

💙🧡 IT’S GAME DAY!! 🧡💙

And “Frankie” is ready to show his support for our team by sporting his Game Day accessories! Doesn’t he look handsome in his Oilers colors? 🐾

Speaking of accessories…..

Earlier this week, Frankie was sporting something else that isn’t quite as wonderful as the potential win we are hoping for tonight! 🤣

After a fun filled trip to the lake, Frankie’s owners noticed a small area near his shoulder that looked like he had snagged himself on something. A few days later the area looked red and sore and a “lump” was forming around the thickened skin.

It turns out that what Frankie had snagged was - a TICK!

Dr. Cathy and our team removed the tick, cleaned the shoulder area, and started Frankie on some tick medication. Following our recommendation, Frankie’s owners submitted the parasite’s picture for identification through www.etick.ca

The results identified the unwanted visitor as a Black Legged Tick or Deer Tick, which can be a carrier for other diseases, so the tick has been sent off for further testing.

In the meantime, Frankie is being monitored, and plans for further treatments/diagnostics are in place if needed.

In sharing his story, Frankie wants everyone to remember:

💙 Now is the time to consider parasite prevention (both internal and external parasites) - talk to us and we can help come up with a custom plan for your pet!

🧡 Be sure to check all humans and animals thoroughly following a visit to forested or bushy areas, lakes and mountains. We have even seen tick exposure in our local area, so a quick tick check after any outdoor walk is also a good idea!

We hope handsome Frankie, along with everyone else, enjoy the game tonight! Get your Game Day garb ON and don’t forget the best “accessory” of all - your loud cheers!!

💙🧡 GO OILERS!! 🧡💙

❓How old is TOO old for an anesthetic procedure❓

🐾 The answer may not be as straight forward as you think! 🐾

Meet “Spice”! This sweet kitty came in for a dental procedure this week - at a FANTASTIC age of 20 years old!!

In this instance, with a history of hyperthyroidism and chronic kidney disease - Spice would be considered a higher anesthetic risk. However, there were signs at home that Spice was not happy. He had stopped grooming himself, and was losing weight. Given that his current medical treatment plan seemed to be managing his chronic illnesses, Dr. Kendra and her team wondered if his significant dental disease was the root of the problem. A painful mouth may be inhibiting proper nutrition and grooming, and dental disease itself can have harmful effects on the rest of the body, including the kidneys and the heart!

So - we switched from a chronic illness focus to a wellness focus and made a customized plan for Spice! Overseen by Dr. Kendra, our surgical team reviewed the patient’s lab work, consulted and prepared for anesthesia, and a dental procedure was performed including extractions.

Like all anesthetics, Spice was monitored very closely throughout the surgery and upon recovery, being mindful specifically of his age and illness related conditions.

He did GREAT!! And we are very hopeful that he will feel SO much better with a healthier mouth, rid of pain and infection. ❤️

So - how old is too old❓ The answer lies in a detailed conversation with your veterinary team, evaluation of the patient specifically, and a goal of maintaining good health and comfort for as many years to come as possible!

It is not a “one size fits all” mentality when it comes to anesthesia - and we are blessed at our clinic to have a great team who thrives on good information and good communication to help our CLIENTS with both the illness and wellness plans for their pets! 🩵

Introducing our local “doppleganger” celebrity! 🐱

Meet “Ravioli”. He is a Munchkin breed and is the absolute cutest! He first came to our clinic in the Fall as a kitten for his vaccine series, and then again for a neuter surgery this year. His owners report that he is a fun little guy at home - curious and cuddly.

Given his squishy little face, Ravioli’s owners take great care in keeping his eyes and ears clean!

They mentioned that often Ravioli will stand straight up - on his hind legs and look up at them and when he does, he looks just like a meerkat! They were kind enough to send us some photos. ❤️

Do you see the resemblance to Timon from the Lion King? 🤣 We sure did!

He was an instant favorite at the clinic - and we couldn’t help but take some photos when he was with us for his procedure. He won us all over with his sweet personality!

We are glad he has healed up so well following his stay with us, and we know he continues to be doted on at home. The other pictures sent to us from his loving humans are proof of that!

A celebrity in the making! We love you Ravioli! ❤️

Well, we’ve made it to the end of the week! Time to share our story of:

🔎 “Siggy Snow and the Case of the Sneaky Squeaker Toy” 🔍

This rambunctious little pup got herself into some trouble earlier this winter! Her owner reports that Siggy likes to chew on, and even EAT absolutely everything in sight! Rocks, toys, blankets….anything she can get her teeth into.

Until the day when she came to see our team - vomiting every 1/2 hour and not acting herself. Shaking and depressed, her owner knew something was wrong!

After 24 hours of diagnostic testing, IV fluids, x-rays, medication and observation - it was decided that an exploratory surgery was needed to determine the cause of all these drastic changes to the pup and her temperament.

And the cause? The remains of a chewed up toy, squeaker and all! The material was causing an obstruction in the gastrointestinal tract, and making our patient very sick!!

After successful removal of the culprit, and some post-surgery TLC for a while, Siggy returned to her happy-go-lucky self. Her experience didn’t slow her down for long! ☺️

How did you do with your investigative skills this week? Were you able to put all the pieces together 🧩 and figure out the case?

While we can’t say the same about the squeaker toy…we are SO glad that Siggy is happy and healthy and all in ONE PIECE!

This week, our American counterparts celebrate what they call, “Veterinary Receptionists Week” 💕

And while here in Canada we do have an “Administrative Professionals DAY” - we think that our Client Care Representatives and our Office Admin staff should be celebrated for more than just 24 hours….maybe even more than 7 days!! We celebrate them EVERY SECOND, EVERY DAY!! 🐾

Our picture is missing a few, but all of these amazing women are the FACE of our clinic. The ones who truly “see” our clients when they bring their pets to us for care. From the joy of a new puppy or kitten, to the worry of a medical issue, to the sorrow at the end of a pet’s journey. 💕 Our doctors and RVT’s give compassionate care to the pets - and our CCR’s give the very best to care for the PEOPLE.

To all our CCR and Office Administrative team - today, and every day - we SEE you! We see what you do! We see how you help! And we see how you make a difference to our team, our clinic, and to our clients and their pets!

🐾 Thank you, thank you!! 🐾

🩵”Teamwork makes the dream work!”🩵

TRUE STORY!

We want to thank you all for your support as we closed our doors for a day for our WORK RETREAT! 🐾

We had a full day of learning and making goals together!

We started with a discussion on the importance of empathy and communication, and how the ultimate currency in our industry comes from the care provided - not only for the patient, but for the whole clinic experience!

We then had a presentation on the atmosphere of a fear free visit and how we can continue to customize our care to promote the least amount of anxiety and stress for our clients and patients.

After a tasty lunch, we then took turns familiarizing each other with various products that will help our patients with extra preventative care in the areas of joint, skin, dental health, behavioural supplements, and training toys.

We rounded out the day with a CPR refresher course!

It was a busy, but eventful day full of great conversation. Part of what makes a great team is the support we can show to each other as we learn together!

Thank you for allowing us the chance to strengthen our connections to better serve YOU! 🩵

🪱 Ewwwww - pesky parasites! 🪱

Did you guess our picture from yesterday? 😂

If you thought, “Hmmm, that looks like a wormy wedding celebration”….you were right! 😉

And while our RVT Lindsay had fun making the “guests of honor” with her granddaughter out of play dough…PARASITES ARE NO PARTY!!

We talk often with our clients about parasites - both the internal and external bugs that can cause issues in our dogs and cats. A customized parasite prevention plan is formulated depending on your pets’ environment, and your lifestyle and travel plans as a family.

🕷️ While our scheduled yearly reminders on parasite control will be notifying clients in a couple of weeks - with this UNUSUALLY warm winter, it wouldn’t hurt to consider starting earlier than normal!! 🕷️

We saw a patient for a tick traveller in as late in the year 2023 as December, and have ALREADY had a couple of phone calls this week from clients noticing their dogs having worms!

Please consider your pet and their contact with other animals and humans, and call us anytime to get a jump start on parasite prevention this year!!

🐛 Let’s leave the “wormy wedding” celebrations to those ONLY made out of play dough! 🐛

🩵 Here is another example of SAFE, COMFORTABLE SOCIALIZING! 🩵

(And simply an adorable picture of one of our RVT’s grandbabies!)

While toddlers and puppies together are undeniably cute - safety for both our two legged and four legged family members should be top priority.

Here are a few tips when considering introducing young children to your pet:

1) “Make it good or make it stop.” Be sure to advocate for all parties involved! Have no set expectations and if the interaction is not going well, stop and try again another time.

2) Remember to consider these scenarios prior to the interaction: What might the kids do to scare the animal? What might the animal do to scare the kids? What behaviour might the animal learn that you don’t want to reinforce? (e.g., jumping up or pulling on the leash)

3) Be a team. Bring treats to help and have your main goal be your animal enjoying being with YOU “around the kids.” Start slow, establish boundaries, and read the body language of your pet. NEVER leave a child alone with an animal unattended.

4) Take breaks. This is important for humans and pets alike. Have a “safe space” for both animals and children where they can decompress if needed.

🐾 With some preparation and awareness, these interactions can be practically “picture perfect!” (Just like these sweet grandkids!) 🐾 And those moments when ALL your family members are bursting with love and laughter - those moments are PRICELESS. 🩵

If you have socializing questions or want more information on fear-free strategies, please contact us at the clinic!

02/08/2024

🩵 Can you guess what is happening in this video? 🩵

If you said “SOCIALIZING” - you would be right! 🐾

Really??

Yes, really!

While most of us would connect the term “socializing” with exposing your pet to another social species - there is a lot more to it than just throwing a bunch of puppies or kittens in a room together!

Providing SAFE, CONTROLLED social exposures to other animals, people and situations is the key component to helping prevent fearful behaviour. Our efforts help our pets learn how to explore their world, but at a pace that is comfortable for them. Positive, pleasant experiences where they are protected from fear-provoking conditions help develop confidence and trust - both in themselves and their owners!

Another factor to keep in mind is that some animals will “socialize” differently that others, and that is ok! For our border collie friend “Denny” in this video, for example, this is a good socializing opportunity for him! ☺️ Even if it doesn’t look like two dogs playing closely together!

Slow and steady - that is the key! And not just for our young puppies and kittens. Socializing is important at all ages!

Tune in tomorrow for another social situation example! 🩵

🩵 It’s FRIDAY! And we haven’t done a “FEEL GOOD” FEATURE STORY in a while! 🩵

So let’s start off the weekend with a smile! 🐱

The Yellowhead Veterinary Clinic recently hosted a “mini” spay/neuter morning!

3 HOURS ⏰
4 TEAM MEMBERS 🩺
6 FERAL KITTIES 🐱

All patients were safely handled and admitted for exams, surgery, microchips and vaccinations. It was a productive morning - and was able to run smoothly thanks to our amazing staff! 🩵

Our community is a great one, and we are grateful for opportunities that allow us to pay it forward when we can. Giving these animals the best chance at a healthy life is the standard of care that we strive for!

🩵 This weekend, look for small ways to pay it forward where YOU can! It really does make a difference! 🩵
