This is how much we love our horses. Jamie can’t write bios for the new website without getting emotional about how each of our horses has shaped her into the horsewoman she is today and is the reason that can do what we do to bring you into the world of horses and nature.

This is a very normal sight for most horses owners, their horse enjoying their grain. For us at Tranquil woods and for Justin this is a huge win!

When we got Justin he was severely under weight, we thought we hadn’t wintered well, we adjusted his grain ration to promote weight gain (beet pulp and rice bran added) and made sure he had 24/7 access to good quality hay. He put on a little bit of weight but not much. He was still very thin and bony throughout his whole body.

We had the vet out to power float his teeth (he is 25 years old and didn’t know when the last time his teeth were done). While the vet is out we do a blood draw. Diagnosis comes back, Justin has Cushing’s Disease. Medication is started and Justin’s appetite increases! So does his grain ration with some added oil for extra fat and hay cubes to make sure he gets enough roughage (Justin is low man in the pecking order and gets pushed out of the hay bale).

Justin doesn’t like his new oil and refuses to eat any of his grain. So not only do we have a skinny horse, we have a skinny horse who is a picky eater. Another type of oil is tried and deemed inedible.

This video shows Justin FINALLY enjoying his grain, beet pulp, hay cubes and OIL! This is a win. Justin now has coverage in his cheek bones, through his chest, top of his tail and over his ribs! We are still working, slowly, on getting his hips covered too.

As frustrating as it has been to get Justin to gain weight we will always do everything in our power to ensure the health of our horses. Our horses are our family ❤️

Working with horses can be very humbling. Stella helped to humble me today. A group of riders were tacked up and mounted when Stella told me that she did not want to go for a ride today. I tried in vain as the group waited for her to walk forward and join them. She steadfastly refused. I was forced to stop and check in with myself and sure enough I was the problem NOT Stella! I was running late this morning, I was rushing, frustrated and embarrassed that she wasn’t cooperating in front of clients. I took a deep breath, comforted her, told her that she could do this and she reluctantly agreed to follow the rest of the herd. Stella had a major milestone in her training today, she calmly carried a client through the forest without me walking on foot beside her, me riding another herd member in front of her for the first time. I almost ruined that for her by thinking I was in charge here. Truthfully all people who work with horses have to take a step back sometimes and appreciate the cooperation these large powerful animals give us on a regular basis.

🦄 Manny 🦄

Our beloved boy crossed the rainbow bridge last night. He will be greatly missed by his family and herd. He was our rock, our steady old man.

Manny was the first horse the boys ever rode and they were the last two to ride him ever. We are so grateful to be able to give Manny his last job as a trail horse and his retirement home. Manny loved his walks through the woods!

You’re the best boy Manny, Manford, Manuel, Talisman, My Old Man. You are and will forever be a part of our family ❤️

Recent studies conducted by the Institute of Heart-Math provide a clue to explain the two-way ′′healing′′ that occurs when we're close to horses.
According to researchers, the heart has an electromagnetic field larger than the brain: a magnetometer can measure the energy field of the heart that radiates from 2.4 meters to 3 meters around the human body.
While this is certainly significant, perhaps more impressive than the electromagnetic field projected by the heart of a horse is five times larger than that of a human being (imagine an electromagnetic sphere around the horse) and it can influence straight into our own heart rate.
Horses are also likely to have what science has identified as a "coherent′′ heart rate (heart rate pattern) that explains why we can feel better when we're close to them. Studies have found a coherent heart pattern or HRV to be a solid measure of well-being and consistent with emotional states of calm and joy-that is, we exhibit such patterns when we feel positive emotions.
A coherent heart pattern is indicative of a system that can recover and adapt to stressful situations very efficiently. Many times, we just need to be in the presence of horses to feel a sense of well-being and peace.
In fact, research shows that people experience many physiological benefits by interacting with horses, including lower blood pressure and heart rate, higher beta-endorphins (neurotransmitters acting as pain suppressors), decreased stress levels, decreased feelings of anger, hostility, tension and anxiety, better social working; and greater feelings of empowerment, confidence, patience and self-efficacy.
