As the school year comes to a close and kids are home more, remember that they can now take on some new roles to the family pet. Maybe feeding or walking can be a daily activity. Playing ball, swimming, fishing etc. keep in mind it is also a good time to brush up on some basic training. Sit, stay, leave it, come, lose leash walking etc. Have kids build trust and love with the dog not that they have more time to spend with them. Summer is always a good chance to brush up on some training that may have gone a bit lax over the last few months. Enjoy the extra time with you dog!

With the hot weather upon us I like to fill up the "Dog pool". It keeps them cool and hydrated! Dogs don't have to submerge their body in water to cool off, they don't sweat :) Putting their paws in cool water will do the trick. If you don't have a water lover, like I do, try an old towel soaked with the hose, your dog may walk on it or even lay on it to cool down

This gentle leader is the ONLY thing I will walk my dogs with. It gives my full control over my dog and I can walk all of them at the same time with this on! It doesn't choke, or pull on their necks. I also like it because harnesses have never worked for my dogs. Harnesses let my dogs pull from their chest with more strength! I bought mine from my local global pets. Happy walking.

Dog Training Tip of the week:
Sit is a dogs way of saying "please" and the most basic of commands. This is often the first trick or command they master as puppies. This is an easy one to teach because when the mom dog is weaning the puppies she will stop laying down for them to nurse. They are usually around 5 weeks old when this starts and the pupies are up and waddling around by then. In order for them to reach her milk they have to sit and place their front paws on her to reach. When they "sit" the reward is their mothers milk. If they don't get into the sit position, they can't get the milk :) A good tip to remember when teaching your puppy or dog a new command (or practicing an old command or trick) is to only ever ASK ONCE. If you ask your dog numerous times to "sit", "come" "stay" etc it quickly learns it doesn't have to perform the command the first time you ask. Ask once, reward.

Lets talk about..... P**P!
Dogs respond to the heat a few different ways. They don't sweat like us, they pant to cool their body. They can be cooled off by cool water on their paws, or swimming. But, they also sometimes will p**p to release heat. its not uncommon for our dogs to have loose, untypical p**p while we are camping and in the heat all day. It's only a concern if they are not eating and drinking and it lasts longer than 2days. (IMO). Just something to think about :)

Some great water toys for dogs include Kong on a rope, plastic or rubber bones that float, floating frisbee discs etc.
Remember to always play safe in the water with your dog. Use a dog life jacket on a boat or anytime your dogs is unfamiliar with the water. Have a spashing time!

So, I had a call last week from an individual asking about surrendering their dog. Sadly, I couldn't offer any real resolution for this person. I recommended that they contact the breeder first, because all good and responsible breeders will ALWAYS take back and help rehome a dog they have put into this world. We understand that life can change suddenly. Illness, a big job opportunity, relocation, divorce etc. Please, please think long and hard before adding a dog or puppy to your family! Be realistic. Research the breed, find the right fit for your family and your life. Dogs are a commitment of 9-15years! Be real, Be responsible, and enjoy the fun and joy a dog will bring you everyday. BUT, if things change, please do the right thing and rehome that dog. reach out to the breeder first. Any person who has had the pleasure of loving and living life with a dog, will agree that rehoming it is sometimes the best thing for the dog. So the dog can live its best dog life. Please don't keep a dog that you will resent. A dogs primary (and only job in my house) is to enrich our lives and bring us joy everyday. Make us laugh, keep us active, reduce stress and love us unconditionally, No strings attached :) I hope that family finds the right family and that dog can live out the rest of its life happy and healthy.
