"We just completed Level 1 Obedience with our 6-month-old Lab and our 6-year-old Potcake (who is very anxious and a bit reactive to dogs and kids). Our initial assessment with Brett was an hour and a half, and we learned a TON, just from that.

The 7-week class was organized, fun, and effective. Both dogs walk beautifully on their leash now, are much more responsive in the house, and we have the tools we need to carry on with their daily training. At first, I was worried the class was too simple, but soon realized we needed to really understand and master the basics, and am beyond happy with the results.

WELL WORTH the investment to have a calmer home, happier pups, and MUCH more enjoyable walks. Will go back for Level II in the Spring! Brett knows his stuff and is kind, patient, and supportive, and I am pretty sure our dogs like him better than us.

We also board and do weekly daycare with Boss Co, and the dogs just love it, coming home happy and exhausted. Very safe, well-run facility with an expert—not just teen girls who really don't know how to manage a pack."- Gillian Rees

Behaviour Training Tip #6 - 🌍 Socialization is Key to a Well-Rounded Pup! 🐾

At Boss Co Dog Training, we can’t stress enough how important socialization is for your dog’s behaviour and overall happiness. Exposing your dog to a variety of environments, people, and other dogs in a controlled, positive way helps them develop confidence and reduces anxiety or aggression. 🐕‍🦺

🎯 Tip of the Day:

Introduce your dog to new situations gradually—whether it’s meeting new people, visiting busy places, or interacting with other dogs. Start in calm, controlled settings and increase the level of stimulation as your dog becomes more comfortable. This slow, steady exposure will help them adapt and thrive in different environments.

🗝️ Why Socialization Works:

Dogs that are well-socialized are more confident, less anxious, and less likely to exhibit aggressive behaviours. Socialization teaches them how to behave appropriately in a variety of situations, making them more adaptable and better behaved at home, in public, or around other dogs.

✅ Boss Dawg Tip:

Make sure each new experience is positive! Use treats, praise, and encouragement during these introductions to help your dog form happy associations. Keep the sessions short and enjoyable, and always follow your dog’s comfort level to avoid overwhelming them.

Behaviour Training Tip #5 - 🛑 Set Boundaries, Create Better Behaviours! 🐾

At Boss Dawg Lodge, we believe that setting clear boundaries is a crucial part of training your dog to be happy, confident, and well-behaved. 🐶 Boundaries help your dog understand what’s acceptable and what’s not, and with the right approach, you can teach them exactly what you expect from them.

🎯 Tip of the Day:

When your dog does something you don’t want—like jumping on guests or grabbing food off the table—use firm but calm commands like “leave it” or “no” to correct the behaviour. Immediately follow this with a redirection to an acceptable behaviour, like sitting or playing with a toy, so they learn what’s expected instead.

🗝️ Why Boundaries Matter:

Dogs need clear, consistent boundaries to understand how to behave in different situations. Without boundaries, they might repeat unwanted behaviours because they don’t know what’s off-limits. By pairing correction with redirection, you’re showing them what behaviour you want instead of just telling them what not to do.

✅ Boss Dawg Tip:

Make sure to reward your dog when they follow the redirection! If they stop jumping and sit down when asked, give them a treat or praise to reinforce the positive behaviour. This creates a positive cycle where your dog learns that good behaviour leads to rewards!

🐾 Meet Gibbs! 🐾 When Gibbs first came to us, he was very fearful toward new people, showing signs of fear aggression—tense body, dilated pupils, rigid tail forward, and excessive foaming at the mouth. He was in a constant state of anxiety, and even Brett couldn’t approach him without extreme caution. Fast forward 1 week of prep by his owners and 12 days in our Board & Train program, where we focused on human desensitization, sensory socialization, and confidence-building nose work. After going home, his family kept up the great work with long walks and exposure training, helping Gibbs continue his progress. This weekend, he was back for a boarding stay, and we’re so happy to report that he’s a changed dog—happy, playful, and coping much better, with a wagging tail! 🐕✨ His family has seen huge improvements at home too. ⭐️Remember, there’s no quick fix when it comes to behavioral training. Don’t give up hope! Trust the process, stay consistent, and results will come. 💪🐾 We’re so proud of you, Gibbs! 🙌 Keep up the great work!
