This ❤️....
Lately I have seen a huge shift in my life. This isn’t a complaint or a pity post. This is simply a fact. This business has changed me. Not for worse or better, it just has.
I found this post and it completely summed it up. When I first read it, I thought, it’s a cop out. An excuse. But in the New Year, I am going to try to focus on the fact that this isn’t going to be forever (a line my husband often repeats to me). For now, it’s work, a lot of work. It’s mental fatigue and 8000 decisions a day. It’s mistakes. It’s loving a staff so much and knowing their lives depend on the businesses success. It’s taking time off and being riddled with guilt or financial stresses. It’s booking a trip to see friends and then realizing you have become an unorganized last minute mess of a human. It’s texting family and friends late at night to dump you worries and fears. It’s paying bills later than you would have before. It’s watching money come in and go out just as fast. It’s falling asleep before you text that person back. It’s soaking up every cuddle when you get home before the next 16 hour day. For me, it’s also seeing a beautiful community each and every day. It’s waking up at 3 am on your day off excited to plan kids programming. It’s having my oldest tell me he is proud of what we have built and seeing him behind the cash. It’s having a staff that texts and says “I can pick that up”. It’s working with other small businesses that inspire you. It’s watching my kids play restaurant at home. It’s so hard. But so are so many other beautiful things (parenthood anyone?!)
So all this to say I guess I am who I am because I own a business. I will continue to survive each day because I am doing what I love with the people I love right beside me and on the home front!
But please, read these words and think about other small business owners in your life. We are here, just navigating it all and giving whatever we have left to our families at the end of the day.
We are small business owners. We don’t have people dedicated to answering messages or taking that last minute order or making every single donation that is requested. We are going to damn well try our best though!
