We are in the middle of our first heat event of the summer. Heat stroke can develop quickly, so ensure your pets have access to plenty of shade and water. Dogs that are overweight, brachycephalic (short nosed), dark coated, long haired and those that are young, are at higher risk of developing heat stroke. Symptoms include lethargy, heavy panting, bright red gums, excessive salivation, vomiting/diarrhea and collapse. If you suspect your pet is experiencing heat stroke, move them to a cool area and seek veterinary care immediately. (photo courtesy of )

TICK REMOVAL

There is misinformation being shared on social media regarding tick removal. Many of these posts are recommending the use of products such as soap, petroleum jelly and essential oils, which they claim make the tick detach.

These methods are not recommended by experts. Ticks carry diseases that are salivated into the body when they feed. We do not want to agitate the tick in any way that is going to make it salivate more, and thereby be more likely to transmit disease. The goal is to remove the tick as quickly as possible, not wait for it to detach.

The best way to remove a tick is to take tweezers and grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible, with steady pressure pull straight upwards. Try to grasp it firmly but gently, as to not crush the tick. Tick twisters can also be used if available. Once removed, wash the area thoroughly with soap and water. The tick can be saved in a sealed container in the freezer for identification.

Public health has released their Lyme disease risk map for 2025. The areas highlighted in yellow are areas where they have determined blacklegged ticks, that carry Lyme disease, are established. Tick populations continue to grow every year. Please take precautions to protect yourselves and your pets.
