Our AVAS turns 🌟 8️⃣ 🌟 years old today! Wow, how the time flies…..I will never forget the day offered this male to us and Petra showed me him run in the field, such intensity, style and character - I knew he would come home with me as he was exactly what I was looking for to improve the breed in North America 💗

He accomplished many things while with me in Canada 🇨🇦, as an active hunting dog but most notably producing 2 spectacular litters for my kennel, each producing exceptionally talented and healthy dogs and each receiving NA breeders awards with 13 out of 14 pups tested! They have all grown into wonderful representations of the breed with quite a few having contributed through breeding to more generations of health and talent. I kept my own Avar and Boróka from him and am very grateful to keep his line going here in Canada.

Avas returned to Hungary in 2024 to live with my very good friend where he will be worked in competitions as a veteran and where he can live his life on her organic farm hunting rats and enjoying farm life. He is still available at stud there and we hope to see many more baby Avas’ bless the HWV world on the near future!

Officially we have a new Canadian Show Champion in the Pannonia house.
Sajó 💦’Firmstone’s Karak’ is now 🇨🇦CH as well as Romanian 🇷🇴 CH - completely owner handled in Canada (with the help of some great Vizsla friends!) He still has some maturing to do and it’s my guess in the coming years he will really impress in the show ring. In the meantime he loves his birds, hunting and working - a lot of dog yet a true joy when he’s not being a complete goofball 😅. We’re excited to see what comes of our plans for breeding him this next year.

Bird hunting season has arrived in BC 🇨🇦!
After returning from the NAVHDA International Invitational in Iowa, we spent a week in the woods and mountains chasing blue grouse and ruffed grouse successfully.
From 5 months to 11 years old, each dog had time with birds doing what they were bred for. My heart is full to have such experiences with my dogs and great friends in Steve and Holly .
Really looking forward to in a couple weeks!

VIZSLA CANADA NATIONALS 2024

Since the Wirehair Vizsla Club of America just had their inaugural National Specialty show, reminded me to report on our own National Specialty show held by Vizsla Canada in Victoria, BC 🇨🇦 this past July.
There was a record 9 HWV entered, the most ever entered for our breed (to my knowledge) in the CKC breed club. The real testament to breed enthusiasts and friendships that have formed over the years in the west coast is that we all enter to help support each of us to gain our championships. At this weekend alone Gayle and her Ilka gained GCH, winning Breed each day, Vikki and her Rose finished her CH, our own Boróka went select in the specialty to gain more points toward her GCH and our young dogs received the following:

SAJÓ 💦 Can CH Ro CH Firmstone’s Karak VMV AV NAVHDA NA 2 went BOS and Best Field Dog at the specialty, in addition to his BOS and BOW wins at the regular shows - this finishes off his CKC show championship (all owner handled to boot!)

CSENGE 🕊️ Auburn Acres Sunvar’s Unicum at Pannonia NAVHDA NA 2 (daughter of our Pannonia Avar) went Best Puppy in Specialty and Reserve Winner Bitch.
Most importantly she had a fun first time in the ring and really showed like a breeze under the competent hands of our friend and fellow HWV enthusiast Mike Wald of Vizslas.

CEDAR 🪵 Pannonia Cedrus went BOW, Best Canadian Bred at the specialty and BOW / BOS in the regular shows for a few more points towards his CH.

Many thanks to for all she does for the club, the judges who saw the greatness in my lines of dogs and to my competitors and friends Gayle and Larry Nelson, Vikki Hill and my family on Vancouver Island who are old time hunters but still enter the ring to support the club and showcase the breed as a talented versatile hunting dog that can also win in the ring. A true testament to form following function.

1️⃣1️⃣ the eldest of our Pannonia pack’s birthday on August 7th - how the years flew by and so much accomplished! Notably the first Versatile Champion for the breed and multiple European work titles including ResCACIT, yet the most cherished skill of this dog is his ability to be a grouse hunter extraordinaire.
He spent the day swimming and strolling our new 30 acre home complete with quail and Hungarian partridge- what bird dog could ask for more?!?
Love this boy to the moon and back! May we have many more hunts in the forest and fields together in the coming years, my Big Red, The King, our beardless wonder and Secretariat of the bird dog world. You hooked me in this bird dog world and the and I’m grateful each day I get to have you in my world!

One of our goals on our Hungarian trip was to hunt test the dogs in the Hungarian Field and Water spring test, the VMV.
This test combines many retrieving tasks in field and water, proofs gun sensitivity in the field and water, works on blind field and water retrieves as well as pointing and searching. Many objectives similar to the UPT test and some even more difficult tasks. Other tasks are only available in the German VHD testing system in North America.

We trained hard the week before, all aspects of the test every day for 4 days and our hard work paid off as both dogs received Prize 1’s for their work!
Pannonia Boróka missed a max score by just 4 points for a Prize 1 280/284
Firmstone’s Karak impressed as a young dog at just 17 months completing this rigorous test and also received a Prize 1 263/284! He got to meet the breeder of his mother (Eszter Hazi Drotos Kotta), it was wonderful to share thoughts and insight into the breed with Eszter and have her judge this dog with her lines behind him.

We couldn’t be happier with our results in show in Europe and now even more satisfaction to have this hunt test behind our dogs - Looking forward to the coming hunting season!

The 3rd pup from our C litter to complete the Natural Ability Test added another Prize 1 with max scores to the Pannonia House!

After testing Saturday and heading towards a Prize 1, Cedar decided it wasn’t the day to point birds but rather just retrieve them…..therefore he did not pass with a zero in pointing.
We did a quick training session that evening to remind him of the rules and today he pulled out all the stops and received his Prize One 🥇that we knew he was capable of.
Cedar lives with my family on Vancouver Island and was trained by them as newbies to NA testing - we’re very proud of them both. This is what we breed for!

Our final show in Hungary was a successful one:

Pannonia Boróka went ResCACIB AND CAC 2nd/5. The judge quite liked her and it was nice to have appreciation for our breeding at the end of our time in Hungary.

Firmstone’s Karak ‘Sajó’ received CAC for his class. He moved beautifully in the ring, the judge said he just needs some more filling in to do. Next year will be the Yankee boy’s year!

Testing season has started for the Pannonia C litter pups, and it’s off to a bang💥 ! We have the second pup to test successfully:
Pannonia Cinke “Paprika” tested her NA with the Texas Chapter of today to a max score of 112, Prize 1 🏆🥇.
Thank you (and ) for investing in training, testing and giving Paprika the best bird dog life (and picking exceptional Hungarian names for your Pannonia pups!) We at the Pannonia house are grateful and very proud of your accomplishment! It’s gonna be a great hunting season with her this year 😎

Our Sajó (Firmstone’s Karak) successfully ran his first Hungarian 🇭🇺hunt test - the Basic Exam AV (Alapvizsga) with MAX scores and Excellent rating!

This test is a similar to the NAVHDA NA test in that it has field search and pointing but the other parts are quite a bit more including many retrieve exams:

Land:
- marked retrieve of duck and rabbit
- Drag of one game (duck or rabbit)

Water:
- marked retrieve of duck
- marked retrieve of duck with gunfire

The judges were especially complimentary of his field search, sweeping the field with high nose, as a true Magyar Vizsla should. Nice moment for us having come so far to be here.
