Another stellar year for Okanagan farmers 😖
The cherries on Sukhdeep Brar's 100-acre orchard in Summerland, B.C., are just a few weeks out from ripening. But if he doesn't manage to find the workers to pick them, they will spoil.

Another disaster year for us 😔
A second straight year of record losses looms for BC cherry growers as the 2020 harvest begins. BC’s Production Insurance program has received 296 claims for yield loss out of 425 polices. “Based on early damage estimates, we anticipate cherry yield loss claims likely to be in the region of $12 million,” the BC Ministry of Agriculture told Country Life in BC. This follows industry-wide losses of $10 million in 2019. This year’s losses are the result of severe cold in January, frost in April as well as heavy rain and hail in June that resulted in 50% damage to early varieties. All told, the 2020 cherry crop is expected to be less than 60% of normal. The shortfall means less exported fruit and a greater focus on domestic markets for packers. This is great news. As a grower severely impacted by SAD im looking forward to some possible answers.
Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada scientists have $730,000 in funding over three years to formally investigate Sudden Apple Decline (SAD), according to a story in the August edition of Country Life in BC. Last year, growers across the Okanagan began seeing productive apple trees die within a few weeks of showing signs of stress, destroying up to 40% of some blocks. Scientists from the Summerland Research and Development Centre will be collaborating with other institutions and provide a report to growers early next year. The story is in the August edition of Country Life in BC, the agricultural news source for BC's farmers and ranchers.
