Really like this picture, full mouthed horse well on his way to the bridle. Still in “the two reins” but also romel reins on the bridle is a big clue to his age. The mecate reins and the loop that drops down near the stirrup will soon be replaced by a “get down rope“ (I don’t know the Spanish term) but the bosalito might adorn his nose for a few more years. Ian Tyson sang about this Vaquero art, Jaquima to Freno.

Self-actualization, in Maslow's hierarchy of needs, is the highest level of psychological development, where personal potential is fully realized.. So why horses? Why, after even the simplest of tasks, do horses make us feel like we have conquered our deepest fears? Because our horse has? Horses share the podium with every member of their family, be it the jockey for 2 minutes or the groom for 2 years. RIP New York Thunder.

3 year old filly phenom Nannie Bernice in her last outing under the lights. The “little girl” will play with the big boys again tomorrow night in the finale at Summerside. Stay tuned for the morning line!

For cart drivers, core strength is important and helps maintain the required sitting postures (often over prolonged periods) and also helps to reduce the occurrence of back discomfort and muscular restrictions through the pectorals and psoas of the hip. Drivers having the postural strength to remain balanced and correct the forces that take you outside of your centre of gravity, will benefit your own performance but also benefit your horse’s ability to achieve symmetry and remain stable when travelling at speed and negotiating obstacles. For the drivers, limb strength is needed. A coach could work with you to establish some exercises that will assist with the strengthening of the relevant muscles and could include squatting on an unstable base such as a wobble cushion or using bands for resistance work.

3 year old filly phenom, ‘Nannie Bernice’ set her lifetime record of 1:55 3/5 during Summerside Raceway’s Plate Week. Today her adopted home town saw an impressive victory. We get to Relax, Attune, Connect and Enrich four times a week in the jog cart. To say she plays hard is an understatement, thank you Janice Hubbard!

Horse trainer D. Wayne Lukas is 87 years old. Today his 2 year old ‘Seize the Grey’ upset the field of future Kentucky Derby hopefuls. In his last race, he was beaten by a very convincing 16 lengths! Horses give us hope, they get us up in the morning to meet the challenges of a new day. They inspire us to be better. They reward us greatly, not with an unearned gift, but with a sense of self worth. We don’t R.A.C.E. to win, because we win every morning.

Life long horsemen Gordie Grady and Art Rogers were honoured by the Prince County Horsemen’s Club for their immense contributions to the harness racing community. The Unity cart was used to carry the honorary parade marshals for a lap around Summerside Raceway. Congratulations!
