Thank you Alberta Equestrian Federation
With recent reports of highly contagious equine illnesses in Alberta, it’s a good time to tighten up barnyard defences.
Our horses depend on us to keep them safe, and a few simple biosecurity habits can go a long way in preventing the spread of harmful bacteria and viruses:
✔️Limit horse-to-horse contact when travelling or attending events.
✔️Wash hands, boots, and equipment before and after handling different horses.
✔️Don’t share buckets, grooming tools, or tack between horses.
✔️ Isolate new or returning horses for a short period before mixing them with the herd.
✔️ Monitor temperatures and watch for symptoms so you can spot trouble early.
✔️ Clean and disinfect trailers after every trip.
A bit of care today helps ensure our horses stay healthy, happy, and ready for the activities we all love. Alberta’s equine community is strong, and with thoughtful steps, we can keep it that way.
If you ever have concerns about your horse’s health, connect with your veterinarian—they're as essential as a good farrier and a trustworthy lead rope.
