Alberta's Management plan allows for male and female harvest on a quota system. Quotas are set by aging cats that are harvested. It is always a 50-50 topic between Houndsman, Half is all about being able to run and harvesting of the mature toms letting the females raise their kittens. The other half see cougars as being better off harvested right out of an area believing that doing so will save the ungulate population. In a way they are not wrong, but cougars are not the Only predators that are hard on our deer, elk,and moose populations. So Allowing younger cats go and harvesting older mature animals will in the long run increase quotas, and will make all hound hunters more happy because not only will more people have the ability to harvest a mature cat but houndsmen Will be able to run dogs longer! It's not just hunting… it's conservation for the future also, Happy trails out there!
