Forever Bored Acres, got bored and as we often do came up with a new idea, Chickens. After a year of himming and hawing, we were very proud of our restraint and research and jumped in. With 4 beautiful birds black barred and easter eggers. Then we shopped around and paid some premium $$ for some real beauties, Silkie, Ameraucana, and still do not know what Fierro is but that Lady earns her keep. Impatience forced us to nab up a couple older Lady Hens as we wanted eggs now not in 6 months, come on, really? Those Ladies gave us some real beauty green eggs and still do 6of7 days of the week. They are superstars. Everything went so well and smooth we got bored again and as we learned more and more about our chickens we learned more about how commercial chickens are raised. We really do understand that commercial chickens do have there place, but not everyone actually has to do this. We have the space, ability and resources so decided to grow our own. To do this we will sell our extra eggs, live chicks and chickens that are not suited for our specific meat or egg laying purposes to others to assist in the cost of feed. This will allow us to raise chickens who get to live a happy life, graze on our acreage and if we are doing it right get Bored too. We have had such an easy first year, year two was a shocker with a few stumbles. But still loving it and the work it has created. Forever Bored Acres has allowed us to enjoy our lovely birds, chicks, eat as many eggs as we want, get much more active, earn just a bit of income to offset our feed costs, and if all goes well we will be producing our own meat this year.
And then we got Bored again, and decided milk would be nice. Sams herd of goats is so beautiful. He worked very hard to pick each one individually and they really are our loves. So sweet, gentle, cuddly and the milk is incredible. As milk cannot be sold the milk is all ours for drinking, cheese, yogurts, ice cream and so much more. SO enjoying this. Also to offset costs we plan to sell our Purebred Registered Nigerian goaty goats kids to other goat lovers and hobby farmers who need some special love too. Coming next year. This year its all the love just for us.
So many unexpected benefits have come from our animals. The yard clean up is amazing! I have never seen the brush cleared under our trees before. Fresh eggs and milk are fantastic. Learning to compost for my garden, making so many new friends and meeting some great people who are also got Bored or have been doing this for years. So many great mentors and we found the Loop program. I am super excited to learn more and feed my family of animals while stopping such a large amount of food waste.
