FYI Monday - Fun Fact - The original budgies were greeny-yellow in colour, and from this, other colours developed. The second colour was all-yellow, which was bred from a genetic mutation. The first blue budgie wasn’t seen until 1878!

FYI Monday - The difference between an Australian Budgie & an English Budgie

The regular budgie originates from Australia. It is quite small in size but very loud and vocal in the home. In contrast, the English budgie,or show/exhibition budgie, is much larger and doesn't vocalize as often or as loudly. Aside from these factors, they are similar in every other aspect.

FYI Monday - Breeder Beware

Baby birds are adorable and I dont regret becoming a breeder. Have you been considering breeding? Here are some of the other things to consider;
Are you prepared? The hen can become egg bound, meaning the egg becomes stuck in her. You will need avian vet assistance should this happen. A laying hen requires extra nutrition to help avoid this.
Is there an appropriate nesting space available to the hen? A nest box laid with dry oats is usually best.
Sometimes the mother/father reject the babies, even killing them. Are you prepared to raise the babies yourself? This requires an incubator, and special bird formula for feedings (which can be as often as every 2 hours).
Do you know how much to feed? How to feed? What formula to use? When to start weaning?
Please do a lot of research before deciding to breed your budgies. A lot can happen and its best to be prepared for it all.

FYI MONDAY - Male or Female

Males have a fully pink cere that turns a deep blue, as the top 2 rows show.

Females have a pale blue or white cere that turns a brownish color when they're older. Just like the bottom 2 rows show.

FYI Monday - Whats all this "chop" talk?

Chop for budgies is just a salad, or mash, of veggies, fruits, legumes, grains and seeds all mixed together. You can add some sprouts or eggs, blend it up, and feed to your budgies as a meal.
Some different seeds that are budgie safe are; flax, h**p, chia, millet, poppy, pumpkin and sesame.
You can purchase chop but its much more fun to make it yourself. Have fun with it!!

FYI MONDAY - Can I use branches as perches??

Yes, you can, BUT.... they need to be a "budgie-safe" wood and need to be cured of all bugs and disease first. First, make sure your chosen tree hasnt been treated with any pesticides. The branch should be placed in an oven at 200 for 2 hours. Then debarked and sanded. A list of safe wood;

Keep bird's feet strong and agile by providing different sizes and types of perches in their cage. This simulates a budgie's natural environment!

FYI Monday - Activities

In the wild, budgies spend all day foraging. They are experts at chewing, digging and climbing. In captivity we need to provide these guys with entertainment so they dont get bored. Get creative with thier toys (make your own), rearrange your budgies cage, add new toys every so often. Its so good for your budgies health to have new things to do.

FYI MONDAY - Dandelion Season

My budgies love Dandelions! Leaves, flowers and roots are all edible. Just be sure to pick from a spot that hasnt been chemically sprayed, or near a roadside where traffic has contaminated them.
