When a pet develops a complex, chronic, or severe health condition that goes beyond routine veterinary care, they may need the expertise of a board-certified veterinary internal medicine specialist.

At Boundary Bay Veterinary Specialty Hospital (BBVSH), our internal medicine specialists play a crucial role in diagnosing and managing some of the most serious medical conditions affecting pets.

Unlike general practice veterinarians who provide routine checkups, vaccinations, and preventive care, veterinary internists specialize in diagnosing and treating complex illnesses, including diseases affecting the kidneys, liver, gastrointestinal system, endocrine system, and immune system.

๐Ÿšจ Pet Poison Awareness Month Household Hazards | Pt. 5 ๐Ÿšจ

Ethylene glycol, commonly found in antifreeze and de-icing products, is highly toxic to pets. Pets may be attracted to the sweet taste of antifreeze, but even a small amount can cause kidney failure.

Symptoms of ethylene glycol poisoning may include:
๐Ÿพ Lethargy
๐Ÿพ Vomiting
๐Ÿพ Incoordination
๐Ÿพ Increased thirst and urination

Without treatment, symptoms progress to kidney failure and can be fatal.

Cats and dogs have distinct dietary needs that must be met for optimal health.

While they both belong to the Carnivora order, dogs are omnivores, meaning they can digest both plant- and animal-based foods, whereas cats are obligate carnivores, requiring nutrients only found in animal products.

Key differences in nutritional requirements between cats and dogs can include:

๐Ÿพ Protein
๐Ÿพ Taurine
๐Ÿพ Vitamin A & B3 (Niacin)
๐Ÿพ Fatty Acids

Content Warning: Dog Accident/Injury

For most dog owners, a casual hike is a time for exploration and bonding.

But for Molly Bare and her beloved four-year-old dog Jag, what started as an adventurous day turned into a life-threatening ordeal.

On April 13, 2024, Jag fell over a frozen waterfall, plummeting almost 10 metres (35 feet) onto the ice-covered rocks below.

When he arrived at Boundary Bay, Jag was assessed by Dr. Peter Gordon, board-certified neurologist and neurosurgeon, who performed the intricate surgery that allowed Jag to be able to walk again.

Find the full story of Jag's operation and remarkable recovery on our blog: https://bbvsh.com/blog/jags-remarkable-recovery-a-dogs-survival-after-a-frozen-waterfall-fall/

Hey fur parents, let's talk protein!

While cats and dogs may get theirs differently, and in differently measured amounts per serving, protein is a vital nutrient that supports the growth and repair of their muscles, skin, hair, and internal organs.

Pets, especially young, growing animals and pregnant females, require an adequate intake of high-quality proteins to maintain a healthy body condition.

Signs of protein deficiency can include:
๐Ÿพ Muscle loss
๐Ÿพ Lethargy and weakness
๐Ÿพ Poor coat quality

๐Ÿšจ Pet Poison Awareness Month Household Hazards | Pt. 4 ๐Ÿšจ

Some everyday foods that are dangerous to pets include:

๐Ÿพ Chocolate โ€“ Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, rapid breathing, and even seizures or death in pets.

๐Ÿพ Xylitol โ€“ a sugar substitute commonly found in sugar-free gum and some peanut butter brands, Xylitol can cause a rapid release of insulin in pets, leading to low blood sugar and and liver damage.

๐Ÿพ Grapes and Raisins โ€“ Grapes and raisins can lead to kidney failure in dogs, causing symptoms like vomiting, lethargy, and loss of appetite.

๐Ÿพ Macadamia Nuts โ€“ Macadamia nuts can cause muscle tremors, weakness, vomiting, and hyperthermia (overheating) in dogs.

๐Ÿพ Onions & Garlic โ€“ Can cause anemia, weakness, pale gums, and organ damage.

๐Ÿพ Cheese - An occasional treat of cheese is acceptable, but some types, such as blue cheese, can produce toxins that cause rapid onset convulsions in dogs.

๐Ÿพ Alcohol - Alcohol can lead to alcohol poisoning in pets, resulting in symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, coordination problems, and, in severe cases, respiratory failure.

Just like humans, poor nutrition in pets can lead to serious health issues. Nutritional deficiencies or imbalances can contribute to conditions such as skin disorders, digestive problems, weak immune function, and organ dysfunction.

A high-quality pet food should provide complete and balanced nutrition, eliminating the need for additional supplements, excessive treats, or human food.

๐Ÿšจ Pet Poison Awareness Month Household Hazards | Pt. 3 ๐Ÿšจ

According to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center AnTox database, ma*****na, amphetamines, co***ne, he**in, and hallucinogenic mushrooms are five of the most common drugs companion animals and working police dogs are exposed to. Pets can be exposed to these dangerous substances, either by ingesting them directly or through secondhand exposure.

Many cases involve pets ingesting ma*****na-laced baked goods. In these cases, there may be additional toxic ingredients involvedโ€”such as chocolate, raisins, or xylitolโ€”which result in a poorer prognosis.

The most common clinical signs of drug exposure in animals are:
๐Ÿพ Ataxia or incoordination
๐Ÿพ Lethargy or depression
๐Ÿพ Vomiting
๐Ÿพ Urinary incontinence
๐Ÿพ Increased sensitivity to motion or sound
๐Ÿพ Head bobbing
๐Ÿพ Dilated pupils
๐Ÿพ Increased salivation
๐Ÿพ Slower than normal heart rate

Good nutrition is one of the most important factors in ensuring your pet lives a long, healthy, and happy life.

A properly balanced diet provides essential nutrients that support organ function, boost the immune system, and help prevent chronic diseases such as obesity, heart disease, kidney disease, and even certain types of cancer.

At Boundary Bay Veterinary Specialty Hospital, we see pets when they need specialty care due to issues often caused by chronic disease.

We know more than most the significance of nutrition in the prevention of these diseases, and therefore in preventing a costly trip to the hospital.

Yay! A bravery award for Miss Koko Bragg!

KoKo came into the ER after falling on her neck and back, and was in quite a bit of pain when she arrived.

KoKo was admitted for 24 hours and we performed neck radiographs. By morning she was feeling better, and with some pain meds was ready to go home and fully recover with her family!

Content Warning: Signs of Cat Abuse

Meet Tomball! ๐Ÿˆ

Tomball was brought to BBVSH by Tiny Kittens to receive medical care after living among a feral cat colony.

Unlike many of his furry colony friends, this brave little guy needed much more specialized treatment than initially thought after being examined on arrival at BBVSH by our diagnostic imaging specialists.

Tomball's care soon became a collaborative effort between our Dr. Rochette (board-certified dentist) and Dr. Alvarez (board-certified surgeon).

Watch our video for Tomball's full story with photos and videos courtesy of Tiny Kittens.
