As the temperature rises owners of fur bearing breeds begin to realize their pets are hot. Mistakenly, many think that clipping these breeds down will help them be cooler. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
This time of year it's common to see these breeds 'blowing coat', meaning that massive amounts of undercoat are shed out at once. However, clipping is not the answer. Instead your professional groomer can remove that crazy amount of undercoat and help keep it in check year round.
This allows the coat to properly perform it's job of keeping the body cooler. The attached undercoat works like insulation keeping cooler air near the body while the guard coat reflects heat away. But when loose undercoat is not properly removed it impedes the coat from doing it's task.
Professional groomers provide so much more than a haircut. Talk to your groomer about booking an appointment for your fur bearing breed to keep them comfortable year round!

DON’T FORCE ME TO BE SOCIAL!
Do we like everyone we meet? Do we all enjoy socialising and spending time with lots of different people? I certainly don’t and refer to myself as a “caninetrovert” – a person that much prefers to spend time with dogs rather than people. Maybe I’m a little different to the “norm”, but be that as it may, we are all individuals with different personality styles and social preferences.

Some of us are extroverts, gaining energy from interacting with people; some of us introverts, who find people draining and need alone time to recharge our social batteries and some of us are somewhere in between.

If we acknowledge that we are all different in this way, we also need to acknowledge and accept that our dogs are similar.

They could be overly affectionate or fiercely independent, approachable or nervous, energetic or laid back, confident or cautious, sociable, tolerant, selective or reactive.

We may be really disappointed when our dogs turn out not to be the socialite we expected them to be.

Some may even see this as a behaviour problem that needs to be “fixed”. Sometimes it can be improved, especially if the cause is from a negative experience, but genetics, breed tendencies, individual personalities, health and age all contribute to tolerance levels and sociability.

Accept your dog for who they are, allow them to choose whether they want to be sociable or not, respect their choices and never force an interaction that your dog is not comfortable with.

With all the requests about shaving a double coated dog as the weather warms up. I feel the need to put some education out there.

• It will NOT keep them cooler in the summer
• It can permanently damage their coat to the point of growing back in patchy
• It increases the risk of sunburn and skin cancer
•It will not decrease their shedding but in fact cause more shedding just finer hair
• It does not help with allergies
• it causes the dog to have to work extra hard to stay cool on hot days or warm on cool days.
• It causes the fur to Matt easier and dog becoming agitated which can cause chewing at self and then creating sores as well as creating more brush time for you the owner.
• it will take away their protection from insect bits and debris on the skin
• the hair that sheds ( the undercoat ) grows back in faster then the top coat taking away waterproof layer and sun protection.

Double coats are meant to have that coat so please reconsider shaving your double coated breeds as it’s not helping them at all.

Example of double coated breeds are

Pomeranian, Newfoundland, golden retrievers, labs, Huskey, heelers
