Surrey, BC –The Surrey Animal Resource Centre (SARC) is seeing a reduction in adoptions while the number of animals coming into the shelter increases to the pre-pandemic levels. The number of animals leaving is not keeping pace with the number of animals coming in, resulting in the shelter becoming increasingly over capacity. The shelter is putting out a plea for the community to consider adopting or fostering a shelter animal.

In the first 18 months of the COVID Pandemic, animal shelters saw historical low numbers of animals coming in and the ones in the shelter were not staying very long. Beginning in 2022, the situation in many animal shelters across North America has seen a dramatic reversal, leaving shelters at or over capacity. The pandemic has taken a toll on animal shelters, and right now, large dogs are the hardest hit. Some dogs at SARC have been at the shelter for several months waiting for an adopter to come.

“As adoption numbers continue to decline, the animals are staying longer and longer at the shelter, leaving limited space for lost or injured animals to come in,” said Shelter Manager Shelley Joaquin. “ With over 100 animals in care, and even more waiting to come in, we hope the community will consider adopting or fostering a shelter animal. The Surrey Animal Resource Centre is hosting A Free Fur All Adoption Event June 23-27 and waiving all adoption fees in hopes of getting animals adopted and making room to support more animals in need.”

What can the community do?

Help get a lost pet home. If you help get a lost pet home by asking neighbours nearby if they know the pet, checking for ID, letting it stay with you while posting a photo on social media platforms and filing a lost report with the local shelter, you can prevent that pet from entering the shelter.

Adopt a pet. By adopting a pet right now, you don’t just get that animal out of the shelter, but you also make space for another animal to enter.

Foster a pet. If you are not able to commit to the lifetime of a pet, consider fostering the animals that have been at the shelter for a long time to give them a much-needed break from shelter life. (http://bttr.im/qx4vv)

Volunteer at the shelter. Volunteers are an important part of the SARC team and we need you now more than ever. (http://bttr.im/69ki7)

The shelter will have extended adoption viewing hours on June 23 - 27th, from 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm.

If someone wants to help but is not able to take an animal into their home, they can apply to be a volunteer or donate.
