Introducing our newest Veterinarian Dr.April Lau. Some of you may have met her already and we are excited for have her join our team!

Dr. Lau received her veterinary degree from the University of Melbourne in 2023. After graduating, Dr. Lau ultimately decided to return to B.C., where she grew up.

Dr. Lau grew up surrounded by pets since an early age which led to her developing a strong appreciation for these furry companions. Her passion and interest in animals were the main motivators in achieving her childhood dream of becoming a veterinarian.

Dr. Lau has an adorable but lazy Ragdoll, "Udon". Her extended fur family also consists of "Muiju," a Bernese Pyrenees mix, and "Mocha," a rescue tabby. In her spare time, Dr. Lau enjoys taking her cat out for strolls, watching dramas, and trying out new eateries with her partner. She has also recently taken up crocheting small animal plushies. As an avid drinker of coffee and bubble tea, Dr. Lau is always up for a coffee and bubble tea run.

She is elated to take the first steps into her veterinary journey with SSVH and is looking forward to being another pillar of support for everyone.

Introducing Dr.Rifat Alibhai! The newest addition to the SSVH team!

Dr. Alibhai grew up on a small tropical island called Mombasa (Kenya, East Africa). After finishing high school, she attended Michigan State University for her pre-veterinary medicine. She moved to Edinburgh, Scotland, a year later to attend the University of Edinburgh's, Royal School of Veterinary Studies where she completed her veterinary degree and graduated in July 2003. Post graduation, she worked in England and then moved to Canada in 2008.

In her spare time, Dr Alibhai enjoys spending time with her husband and 2 children. Her hobbies include reading, listening to music, kayaking, cooking, and travelling. She has a labradoodle called Bilbo Baggins and some fish.

Dr. Alibhai has a special interest in all aspects of internal medicine, geriatric care and likes to practice fear free techniques in her everyday interactions with her patients.

She is looking forward to practicing at SSVH!

To all our wonderful clients and their furry friends

It is with heavy hearts and much sadness that after 12.5 years with us, Dr. Jen will be leaving after March 31st.
She has decided to step back and lighten up her veterinary load and hence will be leaving SSVH.
Dr. Jen has been a well-loved part of our family here and we will miss her terribly.
She started with us when we were still in the old building and has seen us through much growth and many changes. Dr. K will miss Dr. Jen like she would her right arm, and everyone will miss her laugh and her Joi de vivre.
We all wish Dr.Jen the very best in her future endeavors.

Introducing our newest doctor Dr.Lana!

Dr. Turcic-Brandau, otherwise fondly known as Dr. TB or Lana, grew up in rural Nova Scotia before moving to Ontario shortly before high school. Although she has many early memories of convincing her mother to help her save injured wildlife, as well as starting a teddy-bear repair business, she never considered becoming a veterinarian at a young age. It wasn't until a brief stint in film school that she re-discovered her passion for helping animals and decided to make that her career. She relocated to Guelph, Ontario where she completed a Bachelor of Science and graduated with distinction from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2023.

Dr. Lana has always dreamed of moving back to the ocean, so when an opportunity came up to move to British Columbia, she jumped on it. She completed 7 months in emergency medicine before deciding she missed the on-going relationships with clients too much and made the switch to general practice. She is so excited to be part of the team at South Surrey Veterinary Hospital.

Another new addition to the SSVH team is Dr.Hilary Hunter! Some of you may have already had the pleasure of meeting her with your furry family members.

Dr. Hunter graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2023. Hilary has always had a passion for travel which led her to the East Coast to complete her Bachelor of Science major in Biology at Acadia University, located in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. Upon her completion of her bachelor’s, Hilary was accepted into the DVM program at the Ontario Veterinary College, in Guelph, Ontario. During this time, she spent 4 years pursuing her dream of becoming a veterinarian. After graduation, Hilary decided to move to British Columbia to be with her partner and explore all that British Columbia has to offer. Hilary lives with her partner Josh, and her cat Thea.

In Hilary’s spare time, she enjoys traveling, horseback riding, hiking, skiing, and cooking. Hilary loves all the outdoor activities that British Columbia has to offer but also loves the variety of cuisines that Vancouver has, and she is always eager to find a new local gem!

Hilary grew up on a horse farm surrounded by animals big and small. From a young age Hilary knew she wanted to be a vet, and spending time on the farm solidified this passion. From taming feral cats, to competitively showing horses, she could not get enough of the human- animal bond. Even though she has retired from showing competitively, Hilary still enjoys the company of horses and loves trail riding. She still has her childhood pony, Fergie, that lives with her family in Ontario.

Dr. Hunter has a special interest in Dermatology, Ophthalmology, soft tissue surgery, and pain management. She knows the importance of the human-animal bond and believes that every client and patient that comes to SSVH deserves the best care possible. Being a pet owner herself she knows that our furry friends are not just companions they are family. Dr. Hunter values communication, respect, and empathy, offering this to all clients and patients. As a new graduate, Dr. Hunter brings to the clinic new medical techniques and the most recent veterinary medicine standards. Dr. Hunter is beyond excited to start her journey in veterinary medicine at SSVH and can’t wait to see everyone.
