โ€œI was scared today.

I was scared to get on, scared to walk out the yard because I had a bad ride the day before. One bad ride, and it made me scared.

I didnโ€™t know why. Iโ€™ve had 1000 bad rides. Iโ€™ve had 1000 falls. Iโ€™ve broken bones and bruised my pride on countless occasions, but today I was scared.

Why? Because confidence is fragile. It takes months and years to build and seconds to lose and yet we are so careless with it.

When we get on a horse, we wear a hat to protect our head. We wear body protectors, gloves, boots...

We pay so much attention to protecting ourselves physically, we forget that our minds are not invincible, and our confidence certainly is not.

Your bank of confidence needs regular deposits, not just from others... but from you. Self confidence is the most valuable currency in life.

When you go to get on, and you hesitate, you falter and you start to ask yourself โ€œcan I do this?โ€, chances are, your account is almost empty.

Every time you laugh and say โ€œoh no, Iโ€™m no goodโ€ or โ€œso and so is 10x better than meโ€, you make a withdrawal from that account, and before you know it, your account is empty and youโ€™re scared to get on.

But every time you say โ€œIโ€™m really pleased with how that wentโ€ or โ€œI think I rode that really wellโ€, your balance increases.

We need to learn to give ourselves a break, pat ourselves on the back and allow ourselves to feel proud of where we are - after all, most of the time weโ€™ve worked bloody hard to get there!

Recognising your strengths is just as important as recognising your weaknesses. Never allow yourself or anyone else to empty that account.

Confidence is valuable, donโ€™t bankrupt yourself.โ€

Love your horse, not what they can do.

My horse had to retire this year.
It was unexpected and it changed everything.

But for him, nothing changed.

He still goes out in the field, still gets a nice big fluffy bed, cosy rugs and a carrot every night. He still gets remedial shoes, gets his teeth done and regularly sees a physio.

Nothing changed for him, because heโ€™s not a machine and the level of care he gets is not dependant on what he can do. I loved riding him, but that was a privilege, not a right and certainly not a way for him to โ€œearnโ€ good care.

Heโ€™s not a car that can be scrapped or sold on because he canโ€™t do what I want to do anymore.

When you take the reins of a horse, you make a commitment.

A commitment to ensure their happiness and welfare always come first; whether they are jumping big tracks, competing at Grand Prix level, hacking or grazing in a field. Level of competition or ability should not dictate the level of care.

Horses are fragile. They break. They get injured. Soemtimes they have to retire. It doesnโ€™t mean they are any less worthy of your care, attention or money.

Stop giving away, โ€œloaningโ€ or selling your broken down horses because they canโ€™t do what you want them to do and if that means you have to change your plans or put them on pause, then so be it.

Love your horse, not what they can do.

The quickest way to take effort out of your horse is not knowing when to quit.

Think about this scenario:

A football coach tells his players to run up-and-backs down the field as fast as they can. The players respond, put out their best effort, and run the sprints to the best of their ability. Then, the coach says "Great job! As your reward, let's do that again."

Now, apply the same scenario to your horse:

You ask your horse for a specific response. The horse responds correctly and gives you the 'feel' you were looking for. You say, "Great job! As your reward, let's do that again."

In both scenarios, the players and the horses put forth maximum effort thinking that their reward would be to rest once they completed the task at hand. But instead, their reward was more work. That has to be frustrating, right?

I know that when you finally get the 'feel' you are looking for, it is tempting to keep repeating that feel over and over again to make sure that your horse has that skill masteredโ€•but, you have to remember to ๐ซ๐ž๐ฐ๐š๐ซ๐ their effort first, then ๐ซ๐ž๐ข๐ง๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ๐œ๐ž the skill later.

Buck Brannaman:
I find that there are an awful lot of people that could certainly use some help to make them better horseman, but itโ€™s like some of them get to a certain level and the only thing they ever really master is being a snob. With these modern riders, itโ€™s almost like itโ€™s not even about the horse anymoreโ€”itโ€™s about them. Itโ€™s about how the horse can make them look good. In Georgeโ€™s (Morris) generation, it was about what they could do to make the horse look good. They were coming from a different place. Thereโ€™s a lot more that George has to offer than just how to get your horse over a jump. Fine horsemanship goes way beyond that. The truth about the horse doesnโ€™t changeโ€”and hasnโ€™t for several lifetimes before we were here. Whatโ€™s true about horses today is the same as what was true about them hundreds of years ago. Horsemen like George, who have a logical approach and teach the basic fundamentals, will always be successful. Heโ€™s rightโ€”there are no shortcuts. Good horsemanship will always prevail over the latest gimmick sold at your local tack shop. It doesnโ€™t matter which discipline of riding youโ€™re talking about.

A small stab in the heart is what you feel when you put up the day's riding list and you see riders sinking heavily in their shoulders when reading which horse they are assigned for the lesson. A small stab in the heart for that horse that for an hour will carry around a rider who has already decided that he does not like his horse. A small stab in the heart for the horse that did not choose the rider himself but still does his best, lesson after lesson.

Riding is a privilege and something you have chosen to do. If you chose to ride at a riding school, your instructor assumes that you actually want to learn how to ride. The instructor's highest wish is that you get good at it.

Often there is a plan and a thought as to why you are assigned to that exact horse. Before you mount up next time, ask yourself "what can this horse teach me today?" All horses have something to give, a feeling or a new tool in the box.

The art is actually in being able to get a lazy horse to move forward, to get an uncertain horse to gain confidence, a naughty horse to focus or a tense horse to be released. It takes work. If you think a horse is boring, it's more likely that you don't ride the horse as well as you think! It's not easy to be confronted with your own shortcomings, but it is in that very situation that you get the chance to truly grow as a rider.

The excuse that "it's not my kind of horse" is actually a really bad excuse. A good rider can ride any kind of horse. A good rider has trained many hours on different types of horses to become a good rider. A good rider can find and manage the gold nuggets in every horse.

If we absolutely want to ride, it is our duty to strive to do it as best as possible, even if it's only for fun. We owe it to every horse that carries us upon it's back.

We were so busy we didnโ€™t get many pictures, but this is what I scrounged up hahaha
