Dear Reining Community,
It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the unexpected loss of the legendary mare known as "Lexi" or Wimpys Little Chic. Lexi's passing marks the end of an era in the Reining world. Her remarkable show record, esteemed position as a NRHA Triple Crown Champion, and #1 All-Time Leading Dam of Reining Horses made her a true icon.
The Arcese family, along with renowned trainer Shawn Flarida and manager Jeff Oswood, mourn the profound loss of Lexi. To the Arcese family, she was not just a phenomenal athlete; she was a beloved member of their family. Her loss leaves an irreplaceable void in their hearts, and they will forever cherish the memories and legacy she leaves behind.
Trainer Shawn Flarida reflects on his time with Lexi with deep sorrow. He considers it an incredible privilege to have worked with such an exceptional mare. Lexi's unmatched drive and talent propelled them to unparalleled heights in the Reining world, and she will always hold a special place in his heart.
Manager Jeff Oswood added, "Lexi's impact on the Reining world cannot be overstated. Her contributions as a producer and her stellar show record have left an indelible mark. Her passing is a tremendous loss for all of us at Oswood Stallion Station, and her absence will be deeply felt."
At Oswood Stallion Station, Lexi held a special place in the hearts of the entire team and employees. Their pride in her accomplishments and their deep care for her were evident in their unwavering support. Recognized as the "one extraordinary special" mare by everyone, Lexi and her offspring created a unique bond within the Oswood family and Reining community. Each member of the team took immense pride in their work, cherishing the opportunity to care for such an extraordinary horse. Their commitment to Lexi's well-being and success was a true testament to their passion.
Lexi's foals brought tremendous joy and fulfillment to those at Oswood Stallion Station for the past 13 years. The shared experience of working with Lexi and seeing her offspring thrive has been incredibly rewarding.
Lexi's legacy will forever live on in the hearts of the Reining community. Her remarkable show record, trailblazing achievements, and profound impact as a producer will be remembered for generations to come. As we mourn her loss, let us celebrate the extraordinary journey she took us on and the mark she left on the world of Reining.

Sincerely,
Jeff and Wendy Oswood

Thank you to everyone in the equestrian community that has responded to the National Equine Industry Survey so far. In addition to the great number of responses, we need a few more! Can you help?

To help us reach the most accurate and reflective sample size, the deadline has been extended to Monday, February 20, 2023.

Click here to start the survey: https://bit.ly/3XydRhQ

It is very important we reach a threshold of responses from across regions, disciplines, and sectors. This extension helps ensure we capture an accurate picture of the diverse equestrian industry in Canada. Please provide your input – your experience matters. We appreciate your time and support.

This picture was shared in a group I am in and wow- lots of people were showing their lack of knowledge on spade bits and how they are used!!

Yesterday I talked to a woman about how great a dressage whip can be because her only experience with whips was people actually whipping their horse, so obviously she thought the equipment was pretty horrible. But with a whip you can touch, pressed, gently tap with rhythm, etc. You can even pet a horse with a whip. (just to be clear, she asked about the topic) it was a great conversation and it totally changed her view on the equipment once she realized that it can and should be used in a much different way than she had envisioned.

If your only experience with bits is PULLING back on them, then yeah, you probably think this bit is horrid!!!
But it’s not a contact bit- it’s a signal device. Used properly, it is way more mild and comfortable than any snaffle you will ever use. I understand Vacquero tradition enough to be dangerous. I do not claim to be an expert on signal devices, but that said, I do have students who ride in a bosal, which used correctly, is also a signal device.

The spade bit is designed in a way that a Vaquero can be holding 60 feet of rope coiled up in his rein hand, and still communicate to his horse. Keep in mind, he can only move his hand maybe an inch or two. 60 feet of coils takes up the entirety of even a large man’s hand, and if he moves his hand around too much it’s going to mess up those coils and he’s going to lose a finger!

This bit is basically shaped like an equine lollipop. A slight lift of the hand rotates this mouthpiece just enough to get the horse to stretch his neck forwards over top of the bit. This bit acts forwards, not backwards!!!! If you don’t get that, then please don’t say this bit is harsh or medieval, because you are showing your ignorance. (see “Mount stupid on the dunning Kruger chart”)

This is also not a training bit. In the Vaquero tradition a horse is quite advanced to even be expected to carry this bit while being ridden from the bosalito. A horse must really understand what the answer is before being expected to operate off of this equipment.

I have a few students who recently moved to a curb bit. Each of them went through the same emotional journey- they initially thought A curb was somehow cheating. Each of them could get their horse on the aids and can do the things in a snaffle, but it’s maybe not as consistent as they would like it to be. The first couple days in the curb was met with some resistance as horse and rider went through a big learning curve, but by the 2nd to 4th ride each of them understood why I suggested the tack change! In the snaffle the riders had to do a lot to constantly position the horse. If their horse came above the bit, they had to move their entire arm to maintain a straight line from elbow to mouth, and then apply a series of half halts to bring the horse back into connection.… because that is how snaffles work!! In the curb, they literally did nothing. The horse starts to come above the bit, touches the curb, feels the pressure as the bit rotates, and is encouraged to mobilize the jaw, which unlocks the TMJ and the poll joint, and the horse immediately returns to stretching the neck forwards. Occasionally the rider needs to do a slight lift and release, but that’s pretty much it.

The problem is we see people riding in a curb bridle like it’s a snaffle! 🤦‍♀️😭. I don’t mind seeing two hands on a curb, but your hands better stay close together and only do small movements. And that is for any curb. A spade bit is basically created to just hang there. The big difference is a spade is harder to abuse because if you get the bright idea to pull straight back on this puppy, your horse will likely flip over. Other bits cause horses to suffer silently, but if a horse is being ridden incorrectly in a spade, there won’t be anything silent about it. For those that don’t understand it, that might sound terrible. But the truth is, if someone is stupid enough to weaponized this bit, they’ll probably only do it once, because it’s not going to work out well.

Ridden in correctly, this bit signifies true skill.
