This young fella has an overbite. This causes the upper jaw to be misaligned from the bottom jaw resulting in those hooks.

This is a great example of how important it is to have consistent dental work from a young age. The first picture is a 6 year old horse that has a large amount of reserve crown. Giving you lots of room for correction.

At 6 years old, a horses teeth are fully developed. After the age of 6 they will continually erupt and wear until they have used up their reserve crown.

The second picture is a 20 year old horse that has little to no reserve crown, this makes it extremely difficult to balance the mouth and often times it is too late for a full correction.

The notorious “Vegas Hook” this hook appears from ages 7-9, 11-13, and 21-23. This particular hook restricts anterior/posterior movement of the mandible. It is a very common issue, but with a simple solution we can maximize that movement to get the horse eating and feeling much better!
