Thunder Bay Veterinary Hospital The Thunder Bay Veterinary Hospital is a small animal practice located in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Cana
(38)

We are a multi-doctor facility, allowing us to tap into the multiple areas of expertise that each individual veterinarian brings to the practice and for the review of cases by more than one doctor when needed. After hours, our own veterinary staff members handle emergencies so you know that when a crisis occurs you will be dealing with someone that knows you and your pet. Please browse through thi

s site for more information on the Thunder Bay Veterinary Hospital, our staff, and about the services you depend on for your pet. We welcome any questions or comments which you may have about our facilities, services, veterinary medicine or this website. Our hospital provides medical, surgical, and dental care as well as behavioural consultations. We have a laboratory and radiology department for patient diagnostics, as well as the capability to do endoscopic examinations and ultrasound. Our practice has five Registered Veterinary Technicians on staff, more than any other local practice. We also have the only graduate of the Canadian Veterinary Dental Technician course as well as three additional support staff members with over forty years of clinic experience. One of our registered veterinary technicians is also a certified pet dog trainer who does both canine behavioural consultations and a variety of training classes are offered.

Update on travel to the US with your dog:

Today the new US dog travel laws go into effect.

As always, please see the CFIA Website at https://inspection.canada.ca/en/animal-health/terrestrial-animals/exports/pets/dogs-usa
[1] for the latest info.

As it stands right now, following concessions from the US, the requirements proposed have been temporarily reduced. Note that this is a temporary delay on the full requirements originally proposed with anywhere from 6 months to 9 months before they are implemented again (the requirement of a signed form)

Starting on August 1, 2024, dogs entering or returning to the United States that have been only in dog rabies-free or low-risk countries (This is Canada) in the past 6 months must meet the following requirements:

* Have a receipt of the _CDC Dog Import Form_ - The public complete this from the CDC website and is valid for 6 months and multiple entries. It can be completed the same day as travel (or prior) and shown to CBP officers a printed page or on a phone screen.
* Dogs must appear healthy upon arrival.
* Dogs must be at least 6 months old at time of entry to the U.S.
* Dogs must have a microchip that can be detected with a universal scanner to identify them.

The CFIA is going to recommended that clients continue to get their pets microchipped and Rabies vaccinated if they plan to travel to the USA
Again a reminder that for dogs ENTERING CANADA Rabies vaccination is still a requirement, therefore even though the US may not currently require it, your pet will need to have been vaccinated to get back home.

If you have a pet who recently arrive in Canada from a High Risk Rabies Country please see the CDC and CFIA websites for further details.

We continue to await instructions on how to travel with your pet under 6 months old. This may include for specialty medical care to Minneapolis, the veterinary hospitals in Grand Marais/Duluth, and puppies travelling with their owners on vacation.

Stay tuned for further updates!

New rules for bringing dogs into the U.S.
1) On August 1 2024, the United States is implementing new rules for traveling with your dogs across the U.S/ Canada border.
2) The rules vary for each dog based on where you are traveling from, but ALL dogs will need to
Be at least 6 months old
Have a microchip
Appear Healthy on arrival
Have a CDC dog import form receipt. (this form will be available on the CDC website for you completion prior to travel)
Have a rabies certificate showing Rabies was administered after your dog was microchipped and is up to date.
Have a veterinary record showing they have received care 6 to 12 months prior to travel. This can be a receipt from a veterinary visit, a vaccination certificate, a health certificate or an examination page.
4) For the most up to date information please visit the CDC website. The DOGBOT page will help owners determine what rules apply to their particular dog. https://www.cdc.gov/importation/bringing-an-animal-into-the-united-states/dogs.html
5) Additional information can be found on the Canadian government website (CFIA), however the CDC website should be the primary source used. https://inspection.canada.ca/en/travelling-pets-food-plants/travelling-pet
As of the date of this press release (July 11,2024), The US and Canadian governments are still discussing the exact form completion process, so these are not currently available, However we will make an update as soon as these details are confirmed.

What can I do now to prepare for travel with my pet after AUG 1 2024?
Ensure your pet is microchipped and that their rabies vaccine is up to date AND was given AFTER your pet was microchipped.
Appointments are available for current clients to microchip and rabies vaccinate your dog now, while we await the additional form that will be required.

Why are these new rules coming into effect?
The United States government is working to reduce the risk of Dog maintained rabies virus variant entering the US as rabies is a significant public health risk and is a fatal disease in people that is completely preventable.

It’s going to be a bit more complicated, but not insurmountable for dog owners traveling to the U.S with their pets. The CFIA is working with the U.S authorities to streamline the process and provide further guidance soon.
STAY TUNED !!!
