These kinds of messages are 100% unacceptable.

We are usually more than happy to answer any questions about pet care, but waking up to messages like this will not elicit a kind response.

This is not how to get us to help out. As we have stated, our resources for rescue are very limited (time, space, money).

We will take 24-48 hours to respond to messages about rescue as we have to figure out if we have space/resources for the animal in question.

We DO NOT have a vet locally that sees reptiles, like many pet owners in Thunder Bay, leaving us to also have to travel out of town for our own pets or use vetster.

There is NO gain in rescue aside from spending time with animals. It is financially & emotionally taxing. A lot of the times we are just a place to send the animal off to so the owner doesnt need to say goodbye to it themselves. It also takes away time we could spend with our other pets or kids.

While we wish we could've helped in this case, snarky message aside, we CAN NOT take in sickly animals at this time as our space for rescue is VERY limited and full (we have a Kingsnake, a red eared slider currently available for adoption and 2 leopard geckos & a budgie that will be available soon).

If you've had a birthday or been to one of our public events in the past couple months you may have noticed someone has been missing from our lineup.

When we got Titan, he had an old injury at the tip of his tail that he always had troubles shedding and as he aged, it got harder and harder to shed. This past winter, the shed started cutting off the very tip of his tail where the injury was and he dropped it. We thought that was the end of that, but it eventually led to more and more of his tail starting to rot and he was dropping more and more of his tail.

We got a prescription from vetster, in hopes it would stop the infection, while we tried to find a local vet willing to amputate his tail (which we did a month later), before making the trip to Dryden.

We are extremely grateful for the vets at Hillcrest vet in Dryden for taking the time and care to do this procedure for Titan. He lost a total of 6 inches off his tail, but he's on the road to recovery. ❤️

One of our most asked questions at birthday parties is - can your tortoises stick their heads ALL THE WAY inside their shells? The answer is YES - and here's a picture of our Greek tortoise, Clover, showing off how she does it.

Both species of our tortoises (sulcata and greek) are spur thighed tortoises - they'll use the keratin coating of the spurs in their legs as a protective shield, or an extention of their shell.

Clover fell asleep under the basking spot in her enclosure, so her instinct tells her to protect herself by pulling everything inside her shell incase something sneaks up on her while she's napping.

But of course, there are other times when they'll nap out in the open with their heads and limbs all out, and expose themselves. Or they'll fully burrow in the dirt of their enclosures, so just the very tip top of their shells are poking out.

Surinam roaches are a legal species of roach, around the size of a fingernail. They colonize easily as they are parthenogenic (all females!).

Unlike crickets, they are quiet and don't smell. They eat a diet similar to isopods and feed off wood mulch, leaf litter and veggie scraps. They like to borrow and can climb glass.

Our friend Mike Chan from C and C tortoises recommends this as an option if you have an omnivorous/herbivorous reptile that is impacted, lethargic or not eating.

The green bath consists of a variety of dark, leafy greens, celery, cactus pad, Mazuri tortoise chow and warm water that we put into a blender and strain. We add pure carrot juice, spirulina and organic green powder.

Keeping reptiles is more than just about the right temperature, it's also about knowing which supplements your reptiles need or what lighting would be best for their enclosures.

We will dive deeper into lighting (and UV) in a separate post.

Temperature and humidity are two important factors when keeping reptiles. We always recommend temperature guns when purchasing a reptile as it is the most accurate way to measure surface temps in your enclosure.

Available for adoption. 🏡

Meet Mary, the pink belly side necked turtle.

She is a mellow turtle who can be communal, depending on the attitude of the other tank inhabitants and so long as adequate space is provided.

These turtles are native to rivers, ponds and swamps of Australia and Papua New Guinea.

Madagascar Giant Day Gecko (Phelsuma madagascariensis grandis) are popular pet geckos that typically live up to 15 years.

Native to tropical & subtropical forests of Madagascar, this species of day gecko can grow up to 8-12 inches in length. They have long, sticky toes that are forked near the ends, which help them climb smooth or vertical surfaces, even ceilings.

They are a diurnal, and are fast geckos that do well in tall, planted enclosures. In the wild they survive off bugs and flower nectar but in captivity we substitute flower nectar for day gecko food (a protein substitute made from fruits, vegetables and other nutrient rich foods).

They do not make good beginner reptiles as they are more high maintenance than other geckos and do not take well to handling.
