Titan was a big lizard with a big personality. He brought us and so many others so much joy - he attended upwards of 200 birthdays and events with us, it makes this all the harder to write.

Last spring, we took Titan to the vet to have half his tail amputated and since then, his health slowly declined. It got to the point where he struggled to keep water in and we had to help him eat his food. Despite our best efforts, nothing we did could prolong his life.

Titan loved fish. He loved exploring and meeting new people. We loved the way he'd bounce his big goofy jowels in the spring, showing off for no one but us.

It doesn't feel like we got long enough with him, and we will miss him forever. ❤️

Did you know snakes have 2 lungs, however most of them only utilize one? The smaller of the 2 remains like a small deflated balloon.

MOSTLY TAIL? I THINK NOT! KNOW YOUR SNAKES, INSIDE AND OUT:

Snakes have most of the same organs we do, they’re just arranged differently. They also breathe air, have red blood, and feel pain and fear, including the fear of falling, just like us. In fact, snakes and humans have far more in common than most people realize. They also provide a valuable service. We should be nicer to them.

(And they do have a brain. Not sure why that was left out.)

📢ANNOUNCEMENT📢

We've heard feedback from several parents at our last couple events about our last announcement.

One of the hardest parts about Sleeping Giant Exotics to let go of was our birthdays & educational events as we enjoy interacting with and educating the public and the people we meet at our outings!

We are happy to say that we are going to resume birthdays and events - but things will be looking a little different going forth! We are excited to announce our good friend Kyle offered to take over our birthdays and educational events!

With this change you can expect to see us as we transition Kyle into this position, and we still intend to be present at most larger events!

While we are resuming education, we will not be continuing with rescue at this time - this may be something we will consider in the future once our personal & professional lives settle down some.

We still have some rescues available, we will be posting soon (things have been busy so we haven't had the opportunity yet).

One of our most asked questions at birthday parties is - can your tortoises stick their heads ALL THE WAY inside their shells? The answer is YES - and here's a picture of our Greek tortoise, Clover, showing off how she does it.

Both species of our tortoises (sulcata and greek) are spur thighed tortoises - they'll use the keratin coating of the spurs in their legs as a protective shield, or an extention of their shell.

Clover fell asleep under the basking spot in her enclosure, so her instinct tells her to protect herself by pulling everything inside her shell incase something sneaks up on her while she's napping.

But of course, there are other times when they'll nap out in the open with their heads and limbs all out, and expose themselves. Or they'll fully burrow in the dirt of their enclosures, so just the very tip top of their shells are poking out.
