To any of our puppy clients in south west Manitoba you may want to check this out if your wanting to get your late summer/fall 2024 puppy started to run hunt tests or hit the field this fall. A great club with amazing people. This class is totally worth it!!

This is probably the best article that I have come across that goes into great detail about the differences between a Labrador Retriever from North American lines, Compared to a Labrador Retriever from working bloodlines out of England, Scotland, and Ireland.

This article touches on all the points that I go over with people when I get asked my view on this subject.

Probably what I like best about this article is that it doesn’t in my opinion bash one set of bloodlines over another set of lines in comparing the North American Labrador field lines to the UK field lines.

If you are interested in this topic take the 5-10 minutes have a read. You will come out much more educated on the subject!

7 LONG days till the due date for our Hawksgarth Moonshine WCI JH X Emmanygan Half Penny litter of black beauties. (Shine x Layla). From what it looks like on the outside it appears that Layla may be carrying more than enough in terms of puppies!!! We will get a quick approximate puppy count tomorrow. For now Layla has been her usual happy loving self. Constantly looking for someone to throw ANYTHING for her to retrieve. If she can’t find anyone she’s carrying an old bumper or her tire toy around.

Our Merlin WCX SH X Willa WC pups at 16 days of age. They have almost DOUBLED in size this past week. Willa definitely is feeding them the good stuff!! Everyone’s eyes have opened in the past few days and the pups even started to get mobile with a few wobbly steps here and there.

Go home date for these little ones starts May 9, 2025 which seems so far and so close all at the same time.

Something to think about next time you show, or go training. No matter what the venue is!

Your dog gets absolutely nothing out of being competitive for you. Not a darn thing. Of course dogs are bred for specific jobs, or they’re bred to be athletic to a certain degree.

They have no idea how much money is added to the pot. They have no idea that this is a qualifier. They have no idea that this is the Master National.

And DESPITE us... DESPITE our nerves, our flaws, our incorrect cues, our huge emotions, they get the job done to their very best ability. Even when we fail them by letting our emotions get in the way, they come back and they try again. For US. Let that sink in. If only we could all be so understanding.

To think of an animal that is forgiving and flexible enough to put up with the repetition of practice, the intense nerves of the handler, the stress of hauling and they will still meet you at the end of their lead ready to go is MIND BLOWING.
If you haven’t done so lately. Thank your dog

If you’re successful, thank the dogs that put you there and made you. Thank the dogs that gave everything they had for you simply because you ASKED them to.

If you’re still on the journey to success, thank the dogs that made you fall in love with your sport and who have helped give you the confidence to want to learn more and be better.

We can never stop learning as dog men and dog women, and by continuing our education. Every dog in our future will be better off.

Our first class of the spring filled up with in 3 days. We have had a few people interested in a second class, so I have decided to run a Second obedience class starting May 9 thru to June 12. We offer 10 spots in our 6 week obedience classes. This class is open to all breeds!!

After repeated requests Oak Lane Retrievers is pleased to be again offering residential/ basic obedience classes for puppies and dogs (All Breeds) starting May 8, 2025, and running thru June 12, 2025
We will be focusing basic obedience (sit, down, wait, stay, recall (come/here) and heeling on leash) as well as correct puppy/dog socialization. Dog park Manners, as well as touching on proper grooming and dog care.
Classes will be located at Oak Lane Retrievers facilities in an outdoor setting

Our Merlin WCX SH X Willa WC puppies at 12 days of age. Unfortunately we ended up having 1 little boy, and 1 little girl not make it. They were born smaller than the rest of the litter, and it was a big stuggle for them to keep up. Even with being supplemented with formula. 12 puppies for a 1st time mom was a lot to ask.
The 10 remaining pups are absolutely THRIVING, and Willa is proving to be an amazing and very protective momma. These pups are like little brown sausages. They are very active and wiggly. Never missing any opportunity to eat either from a bottle or from mom. Their little eyes and ear as slowly starting to open, and everyone’s eyes should be open by the end of the weekend.

The long awaited arrival of CHOCOLATE puppies is finally over!! After almost 3 years of patiently waiting, training, and getting health clearances our Merlin WCX SH X Willa WC litter arrived this past Sunday evening. Willa had 12 beautiful chocolate babies (yes 12!!!) 6 males and 6 females!! Everyone is happy healthy, and gaining daily. Willa is doing great, and is an amazing 1st time mom!! If you have any questions about this litter please send us a PM we will be happy to answer any questions you may have!!

We had a number of people correctly guess 12 puppies in our contest last Friday. We will be taking the the names of the people who correctly answered 12 puppies and drawing for an Oak Lane Retrievers 3/4 Length Baseball T-Shirt tomorrow!!
