🚨 NEW PRODUCT ALERT 🚨

Our pork rolls are made in Canada from locally sourced Canadian pork, no antibiotics, hormones, or preservatives. The chews are medium in toughness and are boneless making them well suited for puppies to gnaw on especially when they are teething and mouthing (biting) things they are not supposed to. Chewing the tough pork skin grinds off the plaque building on the teeth and helps to clean your puppy’s gums and teeth.

Worried about the excess fat? Our pork skin chews contains mostly skin. The thin layer of fat remaining is melted away during the air drying process.

So if your pup loves our sliced pig ears, this will be a guaranteed win! What do you think? Is it something you'll try?

🌈 What does it mean to eat the rainbow? For humans, eating fruits and veggies in a variety of colours ensures that you get the necessary vitamins and nutrients to maintain optimal health. 🧐 How does this apply to our doggos?

🐄 Not all proteins are created equal - a bite of beef does not equal a bite of chicken 🐓 Beef is a great source of B12s and iron, while chicken is a great source of niacin and selenium. 🐔🐮 Both chicken and beef contain these nutrients but in different ratios - and by adding a variety of proteins to your dogs daily meals, you will achieve a nutritionally balanced diet over time!

⚖️ We decided to create a Medley Bag of our favourite chews! 1 of each protein to give your doggo a chance to try out their favs, but also keeping them interested in their food - while adding the much needed variety every healthy diet needs!

🛍What’s in the bag?
1️⃣: 🦆 duck foot
2️⃣: 🐰 rabbit foot
3️⃣: 🐷 pig ear slice
4️⃣: 🐮 beef esophagus
5️⃣: 🐓 chicken foot

😋AVAILABLE NOW - link in bio!

❗️As always, if your dog has never tried a certain protein before, introduce it slowly by letting them have a bite and see how they react over a 24h period before proceeding to let them have the whole piece!

🍣Salmon Bites: but make it a ❗️Introducing our 🆕 SALMON SKIN ROLLS!!

🧡Anyone who’s tried our salmon bites knows the pups go crazy for them and it’s so easy to go through a bag, so we thought: let’s try making these last a little longer!!!

🍣These chews are suitable for dogs of all sizes and will keep your dog entertained while providing a healthy snack! Keep in mind that the skins are a fattier protein (the good kind! But fatty nonetheless) - with smaller dogs and puppies, you’ll want to take it away at the ¼ or ½ way point and save the remainder for another day.

🧡We’re launching them at a special 20% off introductory price until the end of the month, so grab yours before the price goes back up July 1st!! They’re definitely going to be your doggo’s new fav treat!!

We had a few questions about which treats are good for maintaining a healthy heart for your doggos.

💙And the answer: hearts!! ❤️

Did you know?

🦆Duck hearts are high in taurine. Taurine aids in cardiac function, eye health, immune system function, and in multiple other systems. Taurine is especially concentrated in the heart muscles.

🦆When taurine levels are low though, the heart becomes weaker and pumps less efficiently. A dog with low taurine levels can develop DCM. This causes a dilated heart muscle with a bigger heart chamber containing more blood. Because the heart muscle is weaker (taurine is low), blood doesn’t circulate through the system the way it should.

🦆But you may ask, shouldn't my kibble already have all the essential nutrients my dogs need?

Yes...and no. Most kibble relies heavily on plant-based proteins which means it’s not a good source of taurine by itself.

💛 So, what do you think? Will you be getting some duck hearts into your dogs diet?? 💚

☯️ We’ve now covered the effects of hot, cool and neutral foods on the body according to Traditional Chinese Medicine - but did you notice something missing? 🐔Chicken. The most common protein loved by humans and doggos alike and one of the more affordable meats is considered WARM - what does this mean? Read on!

🥰Warm Proteins:
• chicken
• pheasant
• llama
• camel
• shrimp
• anchovy
• trout
• lobster

❣️Warm Fruits/Veg:
• sweet potato
• squash
• parsley
• ginger
• turmeric
• sunflower seeds
• oats
• coconut
• peaches

🐓Recall that hot proteins can aggravate inflammation. If you’re feeding a primarily chicken based diet, you may want to add in a few neutral or cooling proteins to lower the energy every once in a while.

🤢When your pup has an upset tummy, a lot of vets recommend a bland diet of chicken and rice. When we were reading up on Traditional Chinese Medicine, chicken was universally categorized as warming - there weren’t any sources that were on the fence about it, chicken is a WARMING protein. I no longer feed my pups chicken if their tummy isn’t feeling so great (throwing up/diarrhea) - instead, I feed them turkey, a protein that is considered neutral according to TCM. ⚠️Please remember to follow what your vet recommends, but it can’t hurt to ask them if a bland turkey meal could be an alternative to chicken, until your pup is feeling 100% again. If you don’t believe in TCM, that’s totally okay too, it’s up to you as your dog’s caregiver to give them what you think is best with the knowledge you have on hand!! Whew! 😓 This was a long one but there is more to be said about rice and upset tummies as well - we’ll have to save that for another post!

Snape is definitely our biggest fan of the furry beef ears. His mawm tells us that this delicious treat can keep him busy for a long time.

🐮Did you know that Beef ears are a great alternative to antlers, bones and rawhide. These delicious chews are fully digestible and are much softer, making it less likely for your dog to chip a tooth. And the fur helps clean out the digestive tract.

🐮These furry treats are high in protein and low in fat. Since ears are mainly made up of cartilage, they are naturally full of chondroitin. This helps improve the health of joint cartilage, and specifically aids dogs with arthritis, or who are hard-wearing on their joints, such as active, working dogs.

🐮Cow ears can also help your dog with improving his oral hygiene. Chewing on cow ears helps to remove plaque from the teeth, and reduce the chances of developing periodontal disease.

So, do you think? Will you consider replacing those hard antlers, bones and rawhides with these fantastic chews?

We have been asked a few times if we have any vegan type treats. And although we don't sell them in our store, we will be providing sweet potato slices as gift with purchases!!

🍠The sweet potato is organic and full of nutrients. In addition to their delicious flavour, these vegan dog treats are full of vitamin A, minerals, and beta-carotene. Beta-carotene is a nutrient rarely found in dog food yet is essential for promoting a strong vision, while Vitamin A is a major contributor to a healthy immune system.

🍠These treats do not have any additives, artificial colors or preservatives.

🍠Sweet Potato Slices are a great option for dogs with allergies or food sensitivities.

So what are you waiting for? Place an order so you can snag a FREE * bag of sweet potato slices (70g)!

☯️ Continuing our series on the different energies of foods and their effects on the body once consumed, here is a list of cooling foods! Few proteins fall under this category and many more fresh fruits and veggies appear on this list! Cooling foods are said to reduce inflammation in the body according to Traditional Chinese Medicine.

🧊Cool Proteins:
• duck (& duck egg)
• rabbit
• frog
• crab
• po***ck
• scallops
• cod
• octopus

❄️Cooling Fruits/Veg:
• apple
• banana
• cranberry
• strawberry
• watermelon
• pear
• broccoli
• cauliflower
• kelp
• tomato
• cucumber
• celery
• spinach
• swiss chard
• and so many more!

🥶These are the proteins you may not want to feed regularly depending on your dog - I personally keep duck and rabbit on high rotation as my dogs seemed to enjoy cooler areas of the house and reducing the intake of warm/hot proteins has helped them! Or feed when the weather is warm to balance internally. You can also balance it by feeding warm/hot proteins!

🧊Signs of a dog with excess Yin (or cooling energy) are fatigue, weakness and poor appetite. Try feeding your pup warmer proteins and see if there is a change!

💕Don’t forget to save this post so you can refer to it later! If you missed it, we posted the list of hot proteins a few posts back. Stay tuned for a list of the list of proteins that fall in between, you won’t want to miss it!

🦪Same same, but different.🦪
Since we introduced green lipped mussels to our menu, we’ve gotten a ton of questions about what the difference is between blue mussels and green lipped mussels!

💙BLUE MUSSELS: are rich in omega 3 fatty acids and an excellent source of manganese. Manganese is one nutrient that most diets, kibble/cooked/raw are deficient in, so it is a great supplementary treat for all dogs of all ages.

🔵Blue Mussels live in cooler waters and have a blue undertone to the shell colour - they are naturally smaller in size. The mussels we use are certified organic, sourced right here in Canada, from the beautiful shores of Prince Edward Island.

💚GREEN LIPPED MUSSELS: are a superfood protein, also filled with beneficial omega 3 fatty acids and multiple studies have shown their effectiveness in improving and maintaining good joint health. They are an excellent alternative to fish oils!

🟢Green lipped mussels are only found off the coast of New Zealand and are much larger and expensive compared to blue mussels. While the GLM we use are not certified organic, they grow in some of the least polluted waters and are completely safe for your dog!

♨️Both mussels we make are thoroughly washed and steamed before we dry them to eliminate the risk of parasites.

🥴Honestly, not all dogs will enjoy the taste of mussels - your dog may very well turn their nose up at them! But it’s one of the few foods I make sure they eat, whether they like it or not - the benefits far outweigh picky taste buds. I always find a way to make them eat it 😏 If you need tips on how to hide mussels into your pups meals, message us!!

🍽We have both mussel options available in the shop - to order: drop by the online shop linked in our bio or send us a DM!

Love me some cronchy treatos 😍 We got a special delivery from Steph, .the.kleekai’s mom, for our first .dogness haul yesterday.

It’s crazy how much work and care goes into making each bag of these treats. It’s clear that seeing smiling pups enjoying their treats is all the motivation they need to pack every bag.

If you’re in Canada, highly recommend you check out OMD for some tasty, single-ingredient, locally sourced and made, treats 😍

03/07/2021

Organs are a great source of vitamins A, B, D and E - these are used to metabolize the food our dogs eat, creating energy for facilitating everyday body processes. They also contain essential minerals (potassium, sodium, chloride and more) required to carry out enzymatic reactions in your dog's very own organs!

Some dogs turn their nose up at raw organ meats, so a fun way to entice them to eat it is in the form of a crunchy chip or tasty chew! Hello .dogness!

Organs are typically richer than muscle meat, so take it slow and gradually add more to your dog's diet as their stomachs adjust. A little goes a long way - no single organ should account for more than 10% of your dog's food intake.

We'll keep it short for now, but stay tuned for a follow up post with more details on feeding organ meats, as not all organs are created equal!

🐔Let's talk chicken necks! 🐔

These chicken necks are a safe alternative to giving your dog's cooked bones as they are strong in build and will break into smaller pieces rather than splinter like a cooked bones.

This is a Canadian made treat sourced from Canadian poultry 🐓. There are no additives, chemicals or preservatives! It makes for a quality treat that is delicious, crunchy, and suitable for all breeds.

As with all .dogness treats, pet supervision is recommended.

Tripe is considered a muscle meat and is essential to completing a balanced dogs diet. But! The tripe you find at the grocery stores for humans is not the same as the type your dog needs.

Grocery store tripe is bleached and boiled, with much less nutritional value than green tripe. Green tripe is untreated, leaving all the residual stomach contents of grazing animals in tact. Since dogs lack the enzyme required to break down fruits and veggies, the leftover contents is pre-digested, making the nutrients in the vegetation easier to absorb by your dog! This partially digested plant matter also naturally ferments inside the stomach, making it a great source of probiotics!

Green tripe is a great source of digestive enzymes, vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids! Fair warning: it IS stinky!! But your dog will eat it so fast you won't have to smell it for long!

☀️ Treat spotlight: Tripe Curls ☀️

Our tripe curls are made from premium grass-fed open range beef. They break very easily into small sizes, making it easy to do training.

🐮Remember, because the tripe curls are not processed with chemicals or preservatives, each piece may have a different color. You may even see some white spotting on them. The white spots are the natural salts that are being drawn out during the dehydration process.

🐮These treats are rich and vitamin B1, B2, B6 and B12! The Natural Vitamin B complex acts as a coenzyme promoting biochemical reactions to change carbohydrates into glucose providing energy to the body. It is necessary in your dog's diet for the absorption of fat and proteins.

🐮If your dog is Vitamin B deficient you will find that they have excessive shedding, constantly picking up fleas and ticks during the summer, weight gain or constipation, anxiousness and stressed, and have increased cholesterol.

🐮It is important to note, that vitamin B is best consumed from a natural form. A lot of the supplements on the market are made from waste products from petroleum or coal industries. For example vitamin b1 is usually made from coal tar derivatives, hydrochloric acid, acetonitrile and ammonia, and vitamin B12 is made from Cobalamin reacted with cyanide! The synthetic vitamins are cheap, but they're probably not giving your dogs any benefits they need.
