Living in a human world can be scary! The best way to get through fearful situations is through regular training. Although we may not find certain situations scary, our dogs certainly can - and what may seem minor to us can be traumatic and lead to long-lasting negative consequences.

Training builds trust and trust is what will help your dog tackle fearful situations. Always keep a close eye on your dog's body language, and if something is too much don't try to push them through it. Instead, reset the situation and try again another time.

Strengthen behaviours by integrating training into social situations. When your dog is distracted by other dogs and people at home, why not run through some training? It is a great opportunity to challenge your pup by performing for a crowd!

Be sure to set your dog up for success by starting easy and when their attention is not fully captured by socializing. Encourage your dog to periodically check in with you!

Please consider donating to the Carl’s Canines Big on Beagles Wiggle Walk-a-thon Fundraiser. There are countless beagles in need of support and a forever home here in Ontario. Big on Beagles focuses on older rescues with chronic health issues and helps them find love and support during their twilight years. To donate to the cause follow the link:

Every walk is a great opportunity to train. Of course proper loose leash walking as well as polite greetings need to be always practiced, but you can add in other behaviours. Sitting before crossing the street, sit + stay while waiting for a light to change, perhaps a "spin" or a "paw" on a busy street.

Your dog will enjoy the added rewards during a walk and hopefully be more attentive as well!

Although it may seem obvious, building strength of your dog's known behaviours by practicing in distracting environments is key to making a behaviour stick long term.

Carefully monitor your dog's emotional state while training in a new space to ensure they are in the right head space to make training effective and fun.

Start a session in a new space by starting with easy behaviours before moving to the ones you are trying to strengthen

Keep training sessions short but regular. This is especially true for dogs who are new to R+ training - start with short sessions and see how your dog responds. Give your dog plenty of breaks because learning is hard work!

Weekly Training Tips #3

Avoid adding unintended cues for behaviours when training. A common example is leaning forward while giving the cue. This is because dogs are hyper-attentive to our body language, and will easily pick up on our subtle movements. They will quickly associate these movements with the intended cue, which then adds the unwanted cue to the intended cue.

Try and isolate your cue by keeping a normal, still body posture when training.

Weekly Training Tips #2!

Minimize distractions when training new behaviours.

Although once behaviours are established it is good to start testing them in unfamiliar and distracting environments, with new behaviours it is best to start easy! Set up your dog for success by forseeing potential distractions in your training environment.

Introducing Weekly Training Tips!

It is important to have a good understanding of your dog's emotional state when you are training them - although we want to challenge them when training, if they get frustrated or tired it is time for a break. After some practice it will be easy to tell if they are ready to continue training or need a rest.
