We know that visiting the veterinarian can be stressful for both pets and pawrents. That’s why we do everything we can to make the process easier for everyone: From our neighbourhood, walkable locations (so pets can stop in on their daily walks for a treat or two!) and welcoming environments, to pet care specialists trained in fear-free techniques and healthcare practitioners who genuinely care for their patients and provide common-sense advice - we want you and your pets to look forward to visiting us!

Xylitol: Did you know that it’s toxic for dogs?
The sweetener xylitol can be a great way to have sweet treats while you’re on a diet, but for your dogs, it’s bad news. Even small amounts of xylitol can cause hypoglycemia (very low blood sugar), seizures and other problems.
The challenge for dogs parents is that xylitol is in more stuff around your home than you might realize, whether you’re counting calories or not: Everything from toothpaste to protein powders to diet drinks can contain xylitol (also sometimes called ‘birch sugar’).
Just remember to read your labels, and keep potentially toxic items out of reach of your dog. If you suspect your dog has accidentally ingested even a small amount of xylitol, call your vet or your veterinary emergency clinic ASAP for help!

JOINT PAIN: It happens to dogs, too.
If you’ve been noticing that your dog has been seeming stiff, is reluctant to ‘jump up’ and play, or is licking their paws more than usual, joint pain might be the cause.
Like humans, dogs can develop joint pain over time, either as a result of age or following an injury.
The good news is that there are many ways to help your dog feel less pain, improve mobility, and get back to feeling more ‘normal’. Talk to your vet about your options!

This is the awesome Monty. Monty would like to report that while he loves his snood (so warm! so snuggly!), he is rather less enthusiastic about his boots. We know, Monty - it's hard to be warm, stylish AND comfortable!

Wondering how to give your dog the best nutrition?
While every dog is different - and puppies have different nutritional needs than adult dogs - it can be helpful to remember that a balanced diet contains carbohydrates, protein, fat and fibre along with vitamins and minerals to keep their bones strong and their coats gleaming.
(Never come across the word ‘palatants’ before? It’s a term used in the pet nutrition industry to describe things that pets find palatable or tasty - like ‘umami’ for humans!)
You don’t have to make all your pet’s meals from scratch or spend a fortune on fancy pet food - it’s all about ensuring that the building blocks are there.
Wondering whether your pet is getting the right nutrition for their specific needs? We can help - just give us a call!

COYOTES IN THE CITY
We've heard from our clients and neighbours that coyotes have been spotted in the downtown Toronto area - you may have seen one yourself, looking a little out of place near high-rise condos or retail stores.
Coyotes have been familiar sights in other parts of the city for years now, usually near large parks or ravines where they've found comfortable habitats and can help control the rabbit and rodent population. However, in the the past few years we've had more sightings in urban areas, where they often find good sources of food in human refuse.
It's important to know that coyotes generally do not pose a danger to humans. However, they are hunters and can pose a danger to pets.
With that in mind, here's what you should know about coyotes in Toronto:
- Never feed coyotes! Feeding them only makes them more likely to return, and to see humans as a good source of food.
- Don't try to approach, pet, or interact with coyotes
- Keep your pets on leash, especially in parks with brush-filled areas or if you have heard there is a coyote in the neighbourhood
- If you spot a coyote, pick up small children and pets - but do turn your back or run away
WHAT TO DO IF YOU ENCOUNTER A COYOTE:
- Be BIG and LOUD! Yell "Go away!", but don't scream. A strong voice and assertive gestures send a clear message.
- Slowly back away from the coyote. Maintain eye contact and don't run.
- Use aversion conditioning techniques such as shaking your car keys, popping or waving an umbrella, throwing an object (such as a clump of dirt, a branch or a small stone) at the coyote, or make noise like clapping your hands, banging pots, or even filling up a garbage bag with air and snapping it while yelling "Go away!".
- Battery/movement-operated flashlights, tape-recorded human noises and ammonia-soaked rags may deter coyotes from entering your property
If you see a coyote that seems aggressive or overly familiar, you should call 311 or visit toronto.ca to report the sighting.

Just a reminder: We have two downtown clinics!
If you live/work in downtown Toronto, we have two clinics to serve you: One in the heart of Liberty Village, and the other just steps from Corktown Common in Canary District.
We’re still independently owned and we’re not part of a big chain or a conglomerate, but we do want our clients to have options, especially if they move from west to east Toronto (or vice versa).
And we deliver the same caring, pet-health-focused service at each location, with fantastic staff members at both!.
