Heatstroke generally occurs in hot summer weather when dogs are left with inadequate ventilation in hot vehicles. However, heatstroke may also occur in other conditions, including:
• When an animal is left outdoors in hot/humid conditions without adequate shade.
•When exercised in hot/humid weather.
Simply lowering the body temperature fails to address the potentially catastrophic events that often accompany this disorder. A pet suffering from heatstroke should be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible.

The size of the treat does not matter. In fact, small training treats work best. Some pet parents also use a portion of their pup’s daily ration of food as treats. This works very well with kibble and rolls of food that can be cut into small pieces. Again, be sure that you use something that your pet really loves as a treat.
Hello Mango Mojito Sorbet!

Since we had a mild winter, ticks have gotten a head start.
Black-legged ticks are endemic in the province and can spread infections such as Lyme disease, the powassan virus, babesiosis or anaplasmosis.
We recommend testing them for tick-borne diseases since our pets are not able to show if they are sick until symptoms are severe. Especially if there has been lapse in providing them with anti parasitic medications.
Please reach out to us if your pet is at risk of getting ticks or fleas.
🐶: Leo
It’s Important to kill fleas fast before they can lay eggs, and kill many specles of ticks quickly to reduce the Ilkellhood of disease transmission.

Tulips, while beautiful and vibrant, can pose a threat to cats if ingested. The bulbs, flowers, and leaves of tulip plants contain toxic compounds called terpenes, which can cause adverse reactions in cats if consumed. Some of the symptoms of tulip poisoning in cats include vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, and in severe cases, difficulty breathing and increased heart rate.
It is best not to bring tulips or lilies home but instead to get a safe alternative such as orchids, roses, or snap dragons.

The Tooth, the Whole Tooth, and Nothing but the Tooth
In a normal mouth, the teeth are clean and white and the gums attach smoothly to the tooth. There is no redness or tartar. The tooth is bathed in saliva, bacteria, and food particles (plaque) but if this is brushed away, it never mineralizes into tartar.
If we do not regularly disinfect our mouths and brush away the plaque, the plaque will mineralize into tartar (also called calculus – gritty material that the dental hygienist scrapes away).
Studies have shown that brushing three times a week was adequate to maintain healthy teeth and gums but daily brushing was needed to control existing gingivitis.
Soft human toothbrushes will work but never use human toothpaste as these contain sudsing ingredients not meant to be swallowed. Finger brushes are available and are smaller for puppies and kittens.
Unfortunately, once calculus has built up, brushing won’t remove them. And home care of the tooth is never perfect and periodically tartar must be properly removed and the tooth surface properly polished and disinfected. Just like us, regular professional cleaning will be required.

A key ingredient found in most antifreeze is ethylene glycol. Ethylene glycol is highly toxic and affects the nervous system and kidneys. What’s worse is that ethylene glycol has a sweet taste, so pets can easily be drawn to and ingest it. It takes only a small amount of ethylene glycol to be potentially fatal.
While ethylene glycol is most commonly found in antifreeze used in car radiators, that is not the only location it can be found. Antifreeze may also be found in:
• The base of portable basketball hoops
• Placed in toilets to ‘winterize’ a house and keep plumbing from freezing
• Printer and pen inks
• Eye masks
• Snow globes
• Some household latex paints
If you think your pet may have ingested antifreeze, the best thing to do is immediately take them to the veterinary hospital. You’ll also want to be sure to bring with you the packaging from the antifreeze, so the veterinarian can determine the best form of treatment based on the amount ingested and the ingredients listed in the product.

Here are some tips to keep your dog hydrated during hot summer days: 1. *Provide plenty of fresh water*: Make sure your dog always has access to clean, fresh water. You can even add ice cubes to their water to keep it cool. 2. *Increase water intake*: Encourage your dog to drink more water by placing multiple water sources around the house or yard. 3. *Offer wet food*: Feed your dog wet food, which has a higher moisture content than dry food. 4. *Give frozen treats*: Offer frozen treats like peanut butter-filled Kongs or ice cubes made from chicken broth. 5. *Limit exercise*: Avoid exercising your dog during the hottest part of the day (usually between 11 am and 3 pm). 6. *Provide shade*: Make sure your dog has access to shaded areas where they can escape the direct sun. 7. *Monitor for signs of dehydration*: Keep an eye out for signs of dehydration, such as excessive panting, drooling, or dry gums. 8. *Add water to their meals*: Mix water with their meals to increase moisture intake. Remember, every dog is different, so it’s essential to observe your dog’s preferences and adjust these tips accordingly. 🐶: Juno and Martha!
You can already hear the excitement when we met Keeley! Socialization is getting puppies and kittens used to people, and experiences that they will encounter frequently in their adult lives. Feel free to pop by for a meet and treat, sometimes called a victory visit. We have tons of treats or bring their favourite treat. 🐶 : Keeley

Feline enrichment! Indoor cats have a number of unique needs, including providing adequate litter box setups, scratching and climbing structures, as well as an opportunity for play. Feeding puzzles allow them to engage their minds, while helping them to maintain an optimal weight. 😸😸Benjamin and Fig take their puzzle feeder testing VERY seriously
Not a cat? Too bad. Dr. Amanda’s daughter, Hailey, showing us how to make a Cat House 🌈 for her cats Birken and Mr. Nibbles.
Just wanting to let you all know that we are closed for Easter starting this Good Friday, April 7. We will reopen on Monday, April 10. Here we see Dr. Erin’s German Shepherd, Ruari. She’s 13 years old and has arthritis but she’s moving around so well! If your pet seems to be slowing down or has mobility issues, please call to make an appointment and we can plan a way to improve their quality of life.
Have you ever wondered how to brush your pet’s teeth? We’re here for you! How do we introduce the toothbrush, toothpaste, and brushing activity to our pets? The answer is with patience, compassion, and TREATS! The toothbrush can be a finger toothbrush, a standard toothbrush, or as simple as a gauze square. The toothpaste must be designated as pet safe because we’ve yet to teach any pet to rinse and spit, human toothpaste is not safe if swallowed, and fluoride is toxic. In the video, Dr. Erin will demonstrate how to brush their teeth. Starring her cats, Fig (blue) and Benny (orange)!
We had such a good first visit with Atlas! The training process with your pet is a process that takes both time and patience, and a willingness to learn for both of you! 🐶: Atlas 👩🏻⚕️: Dr. Amanda
Buddy is ready to shred the slopes! Some short shouted breeds have brachycephalic ocular syndrome, and tend to have dry eyes which leads to ulcers. He’s wearing “prescription” dog goggles to protect his eyes, and he doesn’t mind it! Stay epic!
Littermates Shobi Potato and Pork Chop haven’t seen each other in months. They are 13 months old now, and have been raised by different families since they were 8 weeks old. Even though they had different upbringings, they share the same quirks. Both get spooked by loud noises, especially the noise produced by buses and trains. This is why guide dogs are bred to have the physical and behavioural traits that make them best for the work. Fear, anxiety and stress are challenges faced by cats and dog. Drs Erin and Amanda are able to develop a treatment plan that will help them have a better life. Book your appointment with our doctors to discuss and identify your pet’s behavioural concerns.
Nail trims are a common source of stress for pets and owners alike. Always only do what your cat will allow you, even if you can only do one paw per day. Only do the nail trims when your cat is calm and, hopefully, feeling cuddly. Make sure the environment is quiet, or with soft music (Humming “Soft Kitty, Warm Kitty” works. We swear by it!) Here we see Shadow just trying to be a kitten by being curious what’s around him. And yet he doesn’t pull away. 🐈⬛: Shadow 👩🏻⚕️: Martina
Let’s talk lily poisoning. There are benign and dangerous lilies out there and it’s important to know the difference. Some lilies are highly toxic to cats ingestion as small as a couple of leaves, petals, even the pollen from the plant, or the water from the vase can cause acute onset kidney failure in cats. Lily of the Valley does not cause kidney failure but, if ingested, can cause cardiac arrhythmias and even death in both dogs and cats. If you suspect your pet has ingested a lily, please contact a veterinarian immediately. Source: https://www.petpoisonhelpline.com
