As we embrace the winter ❄️ solstice, we extend warm wishes to all. This time of year represents the peak of darkness, yet it also signifies the gradual return of light. In Chinese Medicine, winter is linked to the Water 💦 element, which governs the kidney and bladder systems. It is essential to support our pets’ health 🐶🐱 during this season by ensuring proper hydration and nourishment. Consider enhancing their meals with bone broth to promote optimal kidney and bladder function. Keep your pets warm and safe during the chillier months. Protect their paws from salt and ice and consider adjusting walks to shorter, more frequent outings. May this time inspire hope, peace, and tranquility.

During this festive season, let us not forget the importance of pet safety. 🎅🕎 Common holiday hazards can pose serious risks to your beloved pets. Not all food is safe for pets! 🚫 Chocolate, turkey bones and grapes are among the edible culprits that bring pets into the vet clinic or emergency clinic during the holidays.
🐾
Chocolate 🍫 is a well-known pet toxin and dogs can access chocolate even when wrapped in a present. 🎁 Alcohol is quickly absorbed by pets, leading to potential poisoning. Some plants have toxic issues for dogs and cats such as holly, poinsettias, mistletoe, potpourri, and Christmas tree 🎄 water and can cause stomach upset, drooling and vomiting. Put the lids on trash cans and keep decorations, candles, and wrapping paper scraps out of reach. Tinsel can cause serious gastrointestinal issues if ingested. By staying informed and taking necessary precautions, we can ensure a joyful and safe celebration for all! 💚💙

Common challenges facing senior pets include reduced mobility, chronic pain, organ pathology, cognitive decline, hearing and vision loss, dental disease, metabolic disease, reduced immunity, obesity, and cancer. When it comes to treating senior pets, an integrative approach that includes some complementary therapies just makes sense. 🐶🐱

As animals age, they tend to accumulate more medical problems, many of which cannot be cured. Instead, they require long-term management. Integrative treatment plans improve outcomes, reduce side effects, offer more options for managing chronic conditions, improve quality of life for animals and humans, and support the human-animal bond.

What Complementary and Alternative Modalities To Consider:

🦴 Diet Therapy: Senior pets may or may not require a prescription diet. Complementary and alternative diet options often include fresh whole food ingredients or a homemade diet can be formulated which is something we offer at TIAH.

🦴 Supplements: Supplements are being used in senior pets, and is best used with with input from your veterinarian. We are happy to discuss this with you during an appointment.

🦴 Energy modalities: Laser therapy is probably the most popular energy modality in veterinary medicine right now and is available at TIAH.

🦴 Body Work: A therapeutic exercise program, massage, or Acupuncture are all therapies to consider depending on your pet’s needs. We recently added Nicki to our team who specializes in animal rehab!

🦴 Social-Emotional Support: Mental health is an area of integrative medicine that is under-represented in veterinary medical literature. TIAH’s Hospice care is a system which provides compassionate care to patients near the end of their lives and supports their guardians through the bereavement process.

At TIAH, we understand the unique needs of senior pets. Our integrative treatment plans are designed to enhance their quality of life. Book an appointment with us to explore the best options for your pet’s health and happiness! 💚

For more information on these modalities check out the link to the article in our stories or check out our services online. Link in bio.

November is Pet Diabetes Month and we want you to know the signs of diabetes in dogs and cats. 🐶🐱
🐾
Signs of pet diabetes include excessive water drinking, increased urination, increased appetite, weight loss or a lower activity level. Obese cats have a higher risk of developing diabetes. Other risk factors include age, physical inactivity, and certain breeds. Dogs 5 years and older are more at risk to develop diabetes. This disease is on the rise in dogs, up 80% in ten years.
🐾
Pets with diabetes can live a healthy and active life. We can help you learn the skills you need to monitor your pet’s clinical signs and provide a healthy lifestyle for your pet. A special diet, insulin therapy, at-home monitoring and regular exercise are all possible strategies that could help your diabetic pet feel better and thrive for years to come. If you believe your pet may have diabetes, or have any questions about your pet’s health or plan for your diabetic pet, please schedule an appt at TIAH. 🩺

Meet: Nicki, Canine Rehab
Bye bye “ow”, hello “bow, wow, meow” 💪 So excited to have you on board!
🐾
My journey begins with a childhood surrounded by animals living in rural England and growing up with a love of dogs. I began my professional career as a human physiotherapist after graduating with a Diploma and Master of Science (MSc) degree in the UK. After building over thirty years of extensive physiotherapy experience in both Canada and the UK, I decided to shift my focus to include animal rehabilitation.
🐾
I am an experienced dog handler and a Fear Free Certified practitioner who works with dogs and cats to reduce or remove any anxiety triggers that can cause fear in pets. I am a lifelong learner and active member of the Animal Rehab Division, along with other local, Canadian, and international animal rehabilitation focused community of practices. Community, advocacy and giving back are very important to me. I have a keen interest in supporting senior and rescued dogs.
🐾
On a personal note, I am a wife, a mother of two teens and a pet parent to our eight-year-old dog, Meg. In my spare time I enjoy jamming with my saxophone with a band and staying active through hiking, kayaking, paddleboarding, cycling and travelling with my family. ☀️

On this National Canine 🐶Lymphoma Awareness Day, we emphasize the significance of November being National Pet Cancer Awareness Month. Cancer poses a serious threat to our pets, being the leading cause of death among older cats and dogs, yet it can impact pets at any age. By promoting early detection, we can significantly enhance treatment outcomes and quality of life of our cherished companions. 🩺🐕
🐾
The word “cancer” carries immense weight, stirring deep emotions within us. It is also a call to action that invites us to rethink our priorities and cherish the bond we share with our beloved pets. Let us guide you through the decision-making process on what interventions align with your personal philosophy, and work together with you and with a veterinary oncologist or surgeon for any specialist interventions desired. Coming soon: infusion therapies that are as comfortable as having a snuggle with your pet on the sofa for a few hours in our quiet Living Room. ❤️
