To deliver the best dog behaviour and training advice to you, it's crucial we invest in continuing education. That's why this year, we sent our Toronto team to participate in the second annual 3-day Dogs in the City Conference hosted by Educanine. By attending this conference, we're demonstrating a commitment to staying up-to-date with the latest research and techniques, expanding our skill sets by learning from renowned experts, improving client outcomes with enhanced knowledge, and networking with fellow professionals to share experiences and build relationships within the industry.

The esteemed presenters included:

Dr. Kristina Spaulding, author of Stress Factor in Dogs. By understanding a bit about the neuroscience behind stress responses, we're more effective in helping dogs that are overwhelmed by the urban environments we live in.

Emily Strong, co-author of Canine Enrichment for the Real World. Implementing canine enrichment strategies can significantly improve the welfare of our dog's lives, which often helps improve training and behaviour outcomes.

Sam DeJong, Certified Control Unleashed Instructor. Control Unleashed exercises are often where the theory meets practice, and by mastering the nuances of these exercises by an instructor that's been certified by Leslie McDevitt herself, we'll be more effective when we coach you.

2025 is just around the corner, and we look forward to further investments in our continuing education!

Why Teach a Chin Rest?

Cooperative care is amazing! Soda the Jack Russell is learning to rest his chin for handling.
A chin rest can help your dog:

βœ… Relax during vet exams
βœ… Enjoy grooming
βœ… Feel safe with handling

Cooperative care is introduced in our Puppy Start Right and Foundation Skills classes. It's worth the effort, especially starting in puppyhood, so your dog can enjoy a lifetime of relaxed, stress-free visits to the vet and groomer (and so will you!)

Mookie the Dachshund is mastering the paw target! 🐾 This exercise is fantastic for improving body awareness, problem-solving skills, and focus. By teaching Mookie to touch specific target with his paw, we're enhancing his cognitive abilities and physical coordination. Plus, it's a fun way to challenge and engage his curious mind!

Watch how Sarah is working with Lexi the Labrador Retriever with her dog reactivity. While using food rewards is almost always used frequently, especially in the early stages, Sarah is already incorporating two additional elements that really supercharge our client's reactivity progress.

βœ… Informational Cues like "Where's the dog" that allow us to tell our dogs that something potentially concerning is in the environment much earlier, so they are less likely to get surprised and get over threshold. This of this as like avoiding a jump scare, but rather a trusted friend telling you "there's a scary scene in this movie coming up" so we can be ready for it, which makes the experience less stressful.

βœ… Movement after a moment of success is a very powerful reinforcer, as it closely matches what the function of the unwanted reactive behaviour (barking/lunging) was. Now, Lexi is learning that quiet, calm behaviour earns not only food rewards, but also physical and emotional safety.

Struggling with reactivity with your dog? Check out many of the resources we offer, including our online Helping the Leash Reactive Dog on-demand webinar, in-person or virtual 1-on-1 lessons, or our Reactive Dog Group Classes.
