Six years ago, I met my best friend – an excitable, affectionate (and very needy) Doberman named Bella. As we were driving home on that first day, I looked down at her big brown eyes as she rested her head in my lap, and I made her a promise. I promised to always be there for her, to do what’s best for her and to provide her with a life full of happiness, chew toys and extra-long walks.
In order to give Bella the quality of life she deserved, I sought out to find the best possible dog food I could get her. I fed her premium kibble but that caused issues. Bella developed skin conditions, became anxious and her bowel movements became irregular. On top of all that she experienced plaque buildup and bad breath that never seemed to go away. Everything pointed to the kibble being responsible for her failing health.
Naturally, I knew we had to make a change. I have a background in fitness and nutrition so I went to work researching the best options for her. I switched Bella to raw food but found that companies were selling portions that weren’t meant for Bella. The containers were either too large or too small, never providing the right amount. Air-filled containers would cause freezer-burn and many products contained fillers and cheap meat or never revealed the ratio between plant-based protein and meat.
I became frustrated with the low quality and lack of honesty that I was seeing in the dog food market. After all, don’t our best friends deserve better? I realized that if I wanted change, I would have to do it myself, so I founded Nutricanine.
