As we approach the Canada Day Holiday, now is the time to make a plan to keep your pets calm and safe. Fireworks and party festivities can be most upsetting. Here are some tips worth considering:

1. Provide a safe haven β€”a quiet secure space where your pet can retreat at will when needed.

2.. Provide β€œtimeouts”—breaks from party action especially if a lot of young children are around and interacting with a pet not used to such attention.

3. Make sure your pet’s ID is securely fastened to them and that microchip details are up to date, in the event that your pet runs to escape fireworks noise.

4. Keep to as regular routine and diet as possible. Party food is not the treat you may think it is.

5. If your pet regularly reacts to fireworks or thunder storms consider a β€œthunder” shirt or similar.

6. Dogs are one event learners. If they are frightened, they will remember and this could set off a pattern of behaviour that may become problematic in future. In extreme cases medication may be needed to take the edge off of the fear.

With a little planning and observation you and your favourite fur kids can enjoy your Canada Day celebrations.

Stanley had a hot spot on his neck after a lake swim. We needed to get creative to distract him while the area could be β€œtreated” and the treat container did the trick. 🐢❀️🐢.

A hot spot is an area of itchy infected skin that develops when wet fur can’t adequately dry in hot humid weather. Bacteria grows causing itching. Scratching and licking exacerbates the problem and a full on problem develops. To treat a hot spot , we usually shave the fur, cleanse fully and apply antibiotic cream. Keeping the area clean and dry is paramount.

Our Story

There has been a veterinary hospital serving clients and patients in the Lawrence Park and neighbouring area for over fifty years. In 1992, Dr. Larry Wilder renovated the previous hospital and renamed it β€œLawrence Park Animal Hospital”. Although there had been a hospital at this location, the declining health of the previous owner had resulted in a very small client base. Dr. Wilder’s practice was essentially a new practice start-up. In the ensuing years, the practice has steadily grown, providing veterinary services to the neighbourhood’s dogs and cats. The practice contributes significantly to the shelter community and specifically the Durham Region Humane Society, providing veterinary services for complex cases, along with veterinary services for dogs from the Caribbean. Giving back is a high priority for Dr. Wilder. With the growth of the hospital, the staff has grown from one part-time employee to its present complement of staff and their fur babies.
