Tick talk: Winter is on the way out and spring has sprung. Wildlife is waking up and ticks that may have been dormant in January and February resume their search for a blood meal. Now is the time to resume administering flea and tick medication. We have seen positive Lyme disease cases amongst our patients and active ticks. If you have paused the medication for a few months, a blood test may be recommended before restarting. Please contact us as soon as possible to discuss your pet’s specific needs for flea and tick control as well as whether a Lyme disease vaccine is recommended.

Ticks are ick but we have a fix for that.

Winter is the time for skin irritation—sidewalk chemicals, indoor dryness, licking all contribute. Now tjat the snow has melted, its prime time for allergy flare ups as dogs trot through decauing brown leaves and grasses. Jada had skin irritation on her belly area. Dr. Eves shaved it and cleaned with some antiseptic solution. Jada is focused on treats so she doesn’t seem to mind.

Drake, who ate a grape is a bit tired after we induced emesis and successfully retrieved grape. Why worry about one grape, you might ask? From our perspective our thought process is this: Do you know exactly how many grapes were consumed? What number of grapes are poisonous? 1? 4? 10? It’s really impossible to know without a great risk. We err on the side of caution —better to induce vomiting than to treat a very sick dog if poisoning ensues. Drake is just fine and enjoying a rainy Sunday. But no grapes. 🍇🐶❤️

Our Story

There has been a veterinary hospital serving clients and patients in the Lawrence Park and neighbouring area for over fifty years. In 1992, Dr. Larry Wilder renovated the previous hospital and renamed it “Lawrence Park Animal Hospital”. Although there had been a hospital at this location, the declining health of the previous owner had resulted in a very small client base. Dr. Wilder’s practice was essentially a new practice start-up. In the ensuing years, the practice has steadily grown, providing veterinary services to the neighbourhood’s dogs and cats. The practice contributes significantly to the shelter community and specifically the Durham Region Humane Society, providing veterinary services for complex cases, along with veterinary services for dogs from the Caribbean. Giving back is a high priority for Dr. Wilder. With the growth of the hospital, the staff has grown from one part-time employee to its present complement of staff and their fur babies.
