April's learning some valuable lessons since I adopted him in July.
Early this morning he learned that humans can't see in the dark (an 11.7kg cat is quite a tripping hazzard).
Just now he discovered peanut butter. 😎

Mommy Dearest?

A new study has found that male southern resident killer whales are less likely to get scraped up by other whales when they have their post-menopausal mothers by their sides.

So well expressed and absolutely true.

Recently, a fairly judgemental post has been re-circulating talking about animals during euthanasia, in their last moments before we say goodbye, and whether or not their owners are present when they pass in the veterinary environment.

I wanted to take a moment to clarify some points and offer a more compassionate perspective on this matter.

The bond between animals and their owners is so often profound and beautiful; they become an integral part of our lives and families, and it is our undeniable responsibility to ensure their well-being and happiness throughout their lives, and, in their final moments.

Veterinary professionals who dedicate our lives to caring for your cherished animals, understand the immense emotional weight of our profession. We care so deeply for your pets and strive to create a peaceful environment in both life, and death. If you are unable to be there during their final moments, you will bet that we will be there to reassure them, comfort them, and tell them how loved they were. And, that we also understand your decision to be there or not. It’s beyond HARD to witness the passing of your beloved friend.

The statement claiming “90% of owners will not stay with their pets during euthanasia” is also completely untrue. Most owners DO stay. But everyone’s personal situations, emotional and coping mechanisms in these challenging situations vary, and it's essential not to judge one another. Compassion reaches out to pet owners, too, and what they may be going through.

While some pet owners may find it unbearable to witness their pet's passing, others may find comfort in being there. It is a personal decision, and no one should be judged for it. Instead, what matters most is the love and care we shower upon our pets throughout their lives.

For those who could not be present during their animal’s euthanasia, whether it was your decision or not, please do not feel guilt when you read the post circulating. Animals do not know that this is their final moment- they do not understand the concept of euthanasia. They understand the here and now. And if euthanasia is being opted for, it is most likely they are suffering to some degree, which your kind decision is alleviating.

So please, refrain from sharing that post, as it may inadvertently cause feelings of guilt among pet owners who undoubtedly cherished their beloved animals. As veterinary professionals, our foremost concern is never to impose such guilt on anyone. We will always stand ready to offer solace, comfort, and gentle companionship to your pets when the time comes for them to find peace, regardless of whether you choose to be present or not. Our priority remains ensuring that your beloved animals AND you, their owner and best friend, receive the utmost care and compassion throughout your entire journey. 💚
