You just went for a hike, you’re cuddling your dog on the couch and suddenly you feel a little lump as you’re petting them. While searching through your dog’s fur for it, you notice it’s an attached TICK 🤢yuck, now what do I do???? This actually happened to Pachino’s pawrents who brought him in to have us remove the creepy crawlies!
Ticks are hitch hikers that bite animals and humans, engorging on blood (they can hang on for days), and even transmit diseases. 😰The sooner they’re off, the lower the risk of disease, so how do we get this thing off? Can I squish it or put alcohol on it?
No don’t do either of those! It’s crucial that you get the entire tick off at once, as it’s easy for the body and head to detach, increasing risk of diseases such as lyme and ehlrichia if the head stays in. 😬Proper tick remover keys, or a straight pair of tweezers are often most successful in getting the entire tick out. You want to go as close to the skin as possible and pull straight. Sometimes it’s hard to distinguish if the head is still attached, so checking under the microscope is a good choice - this can easily be done at the clinic. 🔬The area should be cleaned well with soap and water, and monitored for any rashes and reactions that can still appear (especially if the head is left in).
So the tick is out, are we in the clear? Not necessarily. 😪
Depending on how long the tick was on for (which isn’t simple to assume), diseases could have already been transmitted!😩 It can take 6 weeks to show a positive test, so we urge you to bring your pet into the clinic for an Accuplex test which tests for 3 more prevalent tick borne diseases (Lyme, Ehlrichia, Anaplasma) as well as heartworm. During this period, keeping a watch for any changing symptoms in your pet’s health (or you) is important. We recommend Accuplex testing annually, even if you haven’t found a tick, since it’s possible they went unnoticed (especially in our fluffy breeds) an
