šŸšŸ¢šŸ¦ŽWhether your reptile is a desert species or a tropical species, humidity plays a crucial role in maintaining optimal health! šŸ’§Too high or too low for your reptile can both cause problems, so itā€™s important to monitor it just like you would for temperature. You must research the requirements of the reptile you want extensively to provide the most accurate lifestyle enclosure, as some species require humidity up to 80% and others as low as 20%! šŸ˜±Maintaining high humidity is often more difficult than maintaining desert species, which is an extremely common issue we see in reptiles.

šŸøExamples of high humidity reptiles:
- Chameleons
- Iguanas and some gecko species
- Amphibians (their skin canā€™t easily hold water)
- Some snake species
- Some turtles/tortoise species

šŸ¢Examples of low humidity reptiles:
- Bearded dragons
- Leopard geckos
- Uromastyx
- Some snake species
- Some tortoise species

Humidity that is too low can result in problems with shedding (dysecdysis) causing it to get stuck and lead to scale injuries, respiratory concerns, severe dehydration and even lead to death.šŸ„ŗ

Humidity that is too high isnā€™t good either - this traps the heat in the enclosure raising the temperature too high, and can also cause mold and fungus to grow. Along with that, bacterial and respiratory issues are common. šŸ˜©

So how to we maintain or adjust humidity?šŸ§

ā¬†ļøTips to increase humidity:
- Regularly misting enclosure
- Larger water dish or multiple sources
- Moving water such as waterfalls, automatic foggers, drippers
- Providing humid hides (so important!)

ā¬‡ļøTips to decrease humidity:
- Increase the ventilation in your enclosure.
- Smaller water dish, keeping it at one side of tank
- Dehumidifier
- Change to a moisture absorbing substrate

While reptiles can make fantastic pets, they do have very specific requirements to ensure they thrive from habitats to temperatures to food - this takes a lot of research, and reptiles should at minimum see a rept-savvy veterinarian annually! šŸ˜ŽGive us a call at 416-763-4200 to book in your scaly friend!

I took Brie to the Animal Hospital of High Park today as she tends to get issues in her left ear - this isnā€™t new for her, she will start holding it crooked when it bothers her (apparently I don't have a picture of that) and scratch a lot, sometimes even vocalizing. šŸ˜”But just basic cleaning wasnā€™t cutting it like it does sometimes, so off the unenthusiastic cat went to see our lovely doctors. She meowed the entire drive in detest.šŸ˜“

Now seeing the debris that had been getting wiped out (and it was a lot) of course the suspected outcome was going to be ear infection of some sort needing ear drops, so canā€™t we use any? Why do we recommend ear cytologies every time there is a possible infection? šŸ§Antibiotic resistance is a big factor, as well as gold standard practising!šŸ„‡

Just because an antibiotic ear drop worked last time, doesnā€™t mean itā€™s for sure the same infection this time, and for Brie it wasnā€™t! I anticipated yeast due to the smell and colour, šŸ¤¢but it was actually a heavy bacterial infection and even tons of white blood cells and liquid discharge which is never a good sign! šŸ˜±Anti inflammatory pain medication was even prescribed for a few days to help with her discomfort, and praying that there isn't any type of tear to the ear drum. šŸ„ŗSo what would have happened without the cytology results?šŸ¤”

Well first off, there are so many different ear drops - so random choosing can mean yes it might help, and also no it might not as we donā€™t know WHAT we are treating. If we see something like rod bacteria in the ears, majority of ear drops will not help, so we would be pointlessly using them, and if this continues to occur, we could be building antibiotic resistance in our pets which means when we DO need that medication, itā€™s not going to be effective anymore. šŸ˜°Cytology is gold standard to ensure we know what we are treating, and also allows us to repeat it when the treatment is over and visualize how much better the ear is, without just looking at it and the symptoms if they have resolved. This helps us determine if we need to continue the course, even if the symptoms seem resolved! šŸ’ŖWhile we know a cytology wonā€™t be feasible every time, we do need you to know that there is a chance the medication wonā€™t work, as we canā€™t determine the significance of bacteria types without a microscope.šŸ¦ šŸ”¬an ear infection that isnā€™t properly treated will worsen and can even lead to damaged ear drums, head tilts and hearing loss, so treating early is best!

šŸ’«Brie wants to remind you that even though getting your ears swabbed is a horrible offence, she is going to be much happier with a single round of antibiotics instead of possibly ā€œtestingā€ 3 different types in hope that one will work, as we all know not all of our pets are tolerant of being medicated, and this sassy girl is one of them! šŸ˜Ž she definitely puts up a fight about it šŸ„·

07/25/2024

Iā€™m actually quite surprised at how far this grain free trend has come - when you go into a pet store 90% of the diets now being sold for dogs/cats are ALL grain free.šŸ¤ÆSo many people are feeding these boutique diets but WHY? šŸ§Well, we know that the majority of people wonā€™t actively read scientific reports, statistics, research or looking for accreditation, but they will see commercials, posters, and social media - so itā€™s easy to see why these diets are all the rage with the marketing factor.

When this trend began, there really wasnā€™t much science behind how this would truly benefit our pets and what could actually go wrong. šŸ˜£We always ask what youā€™re feeding your pets, so that we can help educate and guide you, as we all want the same thing: to feed the best for our pet to help them live the longest they can!šŸ’ŖšŸ„°

So how did this grain free trend even begin?šŸ¤Ø

Firstly, there is a lot of talk about how our dogs were like wolves and they ate meat, not grains - but our dogs are not wolves and grains have benefits! šŸ˜²One of the biggest genetic differences between wolves and dogs like Lody is starch digestion, and grains are carbohydrates which dogs actually can digest very well! We know that for humans gluten free diets are a big thing, and some may feel itā€™s the best way to go, and many pet food trends just follow human trends. šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’ØTrue grain allergies are extremely rare in pets so there really isnā€™t a need for grain free, especially because these diets may actually harm our pet more than benefit. šŸ˜°But how?

Well, the FDA has been investigating the correlation with grain free/boutique diets (including diets that are high in legumes and peas which are often used as grain substitutes) and Dilated Cardiomyopathy which is a form of heart disease. šŸ’”This was found in many breeds that are not genetically predisposed which is part of where the studies began as a common factor was these types of diets being fed. When switched to a properly researched grain inclusive diet, many of these patients got better if caught early enough! šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’ØThere are published articles, but many people wouldnā€™t actively look for it which is why itā€™s still surprising that 95% of people I speak to have never heard of this correlation. Pet stores don't often talk about any of this when recommending food, and honestly a lot of them probably aren't even aware of it! šŸ™ƒThis is why us, as your veterinary team are the ones that often bring these studies up, we love science and itā€™s our job to stay up to date on everything animals šŸ¤“

šŸ’«Some benefits of grains:
- Grains are a carbohydrate and our pets can efficiently use this as an energy source (carbs are not the devil!)
- Source of essential fatty acids
- Excellent source of fibre to help promote healthy stool
Remember: all grains are not equal in how they interact/supply nutrients, and the quality and processing is a big factor.

ā—ļøThere has not been a set conclusion as to what the problem is, but diets that are properly researched are the ones that donā€™t have any associated cases. This is why we look for the brands that follow WSAVA guidelines which are gold standard for nutrition. šŸ„‡While every pet that eats these boutique or grain free diets wonā€™t acquire this induced heart disease, itā€™s important to weigh the risk/benefit, especially if you have a breed that may be more prone to heart problems (such as dobermans, Great Danes, boxers, and cocker spaniels)! šŸ¾ If you have questions about a diet that might be right for your pet, we are happy to help guide you through that journey and help you determine if it's a safe brand to feed! šŸ˜‡

07/18/2024

Iā€™ve noticed over the last several years, there has been a huge increase in the market for essential oils and aromatherapy. Essential oils are extracted from plants šŸŒ± ; they are compounds that are well known for their smells, tastes, and medicinal uses. There are lots of ways in humans that aromatherapy can help, but it isnā€™t quite as studied in pets. We may love to start our day with some citrus, use peppermint when weā€™re sick, and get cozy and relaxed around some lavender; but how might this be affecting our pets? šŸ§Well, how pets it affects them comes down to two factors: what pets we have, and what smells we love to use&diffuseāœØRemember that all essential oils are harmful to ingest!šŸ˜µ

My general rule of thumb - if you have small animals like rabbits, guinea pigs, rats etc, and/or you have birds - avoid using essential oil diffusers in the house entirely! šŸš«While it may be okay to use in separate rooms from where they live, These creatures have extremely sensitive respiratory tracts like Bubs the rabbit so whether youā€™re using diffusers in the house, air freshener or candles, we have to monitor our pets closely and make sure the space is safe. šŸ„°Itā€™s also important to research individual species and what scents are safe for them to be around, since even if youā€™re using it in a separate room, the smell may stick to you.

For our cats and dogs, the rules are similar. We have to remember that a catā€™s smell is 14x more sensitive than ours, but a dogs is thought to be up to one million times more powerful; so keeping that in mind, itā€™s easy to see why what we smell could be overwhelming for our pets. šŸ˜±Some are more toxic to cats as they lack a liver enzyme making it harder to break down the toxin (aka essential oil). šŸ±For candles, always be careful as cats can be mischievous and jump onto shelves/tables where the candle is, and can risk burning their paws, whiskers or even tail! If they knock it over like cats love to do to objects, it becomes a major fire hazard. Never leave candles burning unattended! šŸ§Æāš ļø

ā˜ ļøSome common TOXIC essential oils to our cats and dogs are:
- Thyme
- Cinnamon
- Taa tree oil
- Citrus
- Ylang ylang
- Clove
- Peppermint oil

šŸ‘Some SAFE essential oils for cats and dogs are:
- Lavender oil
- Chamomile
- Frankincense
- Cedarwood

If your pet is exposed to essential oils by diffuser, they can still develop poisoning especially in stronger doses or long term. Always be mindful of changes in behaviour, breathing, walking, etc especially when they are in the same room. šŸ‘€If ingestion occurs, you should call pet poison hotline and proceed to a vet ASAP! The more concentrated the product, the higher the concern for poisoning. Even if a diffuser for essential oils is going in the same room, the particles can land on the pet, followed by a grooming session. Itā€™s always better to be safe than sorry, even if it means we canā€™t diffuse our favourite smells šŸ‘ƒ

If you know me through the Animal Hospital of High Park, Iā€™m typically the one that is calculating out diet plans for our patients (majority cats/dogs) that could benefit from losing a couple pounds! šŸ‘‹I love helping owners help their pets to lose extra weight, as this often can significantly improve their quality of life! Iā€™ve had tons of people say ā€œtheyā€™re acting like a puppy/kitten againā€, especially the ones that are quite overweight or obese. šŸ„¹If they have arthritis, this takes off a lot of extra pressure, and it's so great to see the spring in their step come back! Their personalities definitely come out during the journey.šŸ¤

Whatā€™s interesting (and also very frustrating for owners) is how different every pet is in terms of how easily they can shed some pounds. šŸ™ƒFor some pets this process can be quick, the adjusted feeding amount is perfect, and they reach their goal weight in an appropriate time frame. Others however, can struggle with losing weight, or even seem to gain despite the changes in feeding amounts. šŸ˜«Just like humans, every metabolism is different, so some people may struggle more to lose weight - this is also affected by other factors such as lifestyle, age, health conditions like hypothyroidism or arthritis, medications etc. We are here to help guide you through the frustrations of weight loss.šŸ’Ŗ

šŸ¶Meet Koby, one of my many diet plan clients who has struggled with weight his whole life due to having to be on steroids for Addisonā€™s disease, having surgery for a torn CCL, and loving food (itā€™s the lab part of the labradoodle)! šŸ˜…Because of the steroids, weight loss can be extra challenging as it makes them more hungry and makes weight gain very easy - because of this we switched him to a prescription weight loss diet so that he can eat MORE with lower calories - if we tried a normal pet store diet, the restricting amount may be dangerous especially as a large breed dog. šŸ˜±Koby is down 6kg and is doing phenomenal thanks to his diligent mom! šŸ‘šŸ»šŸ‘šŸ»šŸ‘šŸ»His stamina is also much better with the extra weight off, but we arenā€™t done yet, he still has some weight to lose - remember we want them to lose weight as a safe rate, so this journey can be long!šŸ«”

We want your pet to always have the best quality of life - and keeping them lean is actually a major role! Pets that remain ideal can live up to 2 years longer than if they were overweight (specifically cats/dogs)! Wouldnā€™t we all love to get those extra 2 years? šŸ„³Being overweight, especially starting at a young age can increase risks of many health conditions, especially arthritis, metabolic conditions, intolerance to exercise, pressure sores etc. šŸ„ŗWhile being a little overweight may not seem like a big deal, as these days it's very common for pets to be overweight, youā€™d be surprised how much it may feel like to the pet. While 3 lbs overweight might sound minimal, it can feel significant to the pet's body and joints, and even heart as it has to pump harder.šŸ˜°

We always try to begin the diet plan with the diet youā€™re feeding, and assessing if the issue is overfeeding kibble, treats, lack of exercise or health conditions. If we can work with your diet, we will - but sometimes we know right away if itā€™s going to work or not. Just think - if my calculation says the dog can have 2 cups a day for weight loss, but you already feed 1.5 cups, then it makes no sense why the pet is not losing weightšŸ¤Æ and often this is when a suitable change might be needed during the journey as all diets canā€™t be reduced the same. For mildly overweight dogs, even a change in pet store diet to a lower calorie can be all thatā€™s needed.šŸ§

If the pet is closer to the obese side, itā€™s important to switch to a proper prescribed weight loss dietā—ļøWhile many people find them expensive, or less accessible due to only being sold at the vet, itā€™s critical when we need a high amount of weight loss as we can only limit OTC diets by small amounts. Otherwise we risk nutrient deficiencies and imbalances if not eating enough of it. šŸ˜¬Prescribed weight loss diets are low calorie, higher fiber (for the satiety effect), and the fact the pet can eat more makes US feel better - less begging and restriction for our babies! This diet is chosen suitable for your pet based on previously mentioned factors such as exercise, eating habits and health conditions. We only recommend this change when we feel itā€™s necessary, and Iā€™ve seen fantastic results with these diets. šŸ‘šŸ»I canā€™t recommend them enough - just look at Koby who struggled so hard with his weight and he is on such a great journey right now!šŸ„°
