Our journey has been a pawsitively life-changing one, beginning in 2015 when a part-time pet store employee received a call from a regular customer desperate to find a home for what was termed an “agressive, anxious cat who will not let us near him!”
This employee was me and this cat was Ruckus, at the time named “Raukus” and on his second owner who could no longer house him. The current owner planned to send Rauckus out on his own in a parking lot; luckily, our regular customer was able to use our tips and tricks to get Raukus into a carrier and to my apartment to begin his life as a foster-fail.
Having had pets my entire life ranging from fish to dogs and everything in between, caring for Ruckus at first seemed very simple; I was going to hold onto him and look for a fur-ever home. In the mean time, I moved him from Friskies to a holistic diet, learned about good quality toys and treats, interactive play and bonding, integrating two cats from different households and pasts. The pet industry had changed a lot since I’d started working within it and not just learning as a consumer; by the time I had learned and seen first hand the effects of my application of research, Ruckus was a completely different cat and my plan was a completely different plan. I adopted Ruckus only a few months after taking him in and for the both of us, our lives changed forever.
Over time, Ruckus and I broke down a lot of his barriers and helped rehabilitate his anxious and reactive behaviors. By that time, I was still working at a pet store - however, I’d moved from Event Coordinator to Manager to Supervising Manager of four locations, taken on nail trims and deliveries on a commercial level and raised thousands of dollars over the years for local rescues, shelters and adoption facilities including Toronto Cat Rescue, Toronto Humane Society, Etobicoke Humane Society, Nothings-im-Pawsible, Save our Scruff, Black Dog Rescue and more.
I knew I wanted to move forward in the pet industry with all I’d learned; I’d also been pet sitting for my friends and customers and offering my nail trim services for several stores while managing. At this time little Lucy joined our family from an Ajax based rescue and Ruckus became a big brother! Seeing little Lucy the tortie influence Ruckus and continue the work we had been doing in relaxing his reactive responses made me consider all of the positive changes in overall health, wellness and lifestyle that had gone into Ruckus’s development and into the family we have now; I knew I wanted to share this and see other pets benefit from the application and so Pawsitive Petcare was born.
With a central base in the Toronto core all the way to St Clair West, Pawsitive Petcare offers pet sitting, private dog walks and p*e breaks, nail trims, boarding and homemade catnip toys (you heard me) across the city at a reasonable price. Our aim is to make pawsitive changes in the lives of the pets we care for, the parents we help and the rescues we continue to work with and donate to.
Feel free to message us with any questions regarding our services, or check out our affiliated friends in the GTA!
