[ HOLY PUPPIES BATMAN ]
Yesterday we welcomed 2 beautiful shih tzu puppies, Batman (black - 1.6 kg/3.5 pounds) & Robin (tan - 2 kg/4.5 pounds). Only 10 weeks old, from a litter of 9 that had intake completed by various other rescues.
Unfortunately, part of the litter is symptomatic for parvo, including Batman. Robin has not show any parvo signs but f***l testing came back today that he is indeed parvo positive.
Parvo is often deadly. The disease causes major gastro upset and takes an immense toll on a puppy and without aggressive medical treatment lives are typically lost.
They were originally welcomed October 31 by the rescue and Batman tested positive for parvo November 1 and got quite ill.
The rescue asked to transfer 2 of the puppies to Mattie's Place as they have 2 other puppies from the litter also parvo positive and it's a lot to manage for any rescue.
With thanks to TVEH who made space yesterday in isolation for the puppies if needed on intake. Cost would be between $6,000 - $10,000 per puppy to treat.
I spent 462.50 on food & supplies for them yesterday plus the cost of their medical intake appointment which is presumably in the $300 range. I'll post the receipt in the comment. We'll then need to go through the vaccine protocols and of course spay/neuters in 2025 at the cost of Mattie's Place on a strict, non-negotiable adoption contract. When they are in the clear and have their 2nd round of vaccines last week of November, I'll also need to get a good groom for both of them. So, a good chunk of funds have been and will be spent on these pups
Special thanks to Dr. C at Rouge River Animal Hospital who opened up an last minute appointment to see the puppies to make transport easier to rendezvous with me.
Yesterday they had full nose to tail exams. They are both doing really well. No fever. Eating. Engaging. Puppy energy. Hydrated. Solid stool.
Both have been put on Fenbendazole to get ahead of any intestinal infection and for excellent parasite control. The last thing these puppies need to deal with is giardia or all the major parasites often found in puppies.
Thank you to the fosters for the other rescue that poured their hearts and souls into these 2 puppies the past week. And thanks to my 2 fosters as well, that welcomed parvo + puppies. It's a big ask and so many of my fosters stepped up and I'm incredibly grateful and appreciative.
We will remain on strict isolation protocols for both these puppies for now and see how they do week over week.
I'm fairly confident these puppies are out of the woods and they should be back to normal puppy living with isolation lifted by November 23. If we don't hit any bumps in the road for them medically, they'll be ready for adoption in and around that time-frame.
Welcome kids to the Mattie's Place family. We're hoping the worst is behind you and it's smooth sailing from here. If not, we're ready to support you with whatever you need.
Please vaccinate and deworm your puppies starting at 6-8 weeks. It's the difference between life and potential death for a young life.
And please get puppies from reliable sources. So many backyard breeder puppies have parvo and various medical issues. Backyard breeders are spinning all sorts of stories to cover the fact they're backyard breeders. Often citing it was just a one off "oops" litter. It's trending and people are buying puppies off social media and sell sites because it's so easy to get a puppy this way and then finding their puppies are sick and vet bills are astronomical with no recourse. An easy puppy to buy is probably not a safe puppy to buy. Unless you're willing to take on an immediate $10,000+ medical debt.
