The comprehensive three-step process used by Jason KB Animal Photography ensures not only the creation of beautiful photographs, but also an enjoyable and memorable experience for every client. In-Home Consultation:
We meet with clients in the comfort of their own home to learn about their animal’s individual personality and to determine the best approach for working with them in the studio. We le

arn about our client’s vision for their future artworks and offer suggestions on what types of products will best compliment the décor of their home. Studio Portrait Session:
Clients and their animals join us in our specially designed, animal friendly studio for a 2-3 hour portrait session. Angus (the resident animal handler) coaxes animals to ‘smile’ for the photos while Jason works his magic behind the camera. Clients are able to provide immediate feedback on the images, which are displayed as they are captured on an adjacent monitor. Ordering Session:
Clients return to the studio for a large-screen projector ordering session. Jason and Angus assist clients in selecting their favourite images and help them choose the best way to display them. This process is made easy by superimposing artworks, to scale, into photographs of the client’s home, taken during the in-home consult. Clients know exactly what the artworks will look like in their own home before the order is finalized.

Sneak p*eks of 9-year-old Peaches the Morkie rescue in the fall leaves. She has made incredible progress once she found a loving forever home.

Mom Mia says "Peaches is a rescue, she came to us emancipated battered and bruised. She had been dumped at a pound where the owner said she had been terrorized by her husband and three boys and now that owner getting a divorce she had no money or inclination to take care of her. Peaches was blind and scared and would p*e the moment anyone walked into the room. She’s come a long way"

"With the aforementioned life she had, we didn’t know if she would ever be okay. We just vowed to make the rest of her days good. Every morning she wakes up at the bottom of the bed and you can hear her tail like an upbeat metronome. She slowly slinks to the top of the bed to say good morning. She rolls over onto her back for a belly rub and we offend marvel at how she’s able to trust again."

I'm honoured to create a lasting tribute to celebrate Peaches.

I love rescue animals. My cat Walter and dog Ella are both adopted. I was honoured when Lab Rescue Adoption Services reached out for a photo session. They are an amazing breed specific GTA based rescue that have rehomed countless dogs over their many years in operation. The founder Laura is dedicated, caring and will stop at nothing to ensure the best lives possible for all dogs that come through the rescue. She wears her passion on her sleeve.
Angus and I had a great afternoon capturing a gang of Labs as they romped through the field and had a mid-day pool party.
If you are looking for a rescue Lab or to donate to a worthy cause, be sure to check them out.

With the trend of having children later in life, our pets often hold the sacred spot of 'first born'. We bond and cherish - they are family.
Every so often during an in-home consultation, I arrive at a client's home and feel like their decore is the embodiment of my style - graphic, grey, clean, simple, timeless.
Biscuit and Boo's home was exactly this. With its soaring ceilings, open layout, monotone decore and clean lines, I totally understood why I was chosen to create their art.
Being part of the family, we hung their tryptic in the bright home office - the perfect spot for family photos. Additional photos from the session are featured in their custom coffee table book.

Meet Bondi, the charming golden. I want my portraits to reflect the idealized animal - exactly how their parents picture them in their mind. As good as a bride and groom look on their wedding day. It's still them, but all done up.
We created both a beautiful album and canvas gallery wrap as a surprise gift. When good-boy Bondi spotted his newly hung portrait in the living room, he sure thought it was very lifelike. He barked at it for two days before accepting the 'new' dog into his home. He may be more beauty than brains. LOL.
His wall canvas is simply framed to add contrast and help it pop off the wall.

Meet Louis. 🐕‍🦺🐾
While his wall piece isn't quite life-size, his energy and smile sure fill the room. Goofy, silly and happy, this gentle giant likes nothing more than to eat all the crumbs left behind by his toddler siblings.
Angus loves working with Great Danes - he doesn't have to bend down. That easily makes up for the puddles of drool they leave behind.
I'm thrilled to create this playful art to hang at Louis' parents' new home.

Meet Wooliam 🐑
As a baby, his 4-legged mom wasn't doing a great job with her new responsibility, so my client, his 2 legged mom, kindly stepped in to fill the role. Many bottles and diapers later, Wooliam was ready to visit our studio to capture some adorable baby portraits. He was a champ. Loving to run, play and give lots of head butts - his version of a high-five.
For the photoshoot, I wanted to try out some new concepts. I looove his portrait with the faux shearling background - soft on soft. His 'outdoors while indoor' photos give me a storybook feel. Which do you prefer?
I'm thrilled to celebrate our pets at all life stages, but there is something so cuddly, sweet and short-lived about the baby phase that makes them extra special.

Specific vision, tight deadlines, pulling off the near-impossible - three things I enjoy in any commercial job.
Echo dog broth approached us to create two images: a smiling, bright-eyed headshot that screams 'vitality' and a supporting image of a dog having just finished a drink, licking its nose, with liquid dripping off his chin like it 'just can't get enough.' Sounds doable :P
For a shoot like this, the dog breed is important as only some dogs consistently drip from their mouth - dogs that get their beard wet when they drink. My friends have a dog like this and you always leave their home with wet socks.
Then reality hit. The art director wanted a Corgie with its great smile and pointy ears. The only problem is they tend to be clean drinkers. As the client calls the shots, we now had to come up with a plan.
At the photo session we observed our pooch and, true to the breed, he wasn't a dripper.
Ok, how are we going to get those drips? Try stopping him mid-drink by calling his name - nope. Pour broth in his mouth (which he loved) and hope it drips out - nope, it just looks like drool.
Once accidental p*e later, we still hadn't got it perfect. Angus then came up with a plan to palm the broth onto the underside of his chin. Brilliant, we got the perfect drips.
Now, stitch together the drip, tongue lick, and perfect stance into one photo and we got our final mouth-watering, thirst-quenching image.
Stuart Little () had a blast, and after a few more p*e breaks, we sent him home with a box full of broth to enjoy.
If you want to give your dog a special treat or entice them to eat if they aren't feeling well, pick up some Echo Love Bone Broth from your favourite shop.

🎉 It felt magical when a few of my favourite things all collided into one assignment: the strict parameters of creating a packaging image, highlighting rescue animals, and raising money for a good cause. Well, the Royale Pet Rescue packaging photoshoot did just that. Between Toronto and Montreal, we photographed a handful of rescue cats and dogs to be featured on Royale's full range of tissue products.

Working with trained animals is easy-peasy for me. Working with well-adjusted pets has its enjoyable challenges. Working with rescue animals who, because of their history, might be extra shy, requires us to pull out all the stops.

The pets were all chosen because of their heartwarming adoption stories, not at all based on making our job easier. The descriptions went a little like...
"This dog doesn't like men".... Great.
"The other dog is scared of cameras"... Fantastic.
"This cat hides whenever guests come over"... Wonderful.

As a professional animal photographer, I will always advise the client if we are working with non-trained animals, we never can guarantee results, but I sure as hell will pull out all the stops. Thankfully, all the animals were very sweet and came out of their shells in no time... except that super shy cat.

We had advanced warning from the previous days' video shoot crew that the day didn't exactly go according to plan - the cat hardly ever came out from under the bed. And when it did, it made a B-line to behind the couch. LOL. For cats, I generally prefer to work in their owners' homes. So we set up a little studio at their place.

Minimized disruptions, low noise, lots of time to get comfortable. Still shy. Ok, move onto toys, strings, lasers, crumply balls. Nothing. The owner trying to play with the cat, cat treats, more cat treats, human treats. No, no, nope. Extra extra warm-up time, cream cheese, canned tuna, catnip. Zilch. Ok, it once or twice went for a toy, but wouldn't turn around to face the camera. Ugh. I did manage to get a couple of shots, but after 2 hours, figured we better change route. There was 'Sibling cat' waiting in the wings.

Creative Challenge Week 3 Complete! My goal was to create an image that told the story of a dog's instincts - hunting and following a scent trail. I wanted to add movement to an otherwise still image. I also wanted to create subject separation from the background using motion blurs. Overall I'm pleased with how it turned out, but not thrilled. I have exacting standards.
I really wanted longer motion trails, but struggled with my exposure duration because I did not have a neutral density filter to block some light. I also forgot my remote trigger in the city, so needed to release the shutter on the camera. This meant that I wasn't able to get Ella as high up the hill as I would have liked.
I aim was for a very 'hunty' pose, but my dog is more of a herder than a pointer. Thankfully some geese flew by at the right moment and caught her attention.
What do you think? I might develop this 'motion as a story' to other ideas in the future.

This is the largest album I have ever made 📚😍. At 12x16 inches and 3 inches thick, the album is truly a show stopper.
I have photographed Abbey, Bella and Brooklyn a handful of times over the years, watching them mature from puppy stage to adolescence, and adult to golden years 🐕.
We combined three photoshoot sessions, from three different seasons, over three years to create an album that is dearly cherished by their family 🌷🍂⛄️.
Unfortunately, Bella has recently peacefully passed at the age of 12. I know that our time together, the memories and art we created have become all the more special.

Creative Challenge Week 1 - E/motion. Capturing Ella's spirit and joy. Yahoo, week one under my belt. My goal to create some content to share using the process of a creative challenge was a success. I learned how to edit videos quickly, make a content calendar, and get comfortable making videos of myself (So awkward). I love sharing my brainstorming ideas, photoshoot and edits with you all.
And I think the final image is rad too. My mockup materialized and I learned a lot on the way. If you have any tips on how I can improve my content, please let me know in the comments or a DM. Creative challenge week 2 - here I come!

Lyra - Can I tell you, I love huskies. Beyond their sweet, lovable persona and unreal stamina, their wolf-life appearance reminds me of the astonishing evolution dogs and humans have had together.
Meet Lyra. At 12 years old, she has lost her eyesight but is still as jolly as ever. I strived to capture her magnetic energy, zest for life, ear to ear smile and charm that warms everyone's heart.
Being blind posed a slight challenge. When we would make a noise to get her attention, she wouldn't orient her face straight, rather, almost lean in with one ear. Just as humans do if someone is telling us a secret. Not a challenge I couldn't overcome - we adjusted the location of the sound to great success (a brilliant 9-year-old gave me that tip years ago when his dog was doing the same thing).
Dogs and humans that suffer from glaucoma tend to have cloudy eyes. In creating a portrait for Lyra's family to forever cherish, we adjust her eyes in post-production to how they looked for most of her life, a little smaller, bluer and full of soul.
Unfortunately, a few months after our photoshoot Lyra peacefully passed away. I received the kindest message from her mom about the fun day in the studio and how thrilled they are to have this art piece to always remember Lyra.

Surround yourself with things that bring you joy.
Meet Horatio. I created his wall piece to highlight his wise and majestic personality, expressive eyes, and love of his local park.
In Horatio's senior years he has difficulty controlling his hind legs. He and I were not going to let that get in the way of a great photoshoot.
At his consultation appointment, I learned about his many funny expressions, playful personality, and what would make an ideal art piece. Being in his golden years, we wanted to create an art piece to remember him by and would always spark joy.
His mom couldn't decide between my two styles, studio and on-location, so I suggested we do an outdoor shoot at a meaningful park. For a dog that has difficulty moving, I like to shoot outdoors where the possible settings are endless. Seeing as Horatio has difficulty walking, a well-choreographed shoot was key to get the variety I was after while not tiring him out. I wanted an easy circuit with minimal walking between shots.
My dog Ella loves to explore, so I took her along for the location scouting. At the local park, we found beautiful fall trees, open green fields, colourful leaf piles, backlight meadows, and graphic landscapes.
At the break of dawn, Horatio showed up for his big day. Noisemakers, toys and camera ready to go, we danced through the familiar park valley. Horatio was a champ, enjoying all the attention and fell in love with a turtle. A stuffed, plush, squeaky dog toy turtle that is. He liked it so much, we sent him home with it.
When you and your dog are ready to capture some memories together in a high-impact wall piece, be sure to reach out. We are currently booking for spring sessions.
