😧The longer you let your dog behave in those ways, the harder it will be to change those habits. ⁣⁣⁣ It isn't a conscious effort by your dog, of course. ⁣⁣⁣ It is simply the longer a habit is allowed to go on, the harder it is to get rid of - just like with people. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣

Training a dog is both rewarding and challenging. Many have asked, "How do you keep your dog focused during training?" 🤔 Here are some key insights from my journey as a professional dog trainer.

🌟 Build Trust: A strong bond with your dog is fundamental. Trust is the glue that keeps their focus on you. Building this bond takes time, patience, and consistency.

⏳ Short and Engaging: Keep training sessions short and playful when first learning. This will keep your young dog engaged. Quality over quantity is the key.

🎲 Variety Matters: Teaching new concepts and then applying those cues to different locations helps maintain sharp minds and high interest.

🎉 Positive Reinforcement: Reward your dog generously for behaviours you want to encourage. Celebrate small wins to boost their confidence and deepen your connection.

🔍 Break It Down: Complex tasks overwhelm. Break them into smaller steps and piece them together as they become fluent in each one.

I am really proud of this certificate. 🙌The "Connecting for Veteran Wellness" course covered important topics such as veterans, PTSD, moral injury, substance use issues, and the role of service dogs in supporting recovery.

I particularly appreciated the guidance from Indigenous Elders and the One Health approach to wellness. Although I don’t personally know any veterans, I am aware of individuals who struggle with substance use, PTSD, and other mental health challenges. This course deepened my understanding of how service dogs assist individuals with health concerns through exercise, trust, love, comfort, and the significance of connections and peer support.🐾💞

The Office of the Centennial Enhancement Chair in One Health & Wellness offered the course, led by Dr. Colleen Anne Dell at the University of Saskatchewan.

A calm-down cue is a powerful tool for teaching your service dog to relax. Consistently using this cue in training and daily life helps them associate it with calming activities. 🌙🧩💆‍♀️ The cue will allow them to take a break and catch a much-needed nap during their work day.

✋🗣️ The Calm-Down Cue:
Here's one simple and effective down method you can teach your dog:

1️⃣ Pair the relaxed down with a calming action, such as gentle strokes, a piece of kibble and a soothing tone.
2️⃣ Choose a specific cue, like "settle" or "down," and use it consistently.
3️⃣ Use the cue when you notice your dog about to relax into the down position.
4️⃣ When your dog responds by settling down, reward the behaviour with calm praise, a piece of kibble, and affection.
5️⃣ Practice the cue at home and gradually introduce it into different environments.

Teaching your dog to lie calmly in public places, such as shopping malls or restaurants, is essential for gaining access to a service dog. There are many ways to teach a dog to lie down. I can help you train your dog to be relaxed in these settings, allowing you to feel confident in your connection with your service dog. 🐾❤️

My client thought that training was about discipline. 🤔 She believed that she needed to be stern and "be the leader." While she wasn't completely wrong, her interpretation was a bit off.

Discipline involves being consistent and providing structure rather than simply reprimanding. Being a leader means being a provider rather than a boss. You want a cooperative partnership with your dog. 🐾👍 It's important not to come across as a harsh or strict authority figure.

🙌 I'm here to help you cultivate a relationship in which your dog wants to do what you ask. I want to create a scenario in which your dog willingly listens to you and prefers spending time with you over digging up the yard or tearing up the house.
