It’s spooky season πŸ‘»πŸŽƒ

Between the zombies and vampires, it’s easy to ignore the more mundane dangers brought by Halloween.

For the sake of your pets, keep them away from...

🍬 Candy - It might include dangerous ingredients, like chocolate or xylitol. It is especially dangerous if consumed in quantity.
πŸ‘• Costumes - Small bits, like buttons or decorations, can be chewed off and become choking hazards.
πŸ•―οΈ Candles - Jack o’ Lanterns and other open flames can burn your pet, or be knocked over and become a fire hazard.
β• Glow sticks - Glow jewelry can be chewed on and spill its toxic contents.
πŸ•ΈοΈ Decor - Temporary decorations, like fake spider webs, can be eaten and cause choking or intestinal blockages. Electrical cords should be kept out of reach or securely taped down.
🍟 Snack bags - Pets can get their head stuck inside, and suffocate. Cut up plastic bags before disposing of them.
πŸŽƒ Fall foods - Pumpkin, raisins, and corn should never be fed to pets.

By being mindful of these seasonal dangers, you can keep your pet happy and safe!

Thanksgiving is here! πŸ¦ƒπŸ‚
We're thankful for the awesome team we have, the amazing patients we see and of course our wonderful clients!
We just want to remind everyone that the food we enjoy at Thanksgiving can be harmful to our pets.
Foods like turkey, ham, and gravy can cause many gastrointestinal problems for our furry friends, including pancreatitis and gastroenteritis. Cooked Turkey bones can also cause severe gastrointestinal issues as well.
Stuffing, mashed potatoes, and other side dishes may contain onions, garlic, or chives which are all toxic to our pets!
If you'd like to include them in the festivities, foods like carrots, peas, small pieces of plain cooked sweet potato and even apple slices are wonderful little snacks that our pets can safely eat. Other than that, we recommend avoiding giving your pets any other table scraps!
We hope everyone has a wonderful weekend, and we are wishing everyone a very happy Thanksgiving from the entire Markham Road Animal Hospital team! πŸ§‘πŸ€ŽπŸ’›

Are you aware of these common foods that are toxic to dogs?

Grapes and Raisins are a big no-no for your furry friend. Even small amounts of grapes or raisins can be toxic and lead to kidney failure, so please make sure to keep them out of reach.

Chocolate, although delicious for us, contains methylxanthines, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, and even death in dogs. So please be mindful of where you keep your chocolate stash!

Macadamia nuts, which are commonly found in trail mix, cookies, and muffins, can cause weakness, incoordination, and overheating in dogs. If your pet has consumed any macadamia nuts, please call us immediately.

Rhubarb, although healthy for us, is an irritant and contains oxalic acid, which can lead to kidney failure in rare cases. If your dog has ingested rhubarb, please bring them in for evaluation as soon as possible.

Onion, garlic, and chives are poisonous to dogs and can cause anemia, vomiting, and diarrhea. If your pet has consumed any of these foods, please bring them in for evaluation and treatment.

Avocado plants contain Persin, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs, and if consumed in large quantities, can lead to choking or blockage. Please make sure to keep these out of reach as well.

Common poisoning symptoms include: vomiting, drooling, incoordination, swelling of the mouth, abnormal body temperature, twitches and tremors, breathing difficulty, seizures, and passing out.

If your pet has been poisoned, immediately remove your pet from the source of the poison and call us for advice - even if your pet seems fine.

Prices have skyrocketed for many breeds following the pandemic. As a result, pet theft is a growing concern.

Keep your furry friend safe by...
Adding your name, address and phone number to their collar tags. If they get lost, this makes it easier to return them to you.
Keeping their microchip up to date. If you change address or phone number, update it. When getting a pet, you need to update the microchip to show that you are the owner.
Spaying or neutering your pet. Stolen pets are often sold to breeders, especially if they're pedigree, and desexing them disincentivizes this. Adding this information on their tags may make thieves think twice before stealing.

Always remember:
Don't leave your pet alone. Don't leave them outside stores, or in the car - even if you're only gone a few minutes.
Supervise your pet. If your pet is in the garden or other exterior space, keep an eye out. Lock any gates, and add alarms so that you can tell if they've been opened. Security cameras also help dissuade thieves. Remember, keeping your pet in a front garden makes them particularly vulnerable to theft.
Ensure your pet is trained to return when called. For dogs going on walks, keep them on a lead - especially when visiting new places. Always call cats home at the end of the day to keep them inside overnight.

We hope you found these tips helpful! If you have any questions or need to make an appointment, please don't hesitate to book online or call us!

Cats and dogs communicate through their body language.

The signs they use to communicate are very different to those of people!

A cat's tail is often the most expressive part of their body.
A dog's tail can tell us a lot about how they're feeling. But just because their tail is wagging, doesn't mean they are happy!
By learning what the different tail positions and movements mean, you can better understand your cat or dog - and build a better relationship with them!

Just remember:
- These signs can be very subtle, and they don't mean the same thing every time
- Your dog's breed will influence their tail's natural position
- Your cat' behaviour depends on their environment
- Your dog's behaviour is influenced by their environment and personality, not just their mood
- Compare these signs to the way your cat or dog usually acts.
- These signs are guidelines, and aren't always 100% accurate.

Has your cat or dog recently started acting different? This can be a sign of illness. Book a check-up with us!
