Running Dogs - Training & Behaviour

Running Dogs - Training & Behaviour Running Dogs - Training & Behaviour is a Toronto-based dog training service focused on the use of fo Buks changed the course of my life!

It wasn't until I adopted a young fearful dog up in the Yukon that I remembered how important living with animals was to me when I was young. If it weren't for him I wouldn't have ended up guiding dog sledding tours; spending long cold days with hundreds of dogs watching them closely, taking good care of them. If it wasn't for that scrappy mutt I wouldn't have ended up adopting out hundreds of dog

s at a large shelter in Toronto. If it wasn't for Bu, I wouldn't have sought to study animal behaviour, I wouldn't have become a compassionate trainer, and I wouldn't be helping dogs and their people get along better every day. Forever grateful for that pup

Today is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. Today we recognize our genocide committed against the Indigenous people of this land we live on today, and the centuries of intergenerational harm, and the continued harm that has taken many shapes that has been inflicted upon the same people by white settlers. 🧡

Meet my new gf Lucy🥰

She's the biggest sweetest pup ever!! She loves to snuggle, she loves to leeeean, and she looooves to play🤸 but intros are a bit tough for her, especially (and paradoxically) with dogs - who she loves to bounce around with once she's gotten familiar.

Why is that!? Maybe she's a bit nervous? Maybe she's actually just SO stoked to meet that she makes a scene? Or maybe she's expressing some deep down genetically driven behaviour traits typical of a Livestock Guarding Dog!?

LGDs are often considered to be *primitive breeds* which means they've been around, doing what they do, since long before the majority of dog breeds you know even existed. That also means that their breed-typical behaviour traits are deeply rooted in their genetics 🧬

What does that mean for Lucy? It means that while she is absolutely adorable and sweet, she's genetically hardwired to be sensitive to novelty and changes in her environment, and responds in big, loud ways - great traits if your job is to spend your days chilling with sheep and scaring away coyotes and wolves🐺 Tough in a city environment though.

Fortunately, she's got a loving, patient, and dedicated family and has made some great improvements since landing there late last year ❤️

We're going to get there Lucy xo

Please consider chipping in🙏 click the link and donate any amount you can afford, every donation counts!!

This is Espie, she's a special needs dog who was literally stolen from an ER clinic while she was waiting to receive emergency medical attention. It sounds so horrible, enough that I even wondered how that could be true, unfortunately for Espie and her family it is true.

Her emergency care was delayed. She was brought to another vet, and then another vet before she received treatment. Thankfully she was treated and is reportedly in good health, of course this is info from the org that stole her.

Yes, she was stolen by people working for an organization. This was not an impulsive sn**ch and run, this was premeditated, planned... And disgraceful!

There are a lot of details that I can't cover here, but you can learn more from Espie's guardian - the person who took care of her for the past year, paid for her care, her wheelchair, her food, her dog walker... the person who signed the adoption contract! The person put in this horrible place having to pursue legal route to bring her beloved dog back home, not to mention the emotional torment!

Why would this ever happen?? The only thing ever did "wrong" was speak up about how had stopped picking up the phone when her then foster dog was due for more food. The same org with a long deplorable history of a wide range of harmful behaviour!

HELP BRING ESPIE HOME, AND STAND UP AGAINST THIS DISGRACEFUL EXCUSE FOR A DOG "WELFARE" ORG - CHIP IN A FEW DOLLAR🙏

For more info on history check out and the articles published earlier this year about some of their most egregious behaviour! Links are in my bio!

One of the greatest professional gains I feel I've made in the past year didn't come from a course, a lecture, or webinar... It came from fostering Cyrano from 💕

I adore dogs, obviously, but we all have our personal preferences and Cyrano is a dog who couldn't be more different from my preferences😂

Tenasi really embodies everything I want in a dog who I will share my life with, and he and Cyrano could not be more different 🤣

Now, don't get me wrong, I love this little nugget! It just took some effort to adjust, and it wasn't always easy. I think this is a valuable conversation for us dog guardians, we all have personalities, needs, strengths and weaknesses - dogs and humans alike. It's not uncommon to bring a dog into your life who ends up being something different from what you imagined, and that can be a bit tough to reconcile.

My philosophy to caring for Cyrano during our first month's, when we were still trying to sync up and find our rhythm was to _love him_✨ By that I mean that I found the energy and the patience to take the best care of him that I possibly could, even though his needs often required me to lean into my weaknesses. It was a choice, as simple as that❤️

It was never perfect, rarely easy, pretty exhausting often times, but I did my best and things got easier and easier, which made room for more silly, playful times, which led to a wonderful bond 💕

Signed, Shih Tzu Dad✌️

¡¡¡TEN IS ELEVEN!!!🎉🎈🥐

Okay, don't hate, but I'm 3 weeks late sharing this with you🫠 Enough of that though, this is about King TenTen👑

There have been a lot of dogs in my life, but Ten redefines that experience every day. We've been partners in crime for a decade now! I've never shared my life with a dog for so long.

All of the wonderful things we've done together, of which there are many, is one thing but these days as Ten ages (so gracefully!) I've been reflecting more on the chapters of our times together.

Ten was a voracious teen!! I'm filled w love and adoration thinking of it now, but he had me working hard trying to keep up and it was not that much fun often times!😩 He was reactive, he was a bully, he was confident and independent... I admired him, but I also struggled. My skills weren't up to the task and I defaulted to regrettable acts to (unsuccessfully) rein him in😞

I learned how to better meet his needs as he matured. During this time we also worked through KPA's Pro Trainer program which was challenging for us both but gave us an incredible tool box of skills to work with. He also forgave me🙏

This was the middle chapter, and it was a real sweet spot👌 maturity and skills opened doors for he and I. During this time we would visit elementary school kids, and Ten would certify as a therapy dog (though the pandemic halted that pursuit).

These days my insatiable pup moves through the world at a slower pace. He investigates smells like a connoisseur, sniffing the tips of twigs and the tynes of fences where wildlife passes underneath. He sits in parks now and observes more than ever. His athleticism still shows but it's no longer on constant display.

He has a power about him. It was always there, but he is more selective about showing it. He doesn't seem to need to show it like he used to. He feels wise in this way.

But wise Ten can still laugh and love and goof around... And relish in the finer things like croissants and pizza and surprise rendezvous with loved ones💕

Happy Gotcha Day Ten my love, happy 11th year moving through this world. You are a special spirit, an old soul, and I am so grateful to live my life next to you!
