Today we said goodbye to James, affectionately known as 'Old Man James'. A neurological event transformed him from the happy old dog I walked just two days ago, to an almost vegetative state.

He is not his death. He is an amazing little rescue from Georgia with scars all over his body. A resilient, confident dog, that had a ton of pack drive. All that mattered to him were his people, Taylor and I, and cool smells. He helped socialize so many fearful dogs. He would be the first dog they met, he was the master of no pressure hellos. Anytime our old fearful dogs visit they show James so much love.

He is my very first dog and Taylor's baby. We love him and he will be remembered as the amazing dog he was. To his many fans please enjoy the snippets of his life included in this post.

This sweet boy is Tucker. Tucker had no major issues. He was happy to see everyone, friendly with dogs. His owner wanted a better relationship with him and for him to listen so he could be off leash safely. His biggest issue was he would pull where he wanted to go on occasion or plop his butt down and not move to say hello to every person or dog he came across. Sounds harmless but can be very annoying to an owner trying to get places!

We did this process a little differently and started with tucker as a puppy and taught him basic obedience in sessions. When he got older we introduced the prong and e-collar and taught tucker and his owner in-door drills. She was very diligent and week after week did her homework until his off-leash drills indoors and leash walking skills outdoors were amazing. We then boarded tucker for a short time and completed his training outside and off-leash.

The benefit of doing it this way is the relationship it builds between the owner and their dog while training is powerful. Typically during a board and train we build that relationship with your dog and get the owner to practice the things we have taught their dog back at home, in an attempt to reset your current relationship and have your dog see you as a leader.

Tucker and his owner are out living their lives, going on hikes, and picnics off-leash, made possible with his amazing re-call. He gets the freedom to be a dog and his owner gets to relax knowing his training keeps him safe.

Hiccup. Hiccup is a handful, I say that lovingly. He could not sit still, on a walk he is at the end of his leash paying attention to everything but the person holding the leash. He is extremely high energy. He pulled everywhere, was unreliable off-leash. A very intelligent and driven dog with nothing to channel that drive and work that brain. A good memory we have of hiccup is while working on his stillness at a local park (we asked him to hold a down and let the world go by, a great exercise for an over aroused dog). We noticed after 30 minutes he was 3-5 feet from where we downed him with out us noticing. He could not stay still! So we really worked on that.

Hiccup learned every skill we taught him fast. Re-call, Re-call to front, Re-call to heel while in motion, down-stay, place command... He was amazing. The most difficult thing for Hiccup was to be still and we used the place command, down-stay and crate to help with his impulse control.

Hiccups owners worked hard and are still working with him. They used their free sessions, they messaged us when they needed support. They are doing well, rollerblading and teaching him new tricks. Hiccup will always be a high drive, high energy dog...but now they have the training and tools to keep him safe and themselves sane.
